Blizzard Countdown

The countdown is underway on the Blizzard Entertainment Website (thanks Hanzo) where they started the clock ticking yesterday for their promised big announcement (story). Meanwhile, the mailbag here at the Blue Tower has been filling up with entries from folks excited to see the same countdown on www.starcraft2.com (thanks StarmiT) which would seem to be an indicator of what today's announcement from the Tokyo Game Show will center around. Just to clarify, while the announcement may well indeed be about plans for a StarCraft sequel to satisfy those eager for such a project, the countdown actually appears on other domains Blizzard owns currently pointed at the same server, so you will also see this dramatic countdown (at 7-some odd hours as of this writing) on warcraft.com, as well, so there's no reason to be certain the announcement relates to StarCraft.

Actually, not only are Westwood the inventors of the RTS, but they are the inventors of many of the traditional RTS gameplay and interface patterns which still persist to this day. In a way, that's a more significant indicator of the influence of Dune 2.

Yep, I was going to say the same thing. I read it on Actiontrip

To #19 Cicatrix

"1) Blizzard invented RTS"

Hah! Hardly! The first widely recognized real time strategy game for the PC was Dune II by Westwood Studios, well before any RTS games by Blizzard. I spent *many* hours playing it on a 386DX40. Now Blizzard may have been the first to make a wildly popular one, but they did not invent RTS's.

At least if Bill roper wasn't lying when he said they hadn't and weren't working on Starcaft 2 a few months ago.

I think most real-time games let you pause the game to open up the game to more people and as a concession to the gaming format (computer cheating, your unit AI severely lacking, etc.)

Wondering what the fight is about again :D,

Better explain to me the logic of pausing real time. Real time means... currently happening... an equal ratio of game time to real life time. REAL TIME. Once you start "pausing", you are no longer playing a "real time strategy" game now are you?

I believe that credit goes to Westwood with Dune 2.

Guess we'll never find out because I would never buy it.

"...can't pause real time"

Heh. Better explain that to all the companies I listed above with outstanding RTSs.

TheCorrectOpinion? heh Hardly.. That's only your opinion. I have enjoyed all the Blizzard games, just like many other people here. But it's ok, everyone is entitled to thier own opinions.

I do like ingame pausing though for RTS games.. it makes it easier especially if you have a large number of units. Are you sure that Hegemonia will have ingame pausing? I havn't heard anything about that yet for that game.. but I'm really looking forward to it. ORB looks nice too but you gotta admit.. Hegemonia's graphics are better. Don't ya just love that Battleship?

1. Roper did already confirm that it will not be Starcraft 2. Starcraft 2 is coming, it is inevitable after the success of the first one, but this game is not it. I am not saying that it will not necessarily have a Starcraft flavor to it, but this is not the sequel. I do not have a URL handy, but a quick search should reveal Roper's comment (just look up "Roper no Starcraft 2" or something similar)

2. I noticed the timer yesterday and the image has changed from what they had. Looking at a few sites, they have confirmed that the image does change over time and that there is a message to boot.

3. As much as I can be, I am excited to hear about this game and which of the rumors are true (multi-platform FPS???). In all honesty, I grew tired tired of Blizzard's games some time back and I am very excited to see its talent go to work on a new (or close enough to) project.

4. Only a few more hours...w00t!

Wondering who called for an exterminator :D,
Ray

Diablo II was too goddamned addictive. I missed many- and in some cases major- opportunities in real life due to that accursed piece of thrice-damned software. No more diablo, please!

I know you are just trolling and my reply will probably invoke the release of some bodily fluid, but here goes.

1) Blizzard invented RTS.

2) You don't need to save in diablo. You just save when you are done! It autosaves like every 5 min anyway in case your power goes out. How is that annoying? I feel *better* that way because I can get into the game and not worry about saving.

3) RTS stands for Real Time Strategy. You can't pause real time. If you are a fan of turn based, cool. I like both.

4) Click-fest? Hardly. Sure you have to micro manage which causes you to click a lot. It's not like a fighting game where the mouse equivalent of "button-mashing" does you any good.

It sounds to me like you just suck royal at WC3 and have to cry about it anywhere you can.

I, for one, could not care less what the announcement is. The last Blizzard game I bought was Warcraft II and I didn't finish that because the last mission was damn near impossible.

As soon as Blizzard stops creating click-fests (all of their RTSs) and stops hindering ingame saving (Diablo series),,, I'll be back for more games.

It's a pity that the great RTS genre was abused by the likes of Blizzard, Westwood, and Ensemble. RTS should be about thinking and those 3 companies have made them glorified click-fests.

Thank god for the following with ingame pausing and save anywhere: ORB, Hegamonia, Warlord Battlecry, MechCommander2, the Total War series, etc., etc., etc.

They've just released WC3, it would be illogical to announce SC2 already. Yeah they're probably working on it but they won't announce it now, not until they have released at least an expansion for WC3.

I just hope they're going to do an original game for a change. Not just another sequel.

I agree. When was the last time that Blizzard released a bad game (that most people agreed was not good)? I don't think they ever did...
