Blizzard Countdown

The countdown is underway on the Blizzard Entertainment Website (thanks Hanzo) where they started the clock ticking yesterday for their promised big announcement (story). Meanwhile, the mailbag here at the Blue Tower has been filling up with entries from folks excited to see the same countdown on www.starcraft2.com (thanks StarmiT) which would seem to be an indicator of what today's announcement from the Tokyo Game Show will center around. Just to clarify, while the announcement may well indeed be about plans for a StarCraft sequel to satisfy those eager for such a project, the countdown actually appears on other domains Blizzard owns currently pointed at the same server, so you will also see this dramatic countdown (at 7-some odd hours as of this writing) on warcraft.com, as well, so there's no reason to be certain the announcement relates to StarCraft.

>>> Herzog Zwei was a great game, but I would only consider it an RTS by remote relation. RTS isn't just "real time strategy" but implies a whole set of gameplay concepts that Herzog Zwei didn't have.

Well, you had to defend your base while planning to attack the enemy. You had a number of different units to chose from, and a number of different orders for each unit. And (most importantly) you had to constantly keep track of the enemy and try and counteract what they were doing. To me, that's a RTS. Now, as with any genre, other games came along later and refined and improved on the concept, but to me Herzog Zwei was the beginning.

But to each his own...

Hello everyone.

Well, I'm almost certain they'll NOT release StarCraft 2, since
they've mailed out (in response to all fans) that they're not
currently working on StarCraft 2, but they remain quiet about
the name of their project, which is named "Project X". I guess
the project will be relieved (whatever it is) when the clock has
stopped ticking down.

-------------------------------------------------

These sentences has been secretly shown in the timer:

IM HERE
SOMEBODY CALL FOR AN EXTERMINATOR
CALL THE SHOT
IM ALL OVER IT
NEVER KNOW WHAT HIT EM
IM ABOUT TO OVERLOAD MY AGGRESSION INHIBITORS

And the one shown around 6 hours left:

BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE

Well well, wonder what that means? Let's find out.
Around 5 hours left, Blizzard gives us this one:

ROCK N ROLL RACING II

The question remains, are they f*cking around with us
just to get attention? No. One hour later (4 hours left), they
explain the previous message:

JUST KIDDING

They really know how to keep us fans awake

-------------------------------------------------

Also, if you look at the background on the timer,
it looks like a ghost unit from StarCraft. Though,
the picture gets clearer and clearer each hour. Look
at these two pictures and you'll get a clue about it:

Normal: http://www.blizzard.com/bg25499049-18.gif
Bright: http://www.warcraftsverige.com/bg25499049-18.gif

Now you can see more clearer what it looks like.

-------------------------------------------------

Finally, some stupid llama has released a web page,
who is claiming to have an e-mail from Blizzard, showing
how the new StarCraft 2 is gonna be like. Look here
and laugh for yourself:

http://www.acme.cg.yu/ACME/Vijesti/11.07.2001/starcraft2.htm

Later on, you can read some more:

http://www.gamers.com/news/1239700

-------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the time

The fans kill them?

This being Blizzard, an expansions is definitely in the works, but this seems a bit early for that and this would be major over-hyping.

Yes, even for Blizzard.

Only having a few measly minutes left,

Herzog Zwei was a great game, but I would only consider it an RTS by remote relation. RTS isn't just "real time strategy" but implies a whole set of gameplay concepts that Herzog Zwei didn't have.

Nonetheless, Dune 2 still introduced all the elements of gameplay and interface design that are still around now.

Final Guess Sep 19, 2002, 19:33
Sep 19, 2002, 19:33

OK, after wasting my entire afternoon in photoshop (nevermind a looming deadline, thanks again blizzard ;)) I have a real guess. It's definitely a female figure standing with her right arm hanging down next to her torso (left side of pic), bent at the elbow. The elbow is the lowest bright spot. The middle bright spot is her high mid-riff, just above the belly button. Her left arm is pretty much completely in shadow, as is most of the figure.

All the stuff that people think is a sniper rifle etc. i think is just background. It could be buildings, or vehicles or god knows what, but it simply serves to frame the negative space of the figure.

I do think she's holding a gun though, as it looks like some kind of scope/flashlight on the right side of the pic, sort of in line with her bent arm.

30 more minutes and we'll see how much crack i'm smokin... aaaauuuggghhh can't wait any longer!!!

Several Blizzard press releases have come out of this yearly convention and I can think of only one console-only game (BlackThorne) coming from Blizzard. Just because the press release is coming from a predominately console convention does not neccessarly mean it's going to be a console game. On a side note the first RTS predates Dune II, it's name? Herzog Zwei for the Sega Genesis.

Oh wow, I decided to go into the Star Craft section on Blizzard, and all of the sudden remembered what 56k was like (having cable now).

Star Craft 2 if only the world was perfect Star Craft: Renegade for the love of...learn from Westwood's mistakes Star Craft: Renegade X-Box great, take one of the best game genres (FPS) and make it into the worst format for it (console).
