Out of the Blue

I may be a relative newcomer to the joys of the automotive world, but I am still an old codger nonetheless, so my tastes in such things tend to run in an old codger direction, which is toward the Detroit muscle cars of my childhood. Therefore it was quite a treat when I got to spend a bit of time yesterday helping a couple of buddies shoot some photos and video of a 1972 455 H.O. Pontiac Trans Am, white with blue stripes, shaker scoop, the whole deal. The neat part is that I got to drive this beast for a short while, which gets me thinking that this would be a great adult theme park ride. I know I'd be willing to pay for a ticket to listen to that baby's engine roar, much less drive it again. On the other hand, fuel economy is what killed off big block beasts like this in the first place, so I'm not sure just how much a ticket for such a ride would be (not to mention the costs of insuring folks who are controlling a bazillion horsepower). But having played with computer simulations meant to portray this experience, I can say that there's nothing but the real thing to do this justice (I guess that could be said about most things though).

Hey Blue...
Wanted to let you know that there are a lot of driving schools that will allow you to drive some of the fastest production models that are out right now. They are a lot of fun and they also teach you safety techniques and they get you insurance discounts for having had the training. I know that there are some in Texas and I think even in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I do have to say that one of my favorite memories of my wedding was driving my uncles 1976 Jaguar E type coupe convertible. I can't wait for my dads restored 1967 GTX convertible that he is finishing the restoration of right now. I do believe that simulators are fun, but nothing beats the feel of a real roar under a hood. Do you knwo that the reason they are replacing the Trans Am's is because they are bringing back new GTO's!
Find one and have fun!

Pain, taxes, and death excluded.

Which explains why pain and death are such popular subjects for games. Apparently taxes are such a bad experience they don't make the cut. Which makes you wonder about a world where pain and death are considered "more fun" than paying taxes...

I have to laugh at that. I read about that SAME exact place for sale 2 or 3 years ago, and it looks like they may have done a little remodeling, but not that much! You know what they were asking for it back then? Like 7 Million. Now they want 25M for it?!? Get real. Maybe if they actually did the work to finish off the actual silo into usable space... That might make it worth it.

Yes... Big block power is what seperates the men from the boys.

1973 Olds 2 Door, 455 CI, Holly 750 CFM vacuum secondaries, and a single plane aluminum intake. Do 140+ MPH without breaking a sweat.

But at 12 MPG Highway... it sucked the gas like water.

Out of all the driving games out there none of them include, or are based off of our beloved muscle cars. (I tried Motor City Online, yucky graphics)Has anyone noticed a good driving game with the older cars like that? On any system, be it console or computer? I sure would like to test drive other beast from that era (at least virtually)

You could try Sega GT 2002 on the XBox. Lot's of older cars, like the Corvette Stingray (I don't know all the years of the cars, offhand, sorry), a '72 Camaro Z28, Dodge Charger, Ford GT390 (or something like that), Chevelle, and more. There's lots of older Japanese and European cars, too, alongside newer cars (pretty neat to see the '65 Ford GT Le Mans car racing against the '02 Ford GT Concept meant to be a modern reinvention of the GT)

Nothing against muscle cars, but obviously you've never driven a nice BMW. Acceleration is nice but handling and sensory feedback count for something too.

My friends poke fun at me because I drive a 450hp '94 pontiac firebird when, in thier opinion, I should be tooling around in some BMW junk. (bavaria, land of pretzels and automobiles.. go figure). They just don't understand how good it feels to trounce the accelerator and be sunk into your seat like you're sitting on sponge-foam. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks 0-60 should be measured in tenths of seconds.

My dad had a 1973 Chrystler Plymouth Roadrunner (383 engine) that he handed down to my brother and then to me. It wasn't in the best condition when it went to my brother so we all worked on it and such, but my brother kept getting hit by other drivers on the road (dunno what the deal was, it's like he was a magnet--hardly damaged the car tho). Anyway, by the time it got to me we had all grown tired of working on it since it seemed like for everything we fixed, two other things broke. But I drove it for a good two years or so and it was really a damn cool car.

The engine sound was just unbelievable and once the clutch was fixed it could accelerate like mad. Damn cool car, but we got rid of it because it was too much work for the time we could put into it and it eventually got too unsafe for everyday use. Ahh well.

edit: I forgot to say what kind of engine was in it!

I had a '66 Fairlane when I was younger and it had a 289 you couldnt even hear run but it was fast as hell. three speed on the column and no power steering and no sissy-boy hydraulic clutch, this pig had a mechanical one with a 20lb spring which gave me quite a workout. I loved it though.

That Trans-Am sounds nice Blue. My buddy had a '75 same series but by then catalytic converters were installed so it just didn't have the balls that '72 must've had. Plus the '70-'72 Trans-Ams/FireBirds were the last years before GM put that ugly "chinese eyes" grille type in.

My dad is the biggest car nut I know. He owns a '79 Mustang with a 289, all the fixin's. You think, 289? That's not much...well, this thing IDLES at 30mph! Don't even have to touch the pedal. Trust me, when you hit the pedal in this thing and shift into 2nd and 3rd, you're going thru the back of your seat! I won't drive it, too much power for one car, almost 600 horses! Plus it has nitrous. He just picked up a 89 IROC Z Camaro, stick, 305 HO, this thing moves also. I have his '92 Chevy S-10, lowered, bored out, chip changed, about 350 horses from this thing, nice ride, get lots of looks from the sound of the dual exhaust. He used to have two other Mustangs (another '79 and an '85), but he sold them. He has cancer and a very bad back, so he can't work as much as he used to. Really heartbreaking to see him sitting inside reading car books when you know he's dying to be out there working on his car instead. I help as much as I can, but I'm not mechanically inclined. Funny, he's a hardcore custom car nut, and I'm a hardcore gaming nut. Strange how that works out...

Myself I'm quite the fan of the older stuff. I enjoy the 69 mustangs and such, but my heart really goes out to the vintage cars, your 32 chevy's, ford thunderbirds, a buddy of mine owns a couple of mint condition ford model A's and T's(1908's). Not to mention a few Peaton's, I liked the old V16's the sound.

I suppose that those cars were the golden era, when cars were still new that not everyone had one.
