I never played Die By the Sword, so I wouldn't know about that. But Jedi Knight II had the best sword-fighting style action I've ever played with.

Only problem with using the mouse to control your sword is that you can't control your guy with the mouse too =(

To PsycSui:

Well, what about Die By The Sword? I thought controlling your sword slashes with the mouse, although clunky at first, turned out to be the greatest melee combat ever placed in a 3D game. As a matter of fact, you didn't even need a code to unlock the dismemberment in Die By The Sword, because that was the game's major selling point!

And as for NOLF2, I'm just happy they did away with the annoying "Botched Missions" that were present in the first one. I hated how in some areas, if I got caught, the game would end right there and I had to start the level over. Yeah, right, I had 6 guns all with full ammo, full health, full armor, and a boatload of FPS skill, and I lose because two guys with knifes saw me cross the hallway next door? Good god that was lame, it prevented me from ever beating the game.

about this renaming deal with the l3codeca.* files.. If you use any programs like System Mechanic or any other type of disk-cleanup program, it WILL delete *.bak files! Since you run XP anyway, rename it .backup or something, then you are sure they won't get deleted.

If you have a Creative SoundBlaster 128PCI or a card like that you should SERIOUSLY consider upgrading.. A friend of mine had problems with multiple games, and after upgrading almost everything, we finally figured out it was the damn sound card

Now we all have the Live 5.1, since it goes for a nice price and is good enough for games / EAX.

Maybe I'm a freak, but I didn't like the demo.

The graphics were great. Skins, models, everything looked and worked quite well. But I've played this kind of game many times... listening to the ninja girls talk was fun, but not THAT fun.

Great FPS stories are not made with cut-scenes, as Half-Life so cooly pointed out. The cut-scenes in RtCW? Bleh. Jedi Knight II? Bleh. Cut-scenes do more than add story... the create a lot of time that ISN'T spent playing.

Diablo II was the perfect example of good cut-scenes. After a BUTT-LOAD of playing, you get a really well-crafted cut-scene that gets you involved and gives you a much needed rest. But cut-scenes every 10-15 minutes suck. I hate it. Let me play.

The only reason Jedi Knight II was good was because it revolutionized the way fighting can be done in an FPS. No game has ever made sword-dueling that cool in a game before.

"Installed the demo when it came out. It worked perfectly. Last night, I downloaded a bumch of Windows XP Critical Updates and Service Pack 1,...."

And thats why most people dont instantly install all the crap microsoft pushes out the door...

I don't really expect XP to be that diffrent from the other versions of windows, once something has been screwed over by a patch/upgrade it stays screwed up, windows just wont give up the new files...

Am I the only one who gets around 1 minute loading times? Playing it on harder difficulty levels gets old fast, when half of my time is spent looking at the loading screen. Maybe I should upgrade my 256DDR to 512...

I really enjoyed it. But it is quite obvious that they borrowed heavily from Thief. This is okay, it was just that Thief brought a great deal of innovation to the genre and here I just see copying.

I played it several times though, and I will be buying it. I was just hoping for more from the AI instead of "I'm gonna kill you when I find you", "where are you", "oh well, guess it was nothing".

Installed the demo when it came out. It worked perfectly. Last night, I downloaded a bumch of Windows XP Critical Updates and Service Pack 1, and now today, I get no dialogue.

This is extremely frustrating. I have very little gaming time, and I get pissed off when I have to spend it troubleshooting.

Here are my syatem specs.

Dell 4400, P4 1.7 GHz
512 DDR 2100 RAM
Radeon 8500le 64MB
Creative SoundBlaster PCI

This is what I have done so far:
UNistalled Service Pack 1 - That didn't work
Unistalled/reinalled NOLF - That didn't work.
I go to CreativeLabs website, and it has no drivers available for my sound card. It says something to the effect of "not relased yet"
Tried running WMFADist.exe from the NOLF2 directory - that didn't work
Tried changing the in-game sound options ,changing the sound quality option from high to low, or vice-versa - that didn't work
did the "Disable Sound Filters" thing - that didn't work.

PLEASE HELP ME, I want to play this game.

The newest drivers should be 5.12.01.3300. Check windows update on WinXP, I believe they were released during the past couple of days on Windows update, if not today, because they weren't there when I installed SP1 over the weekend. The drivers on Creative's support site don't seem to be the newest, and the ones I have now run the speech/snds flawlessly. (I have a SBLive value BTW)

I got an error while manually installing "WMFAdist.exe" about the file "l3codeca.acm". I removed that file from my System32 folder then ran the install again and it worked fine. I think XP was blocking it from installing an older file because it was not Read Only and the new file is slightly smaller.

Try renaming it to "l3codeca.bak" so you can replace it if needed, but that was the problem for me under Windows XP Pro SP1, with SoundBlaster Live 5.1 with the newest drivers version 5.12.01.0244

Anyway hope this helps.

So, I installed the Official demo It is beautiful, but I had sound problems. I didn't hear the sound of the dialogs.

I tried everything you wrote about settings, but nothing helped. So, I checked my system , and I found something.

My system.ini file in the Windows folder has changed. I opened it with an editor (Wordpad or so), and now, I will write the difference.

Before installing the demo in the drivers32 section , there was:

msacm.l3acm=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\L3CODECA.ACM
msacm.l3codec=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\l3codecp.acm

After the installing the demo, in the drivers32 section I found this one:

msacm.l3acm=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\l3codecp.acm

And the other line has disappeared!!! So, I changed back to the two lines to the origin version. I restarted my Windows, and now, everything works well.

------ So, you can try this, if you want, but please make a copy of system.ini before do this.

NOLF2 Sound Problems? Go Here Sep 18, 2002, 14:33

If you experiencing Sound Problems on the NOLF2 Demo, here's what you can do:

If the in-game sounds and dialogue (voices) do not play, or there are problems with the quality of these sounds, then please try each of the following steps (in order) before playing again. Note that you should only try one solution at a time, since trying them all can greatly reduce the overall sound quality of the game unnecessarily.

1. Make sure that you have the latest drivers available for your sound hardware installed. These can usually be found on the manufacturer's website.

2. From your main installation folder (Default C:\nolfdemo), double click on the file named WMFADist.exe, and then follow on-screen instructions. This will manually install the audio codec that is required by the game.

3. From the in-game sound options menu, change the sound quality option from high to low, or vice-versa.

4. Refer to the sections below for specific troubleshooting information for your particular sound card.

5. From the Nolf2 launcher application, click on the "options" button and then click on the box next to "Disable Sound Filters".

6. From the Nolf2 launcher application, click on the "options" button and then click on the box next to "Disable Hardware Sound".

Please note that since No One Lives Forever uses an MP3 codec for sound, the Nimo codec pack may cause speech and sound to drop out completely. Please uninstall the Nimo codec pack before installing No One Lives Forever 2. If you have already installed the game, please uninstall both the Nimo codec pack and the game, and then reinstall the game only.

Also, subtitles will not appear in the game if you do not have a soundcard, or if your soundcard is not detected, or if you have disabled sound completely in the advanced options menu.

SOUND BLASTER LIVE! SERIES:

You may experience missing sound effects and speech with older drivers (v.4.xx). It's highly recommended that you update to the latest series of drivers (v.5.xx) to correct this issue. You can check your current driver version as follows:

1. Click on the "Run" option from the Windows start menu.

2. Type "Dxdiag" (Without the quotes) in the command line and press <Enter>

This will initiate the DirectX Diagnostic Tool Menu.

3. Select the "Sound" tab to see information on your sound hardware.

4. In the right-hand column of this window is your sound card driver information.

SOUND BLASTER PCI 128:

If you're experiencing speech and audio dropout, please try the following:

Initiate the NOLF2 Launcher, click on options, click on the "Disable Sound Filters" option. Also check on the Creative website and obtain the latest driver.

SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY:

Weapon fire and AI voices may stop playing during heavy firefights. An updated driver for the Audigy will fix this issue. Also, EAX sound filtering effects on some weapon sounds may not reset correctly after climbing out of water or other areas.

NVIDIA NFORCE AUDIO:

All aspects of game audio suffer from high-pitched static and popping noises. An updated driver (V1.13) should correct this problem and can be found on NVIDIA's website. (www.nvidia.com)

TURTLE BEACH SANTA CRUZ:

If sounds seem missing or the volume of certain sounds changes erratically throughout the game, please install the latest driver (currently v.4161) from the manufacturer's web site. This should correct the problem.
