UT2003 Demo Patch Planned

The Unreal Technology Website features an update from Epic's Tim Sweeney discussing some important issues regarding the just-released demo for Unreal Tournament 2003. Contained therein is the news that a small patch is expected today, which will provide the first real-world test of their in-game update feature while addressing a number of reported bugs. The post also describes how DirectX 8.1b is required for the demo, that the in-game server browser bug caused by the flood of users should be fixed now from the server side, tips for server admins running multiple servers on one machine, that the recent master server downtime was caused by its move to a faster machine, that the stats tracking system will come online today, an admission that joystick support still needs work, and more. Additionally, a couple of forum posts (thanks HomeLan Fed) highlight other fixes in the works, this one by Mark Rein admits that they accidentally broke support for Voodoo-based accelerators and that today's patch will address this, and this post by CliffyB acknowledges the dislike many have expressed with the sports announcer voices, describing new options the game will offer to control announcements, while providing a workaround to disable the announcer in the demo for now.

without opening myself to flames from the world, where does one enter a specific IP to connect to - i.e. for an unadvertised server...

I don't know about the announcer's voice being "gay", but it sure as hell is annoying. Unfortunately it's also needed to really play the game and keep up with what's going on.

But this particular voice is soo much like a game show host it makes me want to barf. They need multiple voices to choose from. I'd like a sultry female voice to be announcing, personally. Maybe some sort of "machine" voice would be cool too. But this guy is just stomach turning...

this may have been said already but you don`t have to to have dx8.1b to play the demo. I use dx8.1 and it runs awesomely.

I wouldn't say the game came out of nowhere, but you've got a point.

I own several consoles along with a PC. When I want to play PC style games, I turn on my computer and play. When I want to play Console style games, I turn on one of my consoles. Some console type games I do like on my PC however. The UT2K3 demo isn't one of them though. Like someone said here earlier, the UT demo MADE me want to buy the game. UT2K3 made me look under my desk to make sure I wasn't playing my PS2 or Xbox.

(veering off-topic)

Hi there. I'm late to the party.

I completely ignored Battlefield 1942 until a few weeks ago. Somehow since it didn't have the word "Quake" or "Unreal" in it, nor did it have one of those engines, it passed under my radar as "generic FPS" or "some WW2 game". Now instead of "screw Quake 3, we've got UT" I hear "screw UT2K3, we've got BF1942".

Part of me is thrilled by this - a game which seemingly came from out of nowhere and got where it got by word of mouth, not from clout or former glory. However, I realize it's more the doing of EA than the developer (I never even hear about the developer) so it's a little bit of corporate pushing.

So does this mean there's hope for the PC game industry?

one of the voices of distate for Epic. Still think they blow in terms of PR.

But the game is cool. I needed a new fragfest type of game. Q3 is still fun, but it's old. The weaps suck at first (in UT2k3) but once you figure out the combo system and whatnot they're cool. Rockets are too powerful. Once the kiddies figure out how they *should* play bombrun, it'll be fun. Right now everyone wants to Rambo it.

Stats should be a sweet addon. I wanna know how I'm doing overall.

I *think* Epic will get my 40 bucks.

BTW I play BF1942 too. This console war argument shit needs to stay on the consoles. On the PC we play all the games, all the time.

Personaly, I didn't like the DM at all, but hell I really enjoyed the CTF and Bombing Run, some very fine MP action there. After all, anyone can kill or die, but it takes skill to win a game where there is a goal besides dying.

I didn't enjoy this demo anywhere near the one for the original UT. After that one I was practically frantic to get my hands on the game. Epic seems to have adopted the more highly stylized look that Q3 had (one of the reasons I never liked Q3). It's hard to tell some of the weapons apart, the powerups don't look like real-world things, they're like floating logos or icons. One of the things I liked about UT vs. Q3 was how UT seemed more grounded in "real world" settings. They were places you could relate to (even if it was a huge station orbiting Mars). They were also quite diverse. In Q3 all the maps basically looked the same. With only 4 maps to see it's too soon to pass any kind of judgement. I know it takes me awhile to get to know some maps before I start enjoying them.

The CTF map looked breathtaking though.

While the maps are sweet, the action feels just too arcadish. If I was 14 again, I'd probably enjoy it, as an older dude now it doesn't really float my boat.
Ahh well, back to BF 1942.

Exactly JM... both have their place, and both are a blast to play.

Now to wait on that NOLF 2 demo, then I can officially declare myself dead to the world.

Well, I've got BF1942 and the UT2K3 demo on my machine right now and I'm loving both of them. Two different games both with their own appeal.

These BF1942>UT2003 posts are so juvenile (and irrelevant). Move along now & play your game.

I actually haven't been this enthusiastic about a multiplayer game in quite a while. I played a fairly crowded game of Bombing Run last night, and had a great deal of fun. The weapons are a little blah, but it runs great on my system . To each his own.

UT2K3 is such a sorry waste of time. GO grab BAttlefield 1942 and leave UT2K3 alone. This game is simply UT beefed up a bit and a copy of Quake 3 gameplay.

It's not original, it sucks and B1942 whoops it's ass.

I think this whole thing about the announcer is kind of silly. People have been waiting for this demo for months and now all they can say is "the announcer's voice is gay" or some other stupid comment. Those spoiled kiddies....

If you don't want to lose the announcer entirely, but find him a little annoying, you could try tweaking the AnnouncerVolume=4 found in user.ini
