UT2003 Demo Patch Planned

The Unreal Technology Website features an update from Epic's Tim Sweeney discussing some important issues regarding the just-released demo for Unreal Tournament 2003. Contained therein is the news that a small patch is expected today, which will provide the first real-world test of their in-game update feature while addressing a number of reported bugs. The post also describes how DirectX 8.1b is required for the demo, that the in-game server browser bug caused by the flood of users should be fixed now from the server side, tips for server admins running multiple servers on one machine, that the recent master server downtime was caused by its move to a faster machine, that the stats tracking system will come online today, an admission that joystick support still needs work, and more. Additionally, a couple of forum posts (thanks HomeLan Fed) highlight other fixes in the works, this one by Mark Rein admits that they accidentally broke support for Voodoo-based accelerators and that today's patch will address this, and this post by CliffyB acknowledges the dislike many have expressed with the sports announcer voices, describing new options the game will offer to control announcements, while providing a workaround to disable the announcer in the demo for now.

for those who didn't know or have forgotten, the "b" release was just a repackaging of dx8.1, so as long as you have that you should be fine.

Finally, not another paramilitary game Sep 16, 2002, 01:26

I personally have been waiting for ANYTHING that hasn't been another paramilitary game. Of course, now it's trendy, 5 years from now the 14 year olds will be saying "I am much more mature now, I don't play those military games anymore, me and my homies play Bridge Online now, beotch!"

I was underwhelmed by BF1942. Yes, the vehicles are kinda fun, but the actual soldier portion of the game is poorer than any other fps I have played to date.
I mean, a couple bullets from a gun kills you, but a rocket or 2 at their feet doesn't? Bleh.

I guess the point of the matter is, every game is going to have someone that likes/dislikes it. If you don't like UT2003, don't buy it. I think I will play something online now, possibly UT2003, but definitely not BF1942. To each his own.

Yes, DM will never die... I didn't say that it's dead, just that it's basicly dead. (As in not that high on playlist) You used to browse server lists and there whould be like 90% DM listings, now it's nowhere close. But people will keep playing it until the end of the world or gaming, that I am sure of.

It just seems like it's dieing compared to everything else (gameplay wise) that is out there. Personaly I love doing team games, even Team DM... yes incompadent teammates are annoying, but you do find good ones.

I don't think you can put AVP/AVP2 dm in here, because it's class based. I'm talking about good old fashion DM... think Quake1 or even doom. To me nothing has really ever captured the feel of DM'ing in those games, I mean everyone throws it in and it's always alittle different because of weapons/maps, but there's just something missing when you add all those things together. Maybe they need to take out those railgun type weapons... yea, let's go back to whoever controls the RL wins

Who think's they needed to put in a better bombing run map? Or even just a BIG map. All of these maps seem like 4-12 players... I thought you chould go up to 32/64 in UT2003.

Also I think CS needs to die... there's so much better out there. But i'm chalking that one up to people not upgrading/wanting to change. (Even if it's for the better)

i think what he meant about DM being dead is that DM is way low on the play lists. It'll never be truely dead, just probably not the focus of most people. Team based games are alot more flexible in what u can create with them, its hard to give DM a fresh new feel. DM is still fun, especially after playing a n00b filled team game for a while.

When they say that "DM is dead", what they really mean is that they don't play it anymore. It's about the same as saying a game is cr*p or "suxors" because you don't like it. Well then, don't play it. Other people do. I don't like CS, but God knows thousands do. Oh well. I go through cycles myself. I'll dm for a while then go to CTF / team based and then back again. I switch games, maybe to another shooter or an RPG. I can't play one game exclusively -- I burn out after awhile. Doing one thing to the exclusion of all else gets to be boring. Fast.

*edit* Speaking of other games, Mashiki Amiketo -- I loved the sp in AvP2 but found the netcode to be a pain. Have they managed any improvements there?

I play AvP2 DM, but that's about it. Occasionaly some Q3 or even Q2, but for DM I play AvP2.

I think other then 1v1 tournaments DM is basicly Dead

It blows my mind every time someone announces that DM is dead. Then who are all those people I've been Death Matching against every day? Some of us absolutely love good old fashioned DM. So you don't. Big deal. It's dead because you say it is? Personally, I'll take DM over CTF any day. Too often relying on incopetent team mates ruins the game for me. Of course, I would never try to convince others that the team based shooters are dead as that would be an asinine statement. People complain that DM is boring and that we need new innovations to keep it fresh. So by that logic we should change the rules to, I don't know, let's say football, so it doesn't get boring. Oh that's right, they tried that with the XFL and failed miserably. Sometimes, it's best to leave what works alone. We can polish a game to help enhance the experience (i.e. improved graphics), but as the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

"Personaly, I didn't like the DM at all, but hell I really enjoyed the CTF and Bombing Run, some very fine MP action there. After all, anyone can kill or die, but it takes skill to win a game where there is a goal besides dying"

Oh so true... so true. I got on one bombing run server that everyone seemed more interested in killing then scoring. So my team was down by 3 points and I just went for pure scoring (one of my teammates actully saw what I was doing and started covering me ) Anyways we won in no time flat, and the other team was just left wondering what hit them.

I think other then 1v1 tournaments DM is basicly Dead... long live other gameplay modes.

Makes me laugh too... the one guy saying he's not 14 anymore. Hmmm... 14 in 1999 when UT came out, then that would be what? 17 now... all grown up. Who knows, if he was referring back to Doom he may be an antique of 21 or 25 by now He finds a game like BF 1942 more to his taste / new found maturity. *shrug* I like BF 1942, as well as the UT2k3 demo, but it has nothing to do with "maturity". LOL I'm 43, 44 in a month, and I still enjoy a good fast FPS. I like slower team based games too. I even like other genres like RPGs. People who can only play one game, or discover a new "best" style of game and discard everything else are... funny.

Battlefield 1942 is just Codename Eagle with better graphics and the same braindead AI.

And I wish they'd stop grovelling at the feet of the Voodoo owners who want to play the latest games but don't want to pay $50 for a card that will run them.

I'm in love with the game, myself. It's refreshing to play something that brings back the frantic feeling of old FPS games!

If only there was some lava for me to die in, I'd be in heaven. I think the lava god is getting lonely

Now we just need Ass Goblin Forever to come out for some prettier Dukematching.

As for the lightning gun, I personally love it. I think it's really just a matter of adjustment, because I've been doing qutie well with it.

I dont understand all these people coming in here and saying "I dont like it, I've grown up".

Yeah, really mature saying "This game suxx! Dont get it it's crap!"... shit, people have different tastes.

Personally, I love the new UT, fast, frantic and beautiful, I just want more levels and models! Bring on the full version!

But I agree with the sniper rifle 'not shooting where I'm firing'... I feel that a lot too. I like the idea of the lightning gun... but it doesn't feel right, it still needs work.

Jezz all this bitching about the announcer. I find the announcer very usefull. It prompts me where I need to go after I respawn, with out having to glace up top of the screen letting me know if the other team has the flag. It's also useful camping up at the top of thier flag (above the hole) and I can keep my guard up with out having to look down the hole every few moments to see if the flag has returned.

I'll go for a change in the voice so he dosen't sound like a cheezy game show host, but I still find it useful.

As for the rest of you bitcihing about how it's too much like Q3A.. so what? Was not Team Arena an attempt to be more like UT? TU2003 is a much better engine than Q3A, I've never seen more realistic enviroments, other than in nVidia demos. It's nice seeing some real DX 8.1 support.

Anyhow.. I like it... if you don't then don't play it, play something else. Comparing this to Battlefield 1942 is apples an oranges. BT42 has some glaring graphical problems, but the game play it self is good.

Sure DM is old and moldy... but it's the foundation of muliplayer. If you don't hone DM skills you'll be shitty at multiplayer.

...that I have noticed/encountered:

1. I am unable to effectively bind the voice menu to my third mouse button (Logitech Mouseman Dual Optical - button works when bound to other commands). The game does let me bind it, showing it as such in the options, but only the "v" key bring up the menu. Interestingly enough, the "v" key is no longer shown as being bound to the voice menu in the options.

2. It would be nice to have the show scores button be used either as a toggle (what it is set as currently) or as a key that you must hold down to access (what most games utilize).

3. It would be nice to have some type of on-screen indicator of excessive lag. There are a number of times where it seems like somebody managed a cheap or unfair kill, but I was actually lagging quite a bit. It is a little, stupid feature of the Quack Quake and other games, but is helpful.

Thinking all that is left is to add a Cliffy B. "Bunny suit" model :o,
Ray

First of all, I'd like to say that the idea of being an announcer is great.... having about 4 different phrases is not so great. Hearing it repeat over and over in the midst of a fragfest is just sad.

It needs something like Sega's Sportstalk Football! Make up phrases based on what has/is happening.

Two different announcer voices talking back and forth could be cool if done right... maybe have each have a personal fav team they could root for.

A1: "Red Scores! Increasing their lead!"
A2: "Well it's no wonder, it's 5 on 2 here. Let's even the teams and see what Blue can really do!"

Or perhaps even give coaching advice... "There's no one defending the flag! *Somebody* get back there!"

With the lightning gun.... I *hate* it... it's suppose to be a sniper rifle with a trail so you can tell where someone is camping. I loved the sniper rifle from UT, but the lighting gun feels like it's not shooting where I'm aiming. Not that anyone is going to listen to me or anything but I'd rather the old rifle back with a matrix-like Bullet Time "Con Trail".

With the other weapons, it seems like there's a few missing.. like there's not enough variaty(?). The starting weapon is more of a temporary place holder until you pick up another weapon, in other words useless. (plus, how do you get more grenades for it?) The handgun from UT might not have been the best weapon, but it should still be feared. (Even more so when doubled up!) The new "Impact Hammer" is cool, a big improvement. It seems a shame that they took out the ripper now that you can use the shield to defend against random blades.

Um... that's about it for now... I'll know more when I get some actual online play...

I guess this is the part where I come in and give a big "I told you so" to everyone that said I was full of it about this game sucking compared to the first. Like I have said before I am always right and have tried to warn developers of their impending mistakes to no avail. This is juat a hack job for Epic and DE to make a quick buck from the Unreal Championship content while they work on their real games. They need funds to hold them over while they work on Dark Sector and Unreal Warfare.

The anouncer sounds stupid because he is pretending to be an anouncer by pushing hard on his diaphram to make it sound like his voice is deeper when it is not... hence the game show voice. They should just use the guy from the original or reuse the old sounds from UT1 if they can't get it right. The weapons suck because they have been dumbed down to being less fun or "funny" to please the CPL. I like the unintentional deaths the old weapons had and liked to laugh at the razor flying thrue the hall cutting heads off. and the sounds are not as powerful as the UT1 sounds and sound well... boring. Epic had the same problem with Unreal 1 and ended up changing all the weapon sounds later in a patch... remember that. Sound is very important just as much as the graphics. The graphics are much more cartoony and Quake 3ish probably because they could do curved suface stuff so level people always over-do it at first because it is a new toy for them. I hate jump pads and this new game will have that crap as well just like Quake 3. This game belongs on a console... oh wait, it is a console game, Unreal Championship.

The new technology (engine) is nice and clean now and runs pretty good compared to the original UT's Glide crap engine but that is all. What a waste of a good engine. The Karma physics is a nice twist but could have been better by making the bodies fly across rooms more or in the air instead of just dropping in the area around the kill and rolling down a cartoon hill. Perhaps I have also grown older and have new tasts as well. Take all these comments together and you can guess that I won't be buying the game. Even with all the tech problems bf1942 has, it is where it is at right now, I will not be playing all games or several games comming out. I don't have time so I choose a couple games that are the best and play those. I don't like consoles because the PC is the ultimate game system if you have the money. I better get back my submarine duty in BF1942 or B17 bomber or or or... it is limitless. Battlefield 1942 owns all!!

So in conclusion:
UT2003 = Cartoon Garbage.
Battlefield 1942 = Coolest game ever released.
