Battlefield 1942 in Stores

Several first-hand sightings have been reported of Digital Illusions' Battlefield 1942 on store shelves as well as word from people who now have their copies of the WW2 combat game. As usual, a call to your retailer is probably advisable before heading out.

No it's not my problem. I have done MANY tests on this game to verify my theories. I have beta tested games for years.

The netcode sucks. Period. Fast server or not, you still cannot walk (or stand) on moving ships....and hits don't register.

If I fire an anti-tank rocket at the feet of a soldier, they should die every time I am accurate. What I am seeing is the server doesn't even register many of those hits. I personally have had many of them fired at my feet and be englulfed in the explosion, yet take no damage at all. That is WRONG. You also said "Tank bullets kill infantry". What I am saying is, many times those hits don't register. Up close or far away no matter how accurate you are.

Infantry play is more than "not easy" it's broken and to say the problem lies in player skill is to hide the real issue. Do that and this game won't last 6 months before people move on.

I don't need you to tell me how long range weapons work. I fire real ones. The fact is, even at MEDIUM range the sniper hits don't register much of the time.

Grenades should be powerful, but not more powerful than a tank round or anti-tank rocket. BTW, anti-tank rockets have NEVER been designed ONLY for tank killing. They have always been multi-use. Go do some reading.

The network code isn't the best, but you have to take the time to find a fast server. there are a lot of shmoes out there right now running servers on DSL and Cable connections, and that just doesn't work for a game that requires this much bandwidth.

Anti-Tank rockets aren't known for their splash damage. They're meant th pierce and damage the hull of a tank, not destroy infantry. Tank bullets kill infantry, anti-tank bullets kill tanks.

Infantry play just isn't easy, that's your problem. The pistols are not very accurate, but the rifles are. You just have to burst them... and I'm not talking about the CS kind of burst where 3-5 shots is fine. I'm talking 1-2 shot bursts. tap-tap-tap-tap-tap, that's how you should shoot.

Also, at long range, if your cross-hair is off b an inch your bullet will be off by a mile. Keep in mind that this game does a good job of making non-long range weapons hard to use at long range. Even if your crosshair is right on his eye you still might miss because your bullet is traveling at an angle that may be more extreme than what you're seeing.

This is the first game that's made grenades powerful, and I like it.

The biggest problem with this game: spawn killing.

the game concept is awesome. the gameplay is not. obvious probs with bullet drop, packet loss and warping run rampant. this is associated with the use of the delta force engine. IF it can be patched this will be the best FPS made. if not, just another mediocre game.

First....I love the game. I love the concept, and it's a breath of fresh air. But let's be real here....it has some SERIOUS problems.

Bugs/issues I have experienced:

1. Players standing on moving ships can fall off, or THROUGH the ship...even if they are standing still.

2. Walking on a moving ship is a futile effort and often lands you in the water.

3. The handheld weapons have SERIOUS hitbugs even at close range. Sometimes they work great...sometimes hits dont register at all. Sniper rounds OFTEN miss even at medium range shooting at a still target. (with a 50 ping)

4. 75% of the time you can shoot a tank round or anti-tank missile at foot soldiers...and it will not kill them. Odds are you will die from a grenades they throw before you will kill them WITH A TANK/rocket! Tank splash damage should be increased. I think the grenades have more splash damage then tank rounds.

5. We SHOULD NOT be able to push an Aircraft Carrier clear across a map with a tiny little destroyer. Damage them...yes....push them a little...yes....push them at high speed?...no!

6. If some moron TKer decides to drive the carrier out of bounds...HE should die, not a whole ship full of trapped teamates.

7. Walking/running/jumping as a soldier is the worst part of the game. Thank god for the vehicles cause if they weren't there this game would be DOA. Why can't the quality of the infantry gameplay be as good as the rest of the game? I mean, take a lesson from Tribes. They have huge outdoor maps and vehicles, yet running around doesn't suck.

8. Connection problems? I can play any one of 4 games on my machine and NOT get dropped for connection problems. Why? Cause I don't have connection problems....your game does. I have talked to about 30 people on IRC about this and they all complain about it..... If there are connection problems, the game needs to me more tolerant of them and not drop people after 5 seconds.

I'm sure there are more issues. Maybe the rest of you can list your issues so they will get fixed. I will quickly tire of this game if they dont at least fix the critical issues.

I love this game. You can use absolutely everything. Wanna drive, DRIVE, wanna fly, TAKE OFF, wanna ship, BE THE CAPTAIN. Artillery, machine gun nests, Anti-Aircraft placements, tanks, trains and automobiles. Tank running bad....fix it. Call in Artillery, heal people or be a tank killler. This game is AWESOME!!!! I played it for 7 hours last night. I thought Medal of Honor was a blast, this game ROCKS!

Ok, I'm biased, I like world war II games. DoD, Medal of Honor and so on. But I also play CS, TFC, QIII, Tribes2 and so on, but this game is way cool.

My humble opinion.

ya you're right.

i use 1600x1200x32 + max settings

the game was slow (i have a 9700).

i tried lower rez'. and 800x600 was still slow. almost no difference. considering my video card i was floored, i couldnt believe it ran so slow.

then someone said turn down the sound. i went 44 to 22, and set quality to medium. BLOW my fps shot up.

tehn i went and set quality to low, but staying at 22, and it got even smoother. the game runs perfect.

i donno what it is but the sound hurts fps a lot in this thing.

another thing is that i cant hear a difference between high, medium, and low quality settings, so i left it at low. (not the Khz, you can hear 44 vs 22 vs 11 ez, i mean just the quality slider) i kept voices at the hardware accelleration default.

Haha. I meant he might not have problems associated with the game.

I know a guy who was having slowdown problems and it turned out to be an issue with his sound card. Try lowering the sound quality to 11 bit.

So if you're having framerate issues with a GF4, than you have problems that aren't associated with the game.
Methinks you need a course in logic. Just because the game doesn't display any bugs when run on your configuration doesn't mean that the game won't have bugs that only show up under a different configuration.

At 1024 x 768 with 32bit textures and everything else set to max, I have no frame rate problems. This is with an Athlon 1700+ and a Geforce 3. So if you're having framerate issues with a GF4, than you have problems that aren't associated with the game.

What OS are you running? I've found it runs best on Windows 2000.

Yep, the game drops you too quick. It also shouldnt show you "connection problems" message when you have graphical lag.

Graphics on full and the game runs smooth. At least 40fps+ average. (FULL AA and AF).


can you read the text in game? with AA on i can't read the text.

my ti 4600 isn't far from your 9700 and my cpu is twice as fast. i think you are lying about smooth, my game runs smooth to... in 10-20 second incraments.

Yes I am using cable and me and my room mate both get dropped sometimes it is 3min sometimes you get a to play for a while, and then blam disconnected and you have to fight to get back in only to get disconnected again.

Yah..GTA's replay, and then BF1942's "Fly by" features cause that. Hence, BF1942's not being as bad as gta3's, cause it's a little less than "Tivo for GTA3" etc. Happy Christmas!

This could very well be caused by the copy protection on the CD. Morrowind and GTA3 are both recent games that ran very poorly for large numbers of people, until the copy protection was removed. Recommend checking gamecopyworld for an exe fix in the next few days. It's a shame that publishers continue to saddle their developers' games with laughable copy protection schemes. All the hardcore gamers, and certainly everyone who pirates, know how to work around copy protection, so they end up hurting only honest people who purchased the title who lack the knowledge to circumvent it. Blah.

Not true. GTA3's slowdowns was the replay feature. I played that game with and without protection, and nothing. Someone had a fluke install that didn't have replays.. and it was smooth as silk always.
