Out of the Blue

Tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. So much has changed in the ensuing time it is quite staggering to consider... I'm not really sure how this would apply to those living outside the U.S., but it's really hard to imagine any amount of time doing anything to diminish the impact of 9/11 here. Anyway, nothing I'm going to say here can do the gravity of all this justice or put it into any sort of perspective, so having said this now, I'm pretty sure I'll just forego an Out of the Blue ramble for tomorrow. Here's to the sincere hope that the ever-rising global tensions that have surrounded this event start to ease soon so we can avoid further tragedies.

Alrighty, clarification time.

Some time after 9/11 many non-Americans were getting on message boards and spouting "you think this is some big deal? You think you Americans are immune to violence? You think the whole world should feel sorry for you when you don't give a damn about this when it happens everywhere else every single day 100x worse?"

Yes we think it's a big deal. If we ever thought America was immune to violence we don't anymore. However, I personally don't buy into the idea that America ever wanted sympathy from everyone else. We want everyone to be on our side (you know the anti-terrorism side) but we don't want sympathy.

All I meant was that one of the huge perks to America is that we haven't had to live in constant fear of violence (prior to 9/11 of course) and sure, 60 years of unattacked bliss caused some cockyness, but that doesn't make it wrong or bad. And the fact that atrocities happen all over the world doesn't make 9/11 any less tragic, the same way that the fact that we as Americans focus on 9/11 doesn't make those atocities less tragic.
