Out of the Blue

The holiday weekend rolls along... Labor Day is often considered the unofficial end of summer, and keeping with that the temperature drop around here has been downright precipitous, going from air conditioner to space heater weather in the span of a couple of days. Of course this is all still subject to immediate change... I'm not breaking out the long johns just yet. Anyway, we will brave the fall-like conditions for a bit of cook-out action today (today I am remembering to not offend barbeque purists by referring to the simple grilling of burgers and such as part of their art) as my folks are dropping by on the way back from visiting their new grand-daughter. Special of the day: Jalapeno cheese dogs — I'll let you know how they turn out.

no offense, zdim, but I'm not so big on jazz that I'd want to see two obit links on blues. <shrug> And stuff that was on /. is probably seen by a lot of visitors here anyways... The ECTS stuff is good though.

EDIT - here's something possibly of interest. This documentary aired nationally last night on canadian TV; the site is slow, but might prove interesting to some - My opinion of the documentary quality dropped a lot when good ol' Grossman made his appearance...

Mario is a blast; I don't think it has quite the level of pure "fun" as Mario 64, but it is addictive as hell and is full of challenging gameplay. If you have ever liked any Mario game, you will love this one.

As for Turok, I have only played a few levels, but I am incredibly unimpressed with what I've seen thus far. I ended up buying the Xbox version, thinking that would be the best, but the framerate still jumps around a bit, controlling the game is a real pain, the flying sections are really bad, the story gets even more screwed up in this version, and the main FPS levels are not particularly interesting, either. It's still better than part three, but that's about all I can say for now.

I don't know how valid this is, but the IGN (Gamecube) monkeys were saying the the Gamecube version was the one to get; they said the game was easier to control with the Gamecube's controller and that the framerate was higher/more consistent. I'm no fan of console controls, but Halo's controls are significantly better than Turok's, at least the Xbox version...

I did pick up one of the "S" type controllers on Saturday, but I have yet to try the game with it; I've been having too much fun with Mario.

Having picked up Mafia, too, but having yet to install it,
Ray

So Zdim, is this your way of telling Blue that you're available for Frans' old job?

Today's Solar Flare
Posted by CmdrTaco on Sunday September 01, @01:26PM
from the different-than-mind-flare dept.
"An anonymous reader writes "X1-class solar flare today (13:30 Universal
Time). Still the SOHO spacecraft offers some of the all-time greatest
snapshots anywhere on the web. The flare's residual activity would be shown
white and at around 9 o'clock position here. There are 3 major categories,
each 10 times stronger than the next: X-class flares are big; they are major
events that can trigger planet-wide radio blackouts and long-lasting
radiation storms. M-class flares are medium-sized; they generally cause
brief radio blackouts that affect Earth's polar regions. C-class flares are
small with few noticeable consequences here on Earth. If it were headed
towards Earth, arrival is usually 48-72 hrs later (this is not coming this
way). Future Mars astronauts should take a lead umbrella because one
radiation day on Mars is like living at 70,000 feet on Earth." Nature is
pretty."

small talk at cook-out Sep 1, 2002, 12:50

I'm glad to see the always politically correct Blue using Cook-out instead of BBQ to describe cooking burgers on the grill. But this brings me to something I've wondered about for years. When Blue gets together with relatives, I wonder how he handles the always-ackward question of, "so what do you do for a living?" question. It just always made me chuckle thinking about Blue (who I have met before, so I can place a face to my mental image), wearing an "I'm the Cook" apron, flipper in hand, grill smoking, inquisitive brother of his father in law (or some other semi-distant relative), chewing on a burger, saying, "so Stephen...what is it you do exactly?". Then they go home that night, and immidately fire up the old 386, connect to the internet and type in http://www.bluesnews.com. And then comes that sudden realization...."he writes THIS?!?! What kind of job is that?!?!?". Ha. Anyway, the mental image always makes *me* chuckle.

Carry on, Blue. I just cooked a few Labor Day burgers for lunch, and had one for ya.

Howzabout Nacho Chili Cheese dogs? Yeah, it's messy as hell but that's good eatin! I'm more into boiling pork and/or beef ribs and making my own sauce. I prefer to slow-cook them for about an hour or so on the BBQ. I usually take them off the heat and put them into the sauce to continue cooking several times. If you do it right, they come out moist, tender, and falling off the bone. Mmm, ribs... Just like the good Dr. ordered.

Ciao,
Dr. Rib bib

I thought SkyNet was the computer built by Cyberdyne Systems which becomes self-aware and wages a genocidal war against humans in the near future.

If so, then the quoted statement would be similar to saying "stock in the Pentium CPU" instead of "stock in Intel".

Yeah, but I guess that one of Skynet's first steps was to get itself listed at the stock markets to get some funding. Most evil things start that way :D.

the eternal question....wet or dry?

I've always preferred my ribs, steaks etc slathered in 'Q-sauce and blackened but this year I've been experimenting with dry seasoning and it's been awesome.

Today I'm gonna cook some cross-cut beef ribs (AKA Argentinian cut) and coat the hell out of it with a bunch of dry spices/herbs. The high fat content of beef ribs provides it with plenty of juiciness. I also picked up some "silver queen" corn on the cob which is like the Crown Royal of corn.

It also wouldn't be a labor day cookout without some fresh cherrystone clams, raw on the half-shell with some Franks red-hot Sauce™. (If the clams were harvested any longer than 48 hours ago they'll suck)
