Out of the Blue

Here's a blast from the past from the dusty halls of our news archive. It was on this day 1996, that's right, six years ago today, that the encrypted version of Quake showed up on retail stores (this was the shareware version that you could activate with an 800 number), including the shelves of 7-11 of all places. I'm guessing that this is the biggest game title to use such an unusual distribution scheme. I'm also guessing that the ever more hax0r-filled world is the reason such distribution schemes never became more common. Of course, that's all guesswork, one thing I do know is that this all sure seems like a surprisingly long time ago.

Link of the Day: Pirated Sites. Thanks The Flying Penguin. If only this was up to point out the 10,000 sites that hijacked our previous design =].
Story of the Day: Buffalo to throw a big wing bash. Thanks Mike Martinez. Actually based on Osmosis Jones!
Airlines won't ask those two questions. Thanks Jamie Fullerton.

...it was a pain in the butt dragging around the two boxes of disks with the unlocked version. Although I never had any problems, I always feared that I would lose both the copy on my hard drive and the one on the disks, requiring me to pay for/activate the game again.

Not that I wouldn't have paid for the game twice; I loved it! I think that Q2 benefited from its later release and Q3:A has had the best graphics so far, but Quake is/was still my favorite of the series. I know that things were much more limited then, but I enjoyed the world more and liked some of the more...quirky? things they did with it. Heck, even the expansion packs were a blast to play...

Really, really disliking the tired "Space marine" design of Q2,
Ray

You see, sometimes you write these things, and I feel about 200 years old. Most of the people playing these games are about 10 years younger than us, Blue -- you're responsible for keeping me feeling young. If you remember, I met you for the first time at M3, which, if I recall correctly, was only 3 months ago.

Yes, 3 months ago (wipes memory with a carefully placed spoon in the ear) -- that should do it. Ahhhhhhh.

Quake has always been my favourite of the series, I love the setting, the monsters, the mood (mainly thanks to the excellent soundtrack and sound effects, which haven't been matched by a Quake game since, nor by many games full stop) and Q1 deathmatch has always been the best IMHO.

As for the anniversary Blue pointed out, in one sense it seems like aeons ago when I look back (in 'gaming time' if you will) and I feel very nostalgic about it, but when I think about it in 'real time', in terms of my life, it's not actually very long ago at all is it? (does this make sense to anyone?)

Quaaaaake was pretty cool. I especialy liked the plot. My copy of the game must have come with the wrong manual, because there was absolutely nothing in the game that referenced the plot manual, and vice-versa.

It had it's flaws... weapons balance just wasn't, everybody uses the RL if they have it, the other weapons are a poor second choice. But Threewave CTF is still of my fave mods ever, and I still like to play it from time to time.

Encrypted Software Aug 30, 2002, 07:48

The other big reason Encrypted Software never took off is because traditional software retailers clued in to the fact that it would cut them out of the profits. The discs were sold for a small amount of money and then if you unlocked the software the software company profited, not the retailers. Consequently retailers didn't want to stock them. The fact that hackers figured out how to steal the software on the disc (surprise) didn't help either.

The thing that surprised me about the marketing of Quake was the fact that they didn't play up the Trent Reznor angle. I figured for sure you would find the game in record stores with a big "NIN" sticker on it, maybe even in the NIN section of the store. Nope, they didn't go that nutsy with the idea and I guess I have to commend id Software for not trying to cash in too heavily on that notion.

I remember using that encrypted version of Quake. It was the first of three Quake CDs that I had.

Unfortunately, I only have two now. I must have thrown the third one away because it was useless.

Plus, I don't know what I am doing with more than one Quake CD in the first place.

I also had the shareware CD and called id to activate the rest the very first day. I still have the unlocked file sitting on my hard drive (though I've gone through 4-5 hard drives since then). It brings back memories of my old Packard Bell (I know, I know . .) P166 with 16 MB Ram, onboard video and audio. Later I upgraded my video with a Hercules Stingray Voodoo Rush card (I know, I know ..)

I want to point out right now that mentioning the fact that the phrase "black hole hunt" would make an excellent title for a porn series would be in very bad taste - so please don't do it.

Thank you.

Quake 1 was biatchin' alright. Still, nothing beats(for me)
the original TeamFortress. That was back when clans were
fun, kewl, competitive and people didn't call good snipers
any variety of demeaning names.

I must admit I skipped a little bit of school to play some
matches. ^^;

Just a little in-joke from the old days when a rash of sites covering a range of genres adopted our old black framed site design from layout down to the fonts, colors, and anything else that wasn't nailed down...
