Out of the Blue

Here's a blast from the past from the dusty halls of our news archive. It was on this day 1996, that's right, six years ago today, that the encrypted version of Quake showed up on retail stores (this was the shareware version that you could activate with an 800 number), including the shelves of 7-11 of all places. I'm guessing that this is the biggest game title to use such an unusual distribution scheme. I'm also guessing that the ever more hax0r-filled world is the reason such distribution schemes never became more common. Of course, that's all guesswork, one thing I do know is that this all sure seems like a surprisingly long time ago.

Link of the Day: Pirated Sites. Thanks The Flying Penguin. If only this was up to point out the 10,000 sites that hijacked our previous design =].
Story of the Day: Buffalo to throw a big wing bash. Thanks Mike Martinez. Actually based on Osmosis Jones!

And to think, with all the people pirating Quake1, id still made enough money to buy fancy cars and make quake2...

wasn't descent labeled a "Doom killer"?

Descent may have been true 3d first, but it didn't use hardware acceleration. glquake and vquake did that.

You all need to realize that idsoftware is singularly responsible for the explosion of 3d graphics accelerators.

People played games like Descent back then too. They don't anymore, but they did then.

You all need to realize that idsoftware is singularly responsible for the explosion of 3d graphics accelerators. Before GLQUAKE no one had a need of one. That coupled with the superaddictive gameplay of deathmatch, capture the flag, headhunter etc. the replay value of the game increased exponentially. We owe all we have now to them. Take into account the games based on versions of the Quake engine: Quake and expansion packs and MODS, Quake2 packs and MODS, Kingpin, Sin, Halflife and mods (Counterstrike), Quake 3 Arena and MODS. Alice, FAKK2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor:Allied Assault. Then add the imitators Unreal and MODS, Unreal Tournament and Mods; Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight2, Redneck Rampage, Duke Nukem 3D, Serious Sam and MODS/Packs...etc. None of these would exist if the developers at id had not laid the groundwork and paved the way for all the rest. We all need to recognize id's contributions and remember them with the appropiate reverence. Bless you John Carmack and crew.

The scientists will also be looking at how gamma radiation affects the human body.

Just ask Dr. David Banner, he knows what it can do.

No one's heard "would that this/that" before? I understood it perfectly. Try this:
"If only this site was setup to point out the 10,000 sites that hijacked our previous design."

Doh! Obviously my reading and writing are on the same circuit, so the same blown fuse was the cause of all of this.

Hopefully this makes better sense now.

"Would that this were up to point out the 10,000 sites that hijacked our previous design"

I've read this sentence a dozen times and I still don't know what it's trying to say (well I get the gist of it, but the beginning makes my brain hurt).

Most of the 'copycat' sites that I tried checking out had been changed or pulled. Nothing like the threat of a good lawsuit I guess.

England University

Actually, the real problem is the "England" part was extraneous... it is part of their full title of the story, which begins:

BBC NEWS | UK | England | University Students...

Fixed now, thanks.

What the hell does that mean? =)

Just a little in-joke from the old days when a rash of sites covering a range of genres adopted our old black framed site design from layout down to the fonts, colors, and anything else that wasn't nailed down...

One of my clannies bought the Quake shareware CD just because he's a NIN fanatic and he wanted the soundtrack. But as long as he had it, he tried out the game... And another Quaker was born!
