EVE Preview

GameSpot Previews EVE: The Second Genesis with another look at Crowd Control Productions' upcoming outer space MMORPG based on attending the recent event in San Francisco to show the game off to the press. They discuss the impact of the NPC-less dynamic economy, creating a character from one of four races, the lack of experience points or character levels, getting started as a newbie, the importance of allies, the emphasis on space flight, combat, becoming rich, in-game messaging, and more. Included is a mind-numbing set of 94 screenshots.

since eve is basically a pvp game the roleplaying aspects are so much more apparent.

being from a particular race or faction will limit your options but only in so much as what your activities dictate. being from a specific race you can only do this or that, and there are probably other players from other races that will have missions or objective that require your destruction. but this all isnt to say that you cant make nice with a rival empire and gain enough favor to obtain their specific technologies and skills. in contrast bieng from a specific empire you can be a devoted memeber and get exceptional privledges that no one from another empire may be able to obtain.

the possiblities are quite extensive.

This game may not be getting as much press as the other MMORPG's coming out in the near future (AC 2, Shadowbane, and EQ 2) but IMHO it looks a lot better..

The game's dynamics itself seem to allow for players to roleplay a lot more which is really whatt I want in an MMORPG..

Here's to hoping its as good as it looks..

I eat pasta!

Cool: one of my issues with Everquest and DAoC is that the mechanics of the game get in the way of good roleplaying, whereas perhaps Eve can succeed in that area.

If the game mechanics are such that it actively discourages the immature kiddies, then I'm all for it.

there arent skill points. you build your personna on skills, but you dont allot points into any given skill. learning a skill is time based, real time, some take hours, some may take a week depending on the complexity of it. after 6 months of playing and investing x amount of hours you will loose 4-7% of your time spent learning skills. this is a large penalty and i dont know of any game that even comes close.

fortunately, eve seems to be drawing a more mature 'elite/privateer' crowd than your typical 'daoc/e&b' juvenile types. eve is a space trading/corporate domination game. not a hack and slash mob fest. a 12 year old mentality will not be stimulated by eve, nor will they be able to survive long.

yes eve is similar to others, it's played on a computer and on the internet, but that's about where the story ends.

you would be surprised about the amount of roleplaying that has already been going on for the last few years. the fanbase seems quite dedicated. one amazing aspect of eve is that the character progression is so wide open that an indiviual can do anythign they want. they are NOT locked into class/profession stereotypes. eve does not say what you can and cant do. your actions shape your destiny, not your point in str or wis. eve is roleplaying.

i suggest you stop by the forums and learn more. you may find yourself eagerly anticipating a wonderful new game.

Okay, so there's no experience points, but there's skill points; there's money (which might as well be experience points in the game); there's faction; loss of skill points on death. I'm not seeing a lot of uniqueness here.

The economy is totally player-driven, which means that if the game attracts the usual 12 year old idiots of many MMORPGs, the economy will be nearly totally idiot driven.

I know a lot of these types of games want to stress how dfferent they are from the others, while basically being pretty similar. This one seems no different.

However, like most MMORPGs, the RPG elements are just for show: no one ever RPs in these Gs: it's all about getting more skill points/money. There are all massively-multiplayer treadmill simulators.
