Halo 2 (Xbox) Announced

Hail to the Master Chief! 'Halo 2' is Coming to an Xbox Near You is the press release with the official announcement of plans for a sequel to Bungie's Xbox shooter. The announcement, which springs forth from "the X02 North America event," says the game should be on shelves for the 2003 holiday season. While progress on the PC and Mac ports of the original Xbox is now underway, the release mentions no plans for any ports of the sequel. Halo Truth and Reconciliation has posted the first screenshots from the game and an update from Bungie's Matt Soell on the announcement. Here's how the project is described in the press release:
"Halo 2," a sci-fi action/first-person shooter game, is a full sequel to the best-selling original and will continue the story of the Master Chief, a genetically enhanced supersoldier who is the only man that has successfully defied the Covenant, a coalition of alien races on a murderous march toward Earth. "Halo 2" surpasses its predecessor both in graphical beauty and combat intensity. The Master Chief and his marine allies return to battle the full complement of Covenant forces, as well as new enemies who have not yet revealed themselves. "Halo 2" also expands the Master Chief's already substantial arsenal with powerful new weapons, many pried from the twitching claws of defeated enemies, as well as more than twice as many drivable vehicles for exploring vast landscapes or speeding into battle. In addition to its epic single-player campaign, "Halo 2" will be playable online through Xbox Live.

gg, you just completely shot your whole argument down.

microsoft only has knowledge of their market by using money, and they basically 'stole' PC-DOS which is the backbone of almost every operating system they made.

you guys know of that opengl claim that microsoft did, right? they are basically trying to claim the whole opengl API just because they had intellectual property on one vertex shader function or whatever. dont tell me thats not stealing.

and besides, the way microsoft has been doing business in the console market so far is probably worse than sonys. at least sony didnt buy their way into the market, they had third party support from the beginning (PS1).

Heh, so Microsoft "bought PC-DOS, so they suck?"

Um, gee. Ask finance-type what they think of that move. Or any business owner.

To a "t," they'll all sigh and murmur, "brilliant.....I wish it had been me..."

Dump on Microsoft all you want, but before you do, you might want to look at history, and the place of the monopoly. Standard Oil, the Bells, etc. Yes, they were broken up, but, their influence on the rise to prominence of American business is irrefutable.

Microsoft is no different. More power to them for their place in history.

Isn't it weird how Bungie just stopped making the Myth series games? I really enjoyed them...and I also saw some game that used the Myth III engine but with army rangers or something...it looked like shit and just didn't fit...what was that game called?

I never played Marathon and only alittle of Halo, so I'm not sure what your talking about. I do know that them making the Myth series in between Marathon and Halo seems alittle out of place, going from one game genre to a completely different one.

Oh yeah! Halo 2! I forgot what we were talking about!! ; )

Some history:

Back in The Day, I played Marathon (all of 'em) on my Mac(s), and more recently, Myth on my PC and Halo on the Xbox. If Bungie starts making board games, I'll happily fish my card table out of the closet and dump some pretzels into a bowl. I'll continue to buy Bungie games because, IMHO, so far, they've been worth my time and money - I think they're fun. When they stop being fun, I'll stop buying them. Consider this notice, Bungie! : )

Back on topic:

Within seconds of playing Halo, I realized I was *really* playing Marathon IV ... and I was thrilled. Is Halo's story part of the Marathon storyline? I don't know. But I think it's easy to argue that Halo (kinda like Doom III to ID) is the game that Bungie really wanted to make way back when they made the original Marathon (Doom: ID). With this in mind, I bet Halo 2 will be (more like) the game that Bungie really wanted to make when they made Halo. I'm excited.

They're settled into new offices and a new platform and working on a sequel to a game that I'm guessing was about the biggest all-around pain in the collective ass to create they've ever experienced. God bless 'em! But now they don't have any excuses not to deliver on their promises.

I enjoyed (and am still enjoying) Halo enough that I'd be happy if they just continued with their existing tech and plopped me on the next Installation with a few more marines, a few new toys and ten more chapters all matching the quality of 'Halo', 'The Silent Cartographer' and '343 Guilty Spark'. More fun from the comfort of my couch!

My "Marathon, Myth, Halo" experience with Bungie leads me to believe that they're planning to give me (Well... for $50) everything on my list above wrapped in a shiny new engine. My "Halo Only" experience with Bungie *screams*, "Hey! When they first introduced me to Halo, they promised me a bunch more vehicles to drive or fly around a seamless, persistent world as I chose when and where I would take the fight to my enemy -- from the comfort of my PC and/or Macintosh!"

If Halo 2 is just a prettier whirl-wind, shooting gallery tour through 'Assault on the Control Room 2'... Halo 3 is gonna have to come with a VR rig, a stack of condoms and a free trip to Vegas for me ever to sing Bungie's praises again. Again, consider this notice, Bungie! : )

Anyone with me on this? Anyone read this far? ; )

Maybe i should re-phrase my statement...

Massively Multiplayer Online Games are not the future... saying that they are would be saying that, a couple years from now, most games released will be MMOG's... that's just a stupid statement. a couple years ago people said that online gaming was the future, they were right... today hardly any games (except maybe console games but that's a differant issue) are released without online multiplayer support, and if they aren't, it's most often because they are single player only. Playing with 16 other people is a hell of a lot more fun than playing with yourself, but playing with 1000 other people isn't always any more fun at all, it depends on the genre of game and how it is designed... RPG's could possible benefit greatly from a massively multiplayer environment... if Role Playing was ever an important factor in them, so far i've never played an MMORPG that wouldn't have been just as fun if it was just me and a couple friends trodding through dungeons. FPS's could be fun as MMOG's, but from my experience they just end up being slow paced and boring... take WW2OL for example... Giant environments, wide assortment of vehicles, hundreds of people, massive battles... it could be fun! Unfortunately FPS's require more than any other genre very low latencys, and that just can't be done with thousands of people from across the world connecting to a server. Also WW2OL fell into the syndrome of trying to keep people playing for a long time... and did it by making it incredibly difficult to co-ordinate with fellow troops, or get a combat in any timely fashion... i don't know about you, but sitting on the back of a truck for an hour and half, just to get killed by landmine placed in the road... isn't my idea of fun.

More doesn't equal better in the world of online gaming.

"I counted the number of games that scored 9 or higher for the gamecube and for the ps2 on ign.com..here are the numbers.

cube.ign.com - 8
ps2.ign.com - 33 "

Huh? When you count the games out for the PS2 vs the games out for the Gamecube, you should notice there's a minor difference in the numbers- all this means is that the PS2 has more games that are high rated, not that all its games are better. It's also been out for a lot longer than the Gamecube. Try averaging the number of 9+ ratings vs the number of total games, see what you come up with then.

This is all just bloody stupid listening to everyone argue about whether PC is better than XBOX. You are NOT real gamers if you think that good games can only exist one one system. Games are entertainment, they are designed for that. You are judging games & companies based on whether or not they a PC or XBOX and that is absolutely ridiculous.

A real gamer plays games regardless of what system they are on. I have an XBOX and a PC. I got an XBOX because I wanted to play some games, not because I wanted to take part in a bloody fanboy war about who is better. Get a life, all of you, and wake up and realise that real gamers play games for entertainment. If a system offers better entertainment in your mind, then go and play that system and those games instead of bagging out people aho are different. Have an open mind!!

Did it ever occur to anyone that you can have a PC and an XBOX at the same time? Im pretty sure it doesn't break any laws to own them both. You know, when your bored of playing HALO with 16 other players online or you just cant beat a challange on Project Gothem you can stop and go play DOOM III or UT 2K3 or whatever your fetish is. I personally enjoy the best of both worlds and I dont even have a large wallet. I think people in this forum arn't thinking outside the BOX, I dont even think they are thinking up one side of the BOX. I bet everyone here has got a console of somekind, even a puny NES or atari. Hardcore PC gamers can go play Doom III and hardcore XBOX and other console fans can go play something else. I personally will enjoy the best of both worlds. And since Im not in the US, I can enjoy it even better

Comparing the graphics is pointless. Especially comparing the graphics of DOOM III and Halo 2. That is like comparing the comic book drawings for Spawn to Garfield or something. They are different styles completely. But to add my two cents I don't think either one looks any better than anything else release lately.
That said, gameplay is the most important thing. What good do beautiful environments and graphics do for you if the AI sucks or the controls are all stupid? Think about that. Think of all the games in your collection and remember which beautiful ones you are still playing. Are you still playing them because the graphics rule or because they are FUN and entertaining. I think you will discover that I am right.
