A single-player demo of Battlefield 1942 recently became available on the cover-disk of PC Gamer magazine, and Electronic Arts has now granted us permission to post a local copy with mirrors. Nearly every thread that hits Blue's turns out this way because the majority of the people who hang out around here are a "certain type". I'll let you all speculate about what that type of person is.

what a great thread this has turned out to be ...a Bill Hicks ref....a "lil jimmy norton " opie & anthony signiture....IAM impressed !....just 2 days ago i was being called a "retard" (when did that become acceptable ?) and i retorted by calling said poster a "DICK, ASSHOLE,& JERKOFF !!! but later posts have re-affirmed my assumption that most gamers are intelligent, resonable ppl . this game "could" rock for me (so far - so bad) but I need freedom of key mapping !( and a little spray of "red vin vinny vino" would help...it DOES add to a games realism) ok ...who posts 1st with the movie quote reference

Yes it is a great time to be a gamer.

This thread is getting interesting, if anyone wants to add their opinions on the stage of computer gaming today, the history of RPG's, or where computer gaming in this type of genre is going.

BTW, the regulars over WebRPG Townhall Forum's Twilight 2000 forum think Soldiers of Anarchy is a lot like Twilight 2000, and that Twilight 2000 would be the ultimate MMOFPS

There's no doubt that the computer gaming industry is still in it's infancy. What excites me is that the games I was fantasising about five years ago are becoming a reality. Note: These games are NOT Doom 3 or UT 2003. While I look forward to those titles, they aren't the stuff dreams are made of.

Battlefield 1942 is one of my dreams come true. A living, breathing battlefield where its no longer you agaisnt the world, instead you are just one of many in a grand war. The combination of Infantry plus Air, Sea and Land units is something which, five years ago, was fantasy to me. In fact BF1942 was what I was HOPING Halo would be. Now my thoughts are "Halo? What's that?"

The future of gaming is not in taking an existing product and making it better. Sure, this pleases crowds (and me to an extent), but it's not going to get us anywhere. (Ok if you want to be pedantic, that's how BF1042 came about (A much improved version of Codename: Eagle)). But the future is about doing stuff which today we dream of. Stuff which makes us say "They'll never be able to do THAT in a game, surely!". because, trust me, one day they will.

BF1942 represents one of those dreams made reality. I'm sure you can all think if recent games which are fulfilling life-long fantasies. My other fantasies fulfilled include Deus Ex, Stronghold and Medieval: Total War.

Yes folks, it's a great time to be a gamer. And, if the publishers keep their wits about them, its only going to get better!

Sorta makes me want to set up my own development company...any good programmers out there?

Post-apocalypse and post-(nuclear)holocaust are interchangable.

Holocaust means huge scale destruction and loss of life - it doesn't just mean the WW2 Jewish holocaust.

Cheers,

My favorite themeland for this type of game would be post-holocaust. Whether or not u went post Holocaust like Mad Max of the post holocaust worlds of Twilight 2000 or some Cyberpunk genre, I think Post Holocaust or some type of scenario involving disorder and chaos, with a lack of some things, leads players to improvise the best they can.

I think fort building and such would rock too. When I played the old Table Top RPG Twilight 2000, I had a compound in old New York City, it was in a subterranian parking structure. I had a semi tractor-trailer for my door, with 4in steel plate on one side. Inside, in the multiple levels, I maintained several armored vehicles (most expensive tank I could afford, btw was NOT an M1A1, but it was a Cadillac-Cage main battle tank, with a 105mm cannon and was comperable to a T72. I had a few APC's, 3 or 4 trucks, gas and water trucks, some cars, some SUV type trucks. I had massive stockpiles of weaponry, but nothing really nice, like stingers or anything. Just boxes of frag grenades, russian heavy machineguns, a full auto grenade launcher, some other fine stuff. Had generators, a well onsite, and all types of fine things. Couldnt afford any airplanes, my charecter wasnt a pilot.

So that type of perpetual would rock. Ya a guy with a base like mine (assuming you had a skilled pilot player you could even have a chopper or an airplane nearby), you could have NPC mechanics, weaponsmiths, and engineers. You could even incorporate rudimentary AI NPCs for doing such things as ferrying wounded to your base, driving gas or water trucks, and maybe manning turreted weapons or on guard at home base.

your take on the perpetual world is similar to mine. i say have all the elements of real war: repairing, supply lines, resource gathering, salvaging, ect. but have these tasks handed off to the AI players, because most human players will not want to do them. most human players want to do fun stuff (i.e. fighting, scouting, tank driving). in that sense the AI players become a very valuable resource: your drafted civilian population if u will. of course, u can still allow for human players to handle the not-so-fun-tasks if they feel their ability to do them better can influence the outcome of the larger battle (or if they are forced to because of excessive AI casualties).

I never played WW2O, but it looks to me like they tried to incorporate all this stuff, but they forced their limited player base to do boring stuff like transportation, artillery, ect.... when they could have had them done by AI entities. what we got instead were a lot of disgruntled, under-appreciated WW2O players

Hey people... being one of the beta testers for the multiplayer game ( i know am a bastard). All i can really say is this game rocks, most of the bugs have gone completely.. the AI is much smarter and the game very smooth running now. Geforce MX users goto http://www.bf1942.nl for a temp fix on the demo. The mouse button forward backwards problem is gone.. The reason some of you have jerky mouse movement is because your using crappie logitech mouse drivers.. use windows default.

If you've played Codename Eagle multiplayer before you will LOVE this game with a passion.. why? you ask because i do and ive played codename eagle since it came out(junkie). This game will rock the multiplayer world. All i can say is ww2ol is good at what it does, it really is. But this is VERY VERY good at what it does.. hehe i love this game.

Oh and BTW if you want a Starwars version of this game try the codename eagle starwars MOD comes with tie fighters, AT-AT's, awings, y-wings, speederbikes and even force powers. FInd out more at the best place for everything CE/BF http://pub30.ezboard.com/bceandbfcommunity
