MW4: Mercenaries Interview

GameSpot's MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries Q&A is actually a pretty lengthy conversation with FASA Studios producer TJ Wagner and lead designer Dave Fifeld about their upcoming stomping 3D action sequel. They talk about the improvements made to the Vengeance engine to serve in Mercenaries, the increased variety in missions, the new multiplayer features, the singleplayer campaign and plot setting, the enhanced tutorials, the new mercenary sponsorship feature, the resource management aspect, and more. Nine new screenshots illustrate the proceedings.

have you tried the xpulse lasers? those on a medium or light mech can be deadly..

the new mechs in the is pack are pretty good.. the huchback is an awesome medium mech

but you are right.. unless you really have the balls to flank the enemy and get in their face its gonna be long range sniping

from what i've read mw4 mercs might change that with it's c-bill system used in online multiplayer as well..

I have been a mecha game fan for a while but I have to say that I lost interest in MW4 VERY fast. Multiplayer games were nothing but heavy vs heavy sniping at a distance. Black Knight didnt seem to change any of that....has there finally been some balance added between weight classes?

Graphics are nice and everything but I still play Starsiege even and that has really old graphics but the gameplay is WAY better than MW4 (as is the balance).

it's cool to see you guys talk about how much you're enjoying BK and the mech packs... unlike most older engine games out there

I play usually on the master server->in game browser (mainly cuz html serverbrowsers annoy me) and I've only ever played serious online thru BK... and it comes n goes.

They don't need to make mercs all buzzword compliant to get me to buy it either, or the new pak. But I'm sure it would help convince the masses to try it if the graphics were all insane and benchmarky and pretty, and some of those people might stay for the unusual gameplay.

And then I could shoot at them a lot.

also you read the interview it says they are just now turning on all the bells and wistles in the mw4 engine

this leads me to believe this will be the last installment of mechwarrior using this engine.. which is fine with me

heres to hoping mw5 will have all the latest advances.. real time lighting and shadows.. pixel shaders.. awesome particle effects.. and all that shiznit

i dont know where you guys play but i see the mw4 community alive and kicking.. the mech packs definately gave it a boost i see more ppl online since the inner sphere pack came out

black knight is where all the servers are.. on average tehre are at least 4 times as many servers running black knight than vengeance through the in game browser

on msn zone though vengeance is the dominating factor.. i do still have trouble getting into one or two of the rooms during busy hours

and as for graphics, my only real gripe with the mw4 graphics is the trees.. and as has been said pixel shaders would be nice

mw4 was the first game to come out supposedly with full support for dx8 features.. maybe they just need to flip a switch in there ..

lets hope.. not that it matters, i for one will buy mercs weather the graphics are better or not

It's never been an eye-candy franchise for me and most people playing it, I think. But you are right that having a kinda gen -1 engine is hurting it. We serious mech geekies may not be playing it for the graphics but I at least wouldnt MIND some, and we need people to shoot.

Watching the servers fade out is depressing...

A little pixel shading would be nice. Maybe high rez textures... something to make the game engine look up to date! By today's standard the game looks way to bland. I'm probably one of the biggest fan of the game but the community is shrinking real fast... you're lucky if there are 10 populated servers to play team attrition, Attrition pretty much died after BK came out. Great additions to the game play but you need some eye candy to get people excited about a game now days along with strong game play. People don't buy GF4s for nothing. Look at Doom3 no one has played it but everybody wants it.. people played mech4 but unless you make it a bit more appealing to the eye I doubt many will spend money to get this game. I wish people would buy it since it's been my favourite online game but sadly I think this game series I just about dead. Until Mech5 comes out! I'm probably gone trade in some old game at EB to get the next pack for 6$ but after that i guess it will be UT2003 time for me.
