America's Army Recon Demo

A bit earlier than anticipated, NVIDIA is the first site to offer downloads of the Recon demo of America's Army: Operations, the free first-person shooter game that was developed by the U.S. Army using the Unreal engine. The Recon demo requires a whopping 203.9 MB download, and offers "four single player basic training missions including a rifle range, obstacle course and weapons course," as well as "six multiplayer missions including a homeland defense operation, urban training, freeing prisoners, and protecting against an act of ecological terrorism." Word from HomeLan Fed is that the login authorization and multiplayer servers are not due to be launched until the original release time of 3:00 AM EDT (midnight PDT) though. Further mirrors can be expected on the official site by that time as well. Update: Mirrors are already online at FilePlanet (registration required) and 3D Gamers.

I don't honestly see how this will make people want to join the military. If games could make people want to join the military wouldn't people already have signed up after MOH and CounterStrike? Wouldn't movies like Black Hawk Down have thousands of people signing up for the Air Force? Seems like a big waste of money to me. There is plenty of war propaganda and movies/games based on war stories. Why spend our hard earned money to make another?
The gaming community insists over and over again that games do not influence real-life. We get outraged when it is insinuated that Doom/Quake/Duke Nukem caused Columbine disasters, yet when the military says a game will influence people to join the military, we are all for it. WTF?! It's just because it's free that makes it okay. People are such sheep.

oops should have been agreed with 162 and 164.
#165, don't turn this into a liberal vs. conservative discussion. The conservatives should be more outraged about this than the liberals. Think about it, they are using tax dollars to make a video game, using tax dollars to do the same job that is going on in private industry.
That's communism or socialism. People on the far left probably wouldn't have a problem with it, but everyone on the right _should_ have a problem with it otherwise they are hipocrits.

I agree with both of you (164,165). This is a really sad state of affairs, the worst part is most gamers don't care because it's "free". Most gamers are in high school or middle school and how many teenagers do you know that have a moral consciousness?

So what then about all the commercials for the army. This project will be a commercial made once and played millions of times in households around the world. Along with the loads of press it is already getting for "free". Indeed building interest in the military is of utmost importance right now. In these times of a recruit asking what are the benefits and health care I'll recieve for "serving my country". Instead of asking not what my country might do for me and actually asking what I might do for my country.
Gotta love those liberals.

...think of all the money that was used to create this game that could have been spent on better education or research to cure a disease. Make no mistake about it because they made this game with tax payer money (and it really doesn't matter if it was only a fraction of a cent per person) the money that has to go for things like education and research grants will still have to come from tax payer money on top of this or they'll trim the education budget once again to dumb America down some more. The American government thinks that it can charge it's citizens for recruiting propaganda. I am all for national defense, but I draw the line on wars for oil and other natural resources going under the guise of a war on terrorism. It's a waste of American lives.

163. Re: Competition? Jul 5, 2002, 12:08 anon@65.16
Good point. I don't think it will many as big of an impact as you suspect. In fact, I don't think it will make much of an impact at all, but I would certainly agree that it has the ability to make an impact. If they started making lots of games then this would be a serious issue, but this one game is all I think they plan on making and I don't think it will keep people from buying MOH and counterstrike. In fact, it might have the opposite affect and cause more people to be interested in that game genre.

Just something else to think about.

162. Competition? Jul 5, 2002, 11:50 anon@165.200
I hope this doesn't post multiple times. Bluesnews isn't showing the post I just made for some reason, anyways... This is the problem I have with the army making a video game.
This will be direct competition to other war type games out there like CounterStrike, MOH, ect. This isn't just a "Be all that you can be" commercial that advertises the armed forces. This is the government, using tax payer money, to make a game that will compete directly with other game developers out there. This is government owned industry.
We'd cry out loud if the government released an operating system competing with Microsoft, or a graphics program competing with Adobe, but if the government makes game software that competes with private game developers.. that is okay?!
People saying that this will offer competition making FPS and war games try harder are insane. The government can spend whatever amount of taxes they want to make a game. Game developers just won't try to compete if the competition is with the government who has unlimited funds. It's like the soviets owning all the steel factories. Do we want our government dabbling in game development squashing the competition?
I would have no problem if this was for army similations for those already in the military, but I honestly don't think this will make people, especially gamers, join the military. If so, people would have joined because of MOH and Saving Private Ryan. This is not only a waste of taxpayer money, but it directly will affect our economy.

I installed the game, and on my ti4600 it runs and looks amazing. The only wierd thing I ran into was when I had "client side effects" disabled and couldn`t here any person weapons sounds. lol Doh!
The attention to detail in animations ala seeing you actually load rounds into your weap is just over the top. Really adds to the immersion/suspension of disbelief. The Devs really did pay attention to what you see and hear ingame. How you move seems brilliantly done, as in how it looks from the 1st person. Panning your view in the prone feels just right. ;0)
Weapons sounds surpass easily Satchels Dynamic Sound Replacement pack for FP. Leaning in a military combat sim in the DF 2 vien has been a long time coming. There is alot to list here thats coolness. The engine being able to do such large outdoor areas is really surprising. Very cool.
There are some bugs obviously, but for me whats seen so far is worth the wading thru them. The few things that niggle me personnally is the double tapping of the forward key to go into a forward run. aarrgghh I like a seperate key for fast running. Other than some control config issues, I really love this game demo. For {ME} its that next step up from DF 2. And it couldn`t have come at a better time.

159. I hope this thread isn't dead yet... Jul 5, 2002, 10:47 anon@64.215
It is just as I suspected when I wrote my "WAKE UP" post. If all of you think that everything is not connected in one way or another you're a fool. This whole war in Afghanistan is about oil. Almost every war that has been led by the US has been to take a particular regions abundant natural resources. I thought it was odd seeing Vladimir Putin and Bush being so friendly and Russia pledging it's support to the US for the war on terrorism after everything started going to shit last year. Anyone that has been over to Europe can tell you that most poorer countries are run by the people with the most money, not necessarily the most qualified. It's no secret that Russia is run by a mafia type government. And there was the president of the good 'ole USofA shaking his hand and even having him talk to a room full of children. Today I read an article months later that the US is going to start buying Russian oil. HA! I am telling everyone right now that something is rotten in the US and if things go on like this in the next few years this great country of ours is going to crumble to dust and we won't need Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein to do it either, we'll have the George W's and Donald Rummy's to thank.

mmh.. after reading many posts and many line in gsa *bah* i really must said that the people should keep in mind that this game is FREE, nobody has to pay for it.. so then please be patient, the servers WILL be there, and there WILL be a dedicated server to download.. i really hate people who just start up the game, run into any kind of problem which can be mostly (!!) solved by just THINKING.. so people, be more patient and keep in mind, the game IS FREE... k?

You can pay for your precious server all you want, I'm just not inclined to give my money to gamespy, nor am I inclined to give my money for a service that is about as useless to me as a dead trout. I gladly laugh at those that pay for that service, just as much as I laugh at the testimonials for said service. Oh, and btw, they don't provide a service to me, so you 'SHUT UP', as you so eloquently put it. You can use exclamation marks, asterisks and your shift key all you want, but you won't make me pay for a service that I can get for free, have been able to get for free since I can remember, and will continue to be able to get for free until the internet has been completely commercialised and overrun by cooperations.

Oh, and China probably doesn't know anything about this game... They have a 'national firewall' stopping them from seeing much of the internet. Shows how good communism is, eh. UK as far as I know isn't communist, but we still offer free services such as NHS and benefits, so I doubt I'll move for a while yet.

154. RE # 145 Problems ;P -oops, my mist Jul 5, 2002, 05:32 Mawwman
Just a short post this time. Decided to give game another chance. Reinstalled it, lowered some computer settings and shut some running programs, and the game loaded beautifully to the New Game Screen so I think it will work.
The SOLUTION was one of those "Like, DUH" answers... I read part of the manual and it reminded me to update video drivers. Went to the nVidia link provided and installed 8 mb file of Version 29.42 drivers. I still haven't played the game past the menu screen, but I hope it will work now.
So the reason the game hung up on my computer was probably those drivers. Sorry for bitching about the game when it was really a problem on this computer.
So if anyone has a similar probelm with a GeForce 2 GTS 64, look in the folder with the Manual for the game and link to nVidia, and try the 29.42 drivers, at least they get you as far as the menu screen... now I am going to go see if the game works all the way.

Remember folks, a demo that PISSES OFF 90% of the people that are trying to play it is teaching them the wrong things about your game.

good! hopefully the difficulties now will discourage the lazy players that are just in it for the "free game"...I'm looking forward to some more realistic tactical gameplay once all this server stuff gets straitened out...

I havent been able to play all day. This stupid MOUT map is only on liek 10% of the servers and you have to play it first to play any other maps. Whoever the rocket scientists/brain surgeons are that thought this should be the way to play this game should be flogged with a cane in public.
