Ships Ahoy: WarCraft III

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Now Available is the press release announcing the availability of the eagerly anticipated new installment in the Warcraft series of RTS games. Here is a bit on what the release describes as what is new in this new installment:
A focus on concentrated battles between groups of mighty warriors brings an exciting new blend of action to the franchise. In the single-player game, players follow the adventures of Legendary Heroes, who grow more formidable with experience. As the game progresses, these Heroes are able to learn spells and special abilities and acquire powerful magic items. Heroes advance even faster in multiplayer games, adding to the intensity of strategic combat between rival powers. Expanded multiplayer options include the ability to share units and resources with allies and to compete anonymously against other players of similar skill levels.

Are you dudes seeing that price all over the U.S or concentrated in one area? Games here dont seem to be that expensive comparitively and the stores always seem to have a price war going on the hottest ones.

I totally agree with you. I live in Canada and so the game here is 90 bucks... There's no way I'm buying a game for that much unless I'm absolutely sure I'll love it. I wouldn't even spend that much on Doom 3 until I read a few reviews and saw a demo in action...

I felt the price was a little high, but for some reason, went for the Collector's Edition anyway. WELL. It-is-SLICK!

If you're a fan of Warcraft or any Blizzard games, you should at least check this out. Aside from the dvd (which I had to have to compliment my Diablo2 and Starcraft dvds), The Art of Warcraft is a nice, 175 page, full size book. Plus the soundtrack cd. Seeing as how, according to the included catalogue, the book itself will retail for $20, I can see how Blizzard came up with $75 for the whole set ($50 game + $20 book + dvd + audio cd + 4 lithographs = fanboy heaven). Packaging wise, this thing looks WAY nicer than the Diablo 2 edition they did a few years ago.

I do wonder why they didn't just jack it up another $10 and throw in the Strat guide, too...and it'd probably STILL sell millions.

Anyway, now that I've totally outed myself as a fanboy/geek...

You know $60 bucks isn't that much for a game when you think about how much games were sold for years ago... I recall PC games being 65+ all the time back the the days of DOS.

Sure, but back then PC games were a relatively new form of entertainment and not nearly as common as console games so the cost was initially higher. Much the same way as DVD players (or any new tech for that matter) were ridiculously overpriced compared to what you can get them for today. My guess is that publishers see how much people are willing to pay for console games (where $60 is fairly typical) and figure why not start charging the same for PC games? Too bad, really, since that effectively reduces the number of games I'm willing to buy and I will also be MUCH more picky about choosing a particular title. I won't spend sixty dollars on a game that I'm not 100% absolutely sure I'm going to love and play for a long time. For say around forty dollars, I'm much more likely to gamble on a game that I'm not certain about.

I do think games are too expensive, but this is also why I bought the Collector's Edition... if I'm going to have that kind of outlay on a game anyways, I might as well go whole-hog and get the full package. Did that with Diablo 2 and enjoyed it, if for nothing else than having a box the size of a thick encyclopedia.

I just wanted to ask. Do you need to buy another cd for lan games on Wc3? On wbc you only needed 1 cd to play with a bunch of people.

You know $60 bucks isn't that much for a game when you think about how much games were sold for years ago... I recall PC games being 65+ all the time back the the days of DOS. And including consoles, I recall paying 80 dollars for Final Fantasy 3 on my SNES. So... 55 bucks isn't too bad for NWN or WC3 at all.

I like Wbc2 and WC3. Wc has the same races ,but that's a good thing. I like the auto spell casting on WBC2 more, not sure if can do that. The bad thing about the 3d engine is that you can't have as many units and you need a good computer.

Why is it that every new game nowadays is priced at $50 or more? I was looking forward to WC3 until I found out most places are asking $60!!! Please! It wasn't all that long ago that a typical game (new releases included) ran between $30-$45. Now, EVERY new game it seems is way overpriced. Screw that. Sixty bucks for a game = no sale.

OMG Warlords Battle cry has nothing on this game. I just wish there was a Firstperson mode like halflife where u could run about as a orc or something in first person. that would be so cool.

> God I hate RTS games...Shogun: TW excluded.

This reminds me of a review (or first impressions) I read somewhere, when the reviewer talked about W3's focus on smaller group of units compared to other RTSs with bigger groups and tank rushes such as (in his opinion) those huge unit stacks in Shogun.

I was speechless. Yes, I did laugh later.

Has anyone played WC3 who has also played Warlords Battlecry? I'm a big Warlords:BC fan, and from what I can tell WC3 is a lot like Warlords:BC 1.

Can anyone comment on this?

yep the sp campaign is totally addictive but multiplayer kicks ass if you can play with people who you know prior to playing it since you can usually enjoy it a bit more especially if your new because u dont have some tard screaming at u to leave because your a noob at least that was my beta experiences albiet the illegal beta which probably amounts for large groups of fucktards.

I guess I just want to know if anyone thinks WC3 is likely to draw me in and hold my attention long enough for me to get to grips with it and start enjoying it? Or is it not different enough from other RTS's to appeal to me?

It's considerably different, but probably not in a way that would get somebody into it if they've never liked an RTS in their life. Specifically, the 90 unit limit and different food resources per unit--in combination with the hero aspect--put a real burden on being able to hold out on defense and then mount a good counterattack. The gold resources per level tend to be fairly low (10-20k generally) and because of the unit limit it makes it difficult to really hold two or more bases against a good opponent.

So basically you probably won't like it. Well, scratch that--you might like the single player campaign on normal or easy skill level. I've been enjoying the single player and have gotten a real kick out of the way the story is unfolding.

I'm not a big fan of RTS's, but every warcraft game has really drawn me in.

so right, ut2k3 is just ut/quake/jedi knight 2/sof2/any other fps under different graphics. run around the level collecting weapons, get ammo for the weapon and attack whoever is in the way, repeat, rinse, whatever. so BOORING

just adding some new weapons doesn't make it original.
it's still the same game practically
