Wolfenstein GotY Q&A

HomeLan Fed's Return to Castle Wolfenstein GotY Q&A talks with Nerve Software's Brandon James and Splash Damage's Paul "Locki" Wedgewood about the Game of the Year edition of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Topics of the conversation with Paul include the story of the formation of Splash Damage, how they got the job of creating new Wolfenstein content, a bit on their work for both the GotY edition and the upcoming Wolfenstein expansion, and more. The discussion with Brandon covers the reception Wolfenstein has met with, a bit on the game's multiplayer modes, the new GotY maps, and more.

I am getting a distinct sense of deja vu on this message boards. It's perfectly OK by me that RTCW is being repackage as a "blah blah edition", but what is not OK is that blah blah = game of the year, which RTCW most definely is not - its a slightly above average game.

At the end of the day, I don't think it was GotY material. You do? Fair enough, go buy the same game in a new box.

Yes, because those of us who already bought the game are going to buy *another* copy. Please! Re-issues, such as Wolf GOTY, are aimed at those who haven't already bought it and might be persuaded to pick it up now that it's called GOTY - not to those of us who have been perfectly happy with their purchase since the day it came out. If it was, the map pack wouldn't have been released online.

I was happy with Wolf SP - spent best part of a weekend going through it - and play at least 12hrs of Wolf MP a week, for the last 6 months. So I've had over 300hrs of enjoyable gaming from my AUS$100 purchase. When I eventually upgrade my PC, I'll probably play through SP again to see it on high detail.

And I was right then too.

Fuck it, that sounds troll like.

We're talking about this again? Well, as posted in the other thread, here are three of the game of the year awards RTCW won. I bet there are more, but I haven't searched that hard.

1&2) The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) awarded the game both Best Online Game of the Year and Best Computer Action/Adventure Game of the Year.

3)Apparently it also won PC Gamer's Multiplayer Game of the Year award.

So let's continue the discussion where we left off at least... I believe you were about to post how three game of the year awards don't count--and be sure to bring up half-life as a reference!

I think it's more to do with the fact that they are calling it GOTY, when it really wasn't. The single player was so dull (i didn't even bother with the cut scenes, zzZzzzzz). It seemed to rely to much on the multiplayer bit, which isn't really that great IMHO.

I always apreciate a free official map or two so they deserve at least a little pat on the back something to keep the multiplayer fresh. My personal GOTY, MOH:AA, hasn't offered up diddly squat which kind of suprises me considering the trend to throw a few freebies out later on. The cheap bastards even have a map competition for the expansion pack and guess what the Ten contest winners get?? Their name credited to said map. Not even a mention of a free copy of the game!!!! Now that I find disgusting.

I might be in the minority, but I thought RTCW had some pretty solid singleplayer content as well. Though it was easy as hell and felt nearly as short as Blue Shift, I thought the material was good. Not worth the $60 I shelled for it, and not GOTY in my opinion, but I think there's a lot more bashing of the game than it deserves. Complain about the price to the publishers and give the developers some credit. I thought the game was really well done.

Quit yer fucking belly aching. Christ, anyone would think they are forcing you to buy it.

It just so happens I think it deserves a GOTY award due to the multiplayer pissing over everything else thats out.

And yes all the maps in the GOTY version can be leeched for free if you have the original game.

If you moan about a company re-releasing a game that has extra maps and is patched up so you dont have to leech a big hefty patch installer, then you need to get a fucking life you dumbass tards. Just dont buy it, simple as that. Move on. Have a beer. Turn the tv on, just quit fucking moaning!!

Then again..I know it is according to the site that gives the award..but I thought it was kind of funny that 2000's two big rival games, Deus Ex and No One Lives Forever, both got GoTY treatment...I don't know..it just struck me as funny...

You can already download all of the extra content from the Game of the Year edition for free. Packaging it onto a CD allows people who haven't bought the game yet to get (1) the most up-to-date version of the game without downloading patches and (2) a bunch of stuff on one CD without going around the web to find it.

Yes. But it shouldn't be called GOTY edition. As far as I remember, it never won any GOTY award.

The real upside of this is that for people who didn't buy this yet, since there really isn't anything all that great in the GOTY edition, they can buy the regular version at a reduced price. That's what I plan on doing...

The most important content that will appear on the GotY edition that you can already get for free is the Game of the Year map pack -- 4 new multiplayer maps (6 on the CD if you didn't grab Ice and Tram already) from Nerve and Splash Damage. Some other stuff in there includes the Making Of RtCW movie "Behind Enemy Lines" (about a 13 minute movie with interviews with all the dev teams, etc.), game demos, all the desktop wallpapers that we released, and some more stuff.

So if someone didn't buy the game and they want all that stuff but don't want to go scouring the net for it, it's all right there. If you don't want to get the GotY edition, however, you can still get all that stuff for free.

You're right about that #6.

I was in no way implying that Wolfenstein is the only example of people getting ripped off.

Right now though it happens to be the one example that keeps getting brought to my attention every time I load Blues News. For such a crappy POS, this so called "GOTY edition" sure is getting a lot of unjustified coverage.

I realize that Blue's just reports the news, and they do a great job at that, but this Wolfenstein GOTY garbage is just out of control IMO.

All those points are accurate, I also believe they are ripping off suckers, but no more than DVD manufacturers do with the escalating quality scheme with movies.

Make movie, sell in this order:
1) The Movie
2) Widescreen edition
3) Special edition
4) Collectors edition
5) Platinum edition

The scheme being used on this game is similar in idea, and there is a still a sucker born every minute.

All you can do is bitch to the distributors, or politely inform the masses at Best Buy that they don't need it.

"According to Hellchick (some quasi-famous game company rep who corrects the out of control speculation and bitching that goes on here), all the contents available in the GotY edition and expansion pack will also be available for download free.

Just to add that before the flame war gets out of control."

That's great #4. You're probably right about that.

That still doesn't change the fact that this game was a huge ripoff from day 1.

Like a said before, first, the game costs way too much initially. Not to mention they also released a totally worthless, POS, so-called "collector's" edition which was a waste of money.

THEN, they release a GOTY edition even though they really didn't even win GOTY.

THEN they announdce an expansion, AFTER the GOTY edition is released. Give me a break. THEY ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF.

So they won GOTY for multiplayer? Big deal. Ghost Recon won GOTY, Operation Flashpoint won GOTY. These are GOTY material, and Wolfenstein PALES in comparison to both those games. Let's face it, this game pretty much SUCKS, it breaks NO new ground whatsoever. Combat Mission broke new ground, Flashpoint broke new ground, this game SUCKS!!! This game is NOT GOTY material, you know it and I know it. The Sims is GOTY material, Unreal Tournament is GOTY material, so is Half-Life. Wolf is a POS compared to ANY of the above games I listed. Morrowind is also GOTY material.

Wolfenstein GOTY? In your dreams people.
