On the UT2003 Demo Leak

A post called A leaked early test version of UT2003 on the Infogrames Forums (thanks Shacknews) by Epic's Mark Rein offers some thoughts on a leaked version of the upcoming UT2003 Demo that has been making its way around the Internet. The post explains the issues Infogrames has to deal with when it comes to news like this, and goes on to address some issues about the demo that he's been hearing, including whether the actual release of this demo should be considered "overdue," why they are not just releasing the current version since it's already been leaked, and why they have not been forthcoming with more information.

#151 I think in regards to the discussion you wish to open that in fact you have schizophrenia and are in fact both the old, lonely loser and the young, bitter nerd. Pearl Harbour? Please...

The only thing worse than a teenager attempting formality on a video game web site messageboard is a sixty year-old man who posts to video game web site messageboards, AND ENGAGES IN POINTLESS FLAME WARS. So which are you? The young loser, or the lonely, old loser?

You've already lost; I have declared VICTORY and am now resting on my laurels. LET IT GO. Like Pearl Harbor, I have brutalized and demolished your Navy stationed in Hawaii. Unlike Pearl Harbor, however, is the fact that this is not World War II, and you are not going to win eventually, especially with faggy one-liners. TRY HARDER NEXT TIME, OR DON'T TRY AT ALL.

I'm opening this up for discussion, anyone can vote:
o Old, Lonely Loser? or
o The Young, Bitter Nerd

I imagine that it would take quite a bit out of DE's sails not to release the demo this week.

I tried editing the ini for the resolution (may try again) and yes your correct you can assign keys under the ini for controls but not in game and for the people whom do not know much on the unreal engine or editing the ini will be lost is all im saying.

I agree its impressive but imagine a complete version *drool* and yes static meshes are the bomb!So break out the 3dsm or maya because a whole new way of mapping is born!

I notice the editor is much the same as MobileForces.

you can fully adjust the resolution and controls, just edit the sys and user ini's.

But yes, its quite unfinished, but still is very impressive, even more so when you consider how far along it is now.

As for the static mesh's, I love it, although it is going to make truly unique map design quite a bit harder for people now, having to learn another editing program.

The leaked demo has many issues anyway, you cannot adjust the resolution, you cannot customize controls, only 3 mp maps and the single player map wont let you out the cave. The music is limited and all the character slots are [?] Why anybody would get this choppy demo out to the public is a complete mystery to me for it is not even close to being a semi complete demo product.

As far as the editor is concerned it doesnt work unless you remove uweb from the editor packages in the ini or you will get a error when it tries to load it, then you can use the new editor to browse but doesnt matter for I am sure its not a complete editor also in that I am fairly sure Epic is adding on the editor as well.

There is only one vehicle present in the game and it doesnt work so its just a mesh when that unfinished ver was made, called a viperveh basically a seat with 4 wheels.

Anyhow the bots lack in AI completly. You will notice in the game that damn near everything is a static mesh (YAY) trees, supports and even little tv screens hanging everwhere.

I would imagine at the time they release the official demo it will be worlds apart from this leaked version. I have seen and played the leaked version and its not gonna keep your interest at all so let the guys at Epic get a good demo out and be done with the talk of this choppy version already.

Peace!

"Don't you hate it when you've had the enemy flag for five minutes, fighting for your life, hoping that your team might get your flag back and then you find two "team mates" sniping at the enemy as they regenerate?"

I've had a similar incident to relate this inference to, but it ended up being that my team was off fighting for the other "flag".

P.S. Actually, in the most fulfilling days of CTF, there was this mod called ThreeWave CTF for Quake. At first, it was server-side, being that the two bases were at each end of a single-player map, and the flags were keys. Later, they were replaced with actual flags, with new maps like the infamous "McKinley" (sp?).

Has anyone considered the possibility that this leak could motivate the programmers to do an even better job (especially on the leaked material and so any demo) on the content of the game? If you let a leak surface on the internet and you say how this is unfinished work and the full version will be much better, wouldnt't it make sense to put EVEN MORE effort into the full version so it makes people think the leak was actually rubbish compared to the full game even if they used to think is was a "masterpiece"?

Just a thought..
