On the UT2003 Demo Leak

A post called A leaked early test version of UT2003 on the Infogrames Forums (thanks Shacknews) by Epic's Mark Rein offers some thoughts on a leaked version of the upcoming UT2003 Demo that has been making its way around the Internet. The post explains the issues Infogrames has to deal with when it comes to news like this, and goes on to address some issues about the demo that he's been hearing, including whether the actual release of this demo should be considered "overdue," why they are not just releasing the current version since it's already been leaked, and why they have not been forthcoming with more information.

The thing about Anon users, though, is that they don't have any name to be attached to their actions. It's much easier to regulate a registered user, as you can recognize them and remember which ones are causing trouble.

It's strange, but when people have a name, they normally avoid ruining it.

Not to mention that even though there are some registered trolls, they only seem to be 1 in 20. As opposed to the 4 in 5 troll anon users.

Frans, I think this should be proof that it is a good time to talk with Blue about REQUIRED REGISTRATION for the forums.
That is under serious consideration for a while already, though so far mostly because of the excessive profanity and general negativity that seems to go around this board lately. However, that atmosphere is not brought about only by anonymous users, registered ones are guilty of contributing to it as well. For that reason, we haven't decided yet whether disabling anon posting will make a worthwhile difference.

As for this particular situation with the leaked demo, that happened for SoF2 as well, and locking that thread until the official demo came out addressed that sufficiently. So regrettably, this thread is dangerously close to the same fate.

Sure thing, but it is not a warez site; it doesn't "have" the file.
Sites that post details on warezed files are just as much part of the warez scene as the ones that have the downloads.

I think the people downloading unoffocial betas ARE AWARE that it's not a first impression they're getting; it's a PRE-impression.
Yes, people would be. But these are gamers we're talking about.

but please don't post any links or even hints (however convoluted) to the warez sites that have the file.

Sure thing, but it is not a warez site; it doesn't "have" the file.

Also, another site called ZeroPaid (not a link), is not even close to a warez site, but a news site for P2P programs which *CAN* in turn be used to download files.

P.S. You can buy drugs at the park from the guys whispering "psst" at you. Oops... we better keep that information under wraps too!

Just lock the thread already, unless you really find this entertaining
It's mildly diverting so far but locking this thread is indeed what will happen if you guys keep pushing this over the line. We won't prevent you from talking about this thing altogether, but please don't post any links or even hints (however convoluted) to the warez sites that have the file.

Anyone played the demo and thought it was unfinished and buggy as hell?

I got it earlier today, it's obviously unfinished, but still pretty decent. Most of the menus aren't complete, and you have to change options through editing the .ini. The AI is hardly there, there's only 2 working gameplay modes. But, if it's any indication of even the real demo, this game is gonna rock.

WOW this games physics are amazing!

Go to the newsgroups and download the build people are posting. There are a few interface issues but other then that, its butta smooth on my 1.4ghz Athlon with 4400 and 512megs of ram.

I can see Epic making TONS of bank off this engine since it can do outdoor stuff so well. The doom3 engine might be graphicly superior, but its still cramped indoor stuff.

WOW! Well done Sweeney!

DIRECT links to the leaked UT2003 demo are being removed from peoples posts by the moderators.

DO NOT post direct links, that's futile.

LOL....nice fanatasy world you live in. They are surely going to judge the final product on this leaked demo just as they do when a developer releases a multiplayer test CLEARLY marked as such yet they go on to trash the hell out of whatever game it is because a few bugs crashed their rig or their framerate is less-than optimal.

Ultimately, Epic has no one to blame but themselves though. Evidently they were lax enough with the security that its now in the public domain.

According to Mark this is a very unfinished old and beta version compared to the one that is too be released in about two weeks.

Anyone played the demo and thought it was unfinished and buggy as hell?
