Out of the Blue

Media maven loonyboi sends along news sure to warm the cockles of the hearts of Babylon 5 fans (or perhaps the sub-cockle area, as Denis Leary once put it), as The Digital Bits is reporting "Warner and company are working on the first season of the TV series for DVD release this fall." An official announcement of this project is said to be forthcoming.

What a world we live in: Benjamin Ward, New York Police Department's first black police commissioner, dead at 75 and Ex-Mafia Boss John Gotti Dies in Jail. Both on the same day... I guess I don't need to point out which story is the headline on every paper, and which one is almost impossible to find.

Link of the Day: Ralph Wiggum SoundBoard. Thanks Chris Johnson. As cool as the Samuel L. Jackson version, and more family friendly.
Story of the Day: Wonder Twins Movie Activates! Thanks LwoodPDowd. Including a straight-faced quote from SeanBaby, no less!
Wild Science: 2 Tinkerers Say They've Found a Cheap Way to Broadband. NY Times free registration required. Thanks JCF.

You've probably got a truly dynamic ip and whoever had that ip last was running Kazaa.

My point is, I don't -have- Kazaa. Yet another reason why I believe it's evil.

kaza and the ones like it are crummy, unless all you want is music.

If you want other files though, Direct Connect(neo modus
) is the way to go!

current wireless connections...
Are not really considered 'broadband

Actually, the term broadband doesn't refer to the connection speed. It is often associated with it but technically it means that the data is transmitted using multiple carrier frequencies. In fact, most modems are "broadband" but they use low frequencies, so they are pretty slow by today's standards.

Are not really considered 'broadband'. Someone I know had one for awhile, and while it was nice to be able to connect with his laptop almost anywhere in the region, it was fair to middling in speed. Like ISDN speeds. I think he pegged 120k once or twice.

Speaking of the network clogging mentioned in the article, I noticed the other night my firewall had logged 100+ hits from attempted connects on port 1412 (the port Kazaa uses), oh, at a rate of about one every 5 seconds or so, all from different IP sources. I'm pretty sure Kazaa just doesn't randomly query IP#'s looking for other PC's with Kazaa- because even with broadband, a few thousand servers constantly pinging IP#'s would tend to flood the net... Now either my assumption is wrong, or SBCGlobal DSL or my PC was under an attempted packet flood attack. Now I'm pretty sure I didn't piss off any hackers, so does anyone have any extra info about this?

Hopw the hell can the US have managed to get an unlicensed useable part of the radio spectrum? What happens when 2 tinkerers decide to jam the frequencies used by this technology. And anyway wireless broadband is a known and proven technology is it not. why waste your bucks on this.

All those "NY Times Free Registration Required" are a real pain in the ass. Better not post the link than posting one requiring registration, imo.
