Castle Wolfenstein GotY Edition

Activision sends along the first four, high-res screenshots of the Game of the Year edition for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the first-person shooter by Gray Matter and Nerve Software. The images show off four of the new multiplayer maps that will be included, two of which are reworkings of single-player maps in the full game. To our knowledge this edition had not yet been officially announced, so we asked Activision for more information, and while a press release is currently not available, they provided this succinct description, which also includes word on a downloadable map pack for owners of the original game:
The GotY edition will contain 7 new multiplayer maps not on the original retail CD -- Trenchtoast, Tram Siege, Ice, Chateau, Keep, The Damned, and Rocket. Chateau, Keep, The Damned, and Rocket are brand new maps not released yet, but those will be available in a GotY Map Pack we'll be releasing this week. The GotY edition will also contain a few extra goodies like concept art, wallpapers and more.

A "Game of the Year" award doesn't mean anything except that the people who reviewed the game liked it the most (read: personal opinion).

Sometimes it's the entire office that supports the award. However, majoral opinion means nothing in the realm of opinion or fact.

And I'll do so with my own experiences with the game. I was just recently playing it through again on the hard difficulty. I had just reached the X-Labs, where you start near the sub. Creeping up over the little hill, I could see a very faint outline of a guard. In order to not attract attention, I switched over to my Snooper rifle. With its night-vision, the guard showed up plain as day. With only the muted sound of a silencer, the guard crumpled quite realistically to the ground. Oh, the smile that crossed my face. There has never been a cooler sniper rifle.

Now onto the multiplayer part. I hadn't been playing for a few months with everything else taking up my time, but I finally got back to this beautiful piece. With this game, you only need to play a few hours to have moments that you'll remember for a long time.

It was the beach landing level, and I was a soldier. We had breached both entrances, and taken the front bunker. I had watched as several others had tried to get the objective from the basement without success. I knew they must have been holed up down there pretty tight. I spawned in with a Venom. Switching to pistol, I made my way down. Peaking around the corner, I saw a Nazi run to the right. At that I rushed in, drew my Venom, and was able to mow down at least 4 unsuspecting defenders. Down to about 5 health, I grabbed the objective, and under the cover of a Lt., made my way to the broadcasting station, and my team won. That's a pulse-pounding game experience, one among dozens that I've experienced in this game (like defusing dynamite 2 seconds before it goes off), and I'm sure there will be many more.

And yes, I bought the tin can collector's version. Partly because I'm a big fan (not fanboy), but also because I'm an admitted sucker for special edition cases. You should see my DVD collection. Littered with tin cans and over-sized boxes.

Er, yeah. I don't think it needs to be pointed out that the assertion that players disliked the new clunky Quake game because they approached it from the wrong emotional perspective doesn't need any refutation.

Though he does reach impressive new heights in trying to convince himself he didn't spend his allowance on the wrong toy. Or if he's older, he probably shouldn't be buying games at all if such frantic self-delusion results. (And you know he'll pick RtCW: Part 2 when he sees the shiny foil cover.)

I use the term fanboy because he is defending it with no real argument.

I've no problem with a person defending a game to their deathbed (figuratively speaking, natch) so long as they can argue their case. Hell, I'd let you believe Daikatana was the best game ever if you could convincingly argue your case. The guy I called a fanboy had no argument besides the fact that we were all too soul-less to see why the game was so great. Which isn't much of an argument.

Got me?

#64 I know...and the really sad part is that these people are classified as gamers. Not only have they forgotten what a game is, but they also form things called 'Fanboys' classifications to denote people who defend a game avidly...Sad as it is, these people are pathetic.

RTCW was game of the year IMHO, I can't think of any games better that year. For Graphics quality it's still better than MOHAA and SOFII, for Online I think it's better than MOHAA, ( I've not tried SOFII enough online to judge ).

So for the current crop of FPS games MOHAA wins for single player and RTCW wins for multiplayer. SOFII, disappointing( I completed last night, now finding it hard to think of any standout moments, I still still remember a few in RTCW, although mostly during online play ).

Can you say fanboy?

I mean, dude, this is just ridiculous.

The game just isn't that good, get over it. I played it, I enjoyed it in parts - the para rifle for example was amazing. On the whole though, it just wasn't as good as it should have been. Where are you getting all this shit about us not having enough soul to see it's great points? Care to enlighten us as to what they are if you're so bright?

And the rest of you - look, over here! An anon making decent points and not just trolling!

hey man, are you on crack?
Why don't you just cut the makeup and say it straight out:
'Hey I'm a spiritual wreck!', 'Hey I'm so clueless look at me!', 'Hey, I don't know (or feel) shit!'
You're not having fun because this game, and the qualities that shine thru it, elude you.

Whats the matter, too spiritual for you?

#56 you're right, only morons can say that RTCW doesn't deserve to be rereleased as a GOTY edition.

I think that edition should rather be named: "BGE" edition. BEST GAME EVER edition, that would be more appropriate and even more people would buy it, since it's such a great game, inspired and enhanced in every aspect upon the original CW (what only 2 levels inside the castle?), the soundtrack is wonderful composed (to bad there are no Oscars for games or MOHAA would get it), smooth challenging gameplay (straight-forward, uninspired, no interesting scripted sequences, nothing is happening for about 15 levels; again MOHAA beats RTCW in every way) and great enemy design (am I playing a WW2 game or some sort of zombie B-movie; I guess it's the B-movie).

RTCW is one of the game I begin to play through and every level further I proceed, more and more am I asking myself when this pain is finally over or that I should stop playing instantly. It's not that bad, but just above average. Well, I played enough average games and I really can't stand them anymore. Their are so boring, nothing new.

Concerning multiplayer, yes there is one fun level included: "the beach". That's about it, they even took the time to create new levels, only singleplayer levels were ripped off and it shows again that you can't do a good single and multiplayer game. The mp levels are much too big and not inspiring for teamplay.

Just some random rant
