Halo PC Q&A

There's a Halo PC Q&A on Shacknews catching up with Chris DiCesar, a Microsoft PR representative, to find out what the status of the planned PC version of Halo, Bungie's Xbox FPS, as there has not been much said about this version lately. While Chris repeatedly offers assurances that PC and Mac versions are still planned, he also admits that when this will happen is "still up in the air," and that in fact, production on versions for other platforms has not actually begun. During the conversation he mentions multiplayer support as something that would be a highlight of the theoretical PC version, casts no further light on how Halo for the PC relates to the recent revelation that a sequel is in the works, and is unwilling to commit to a 2003 release.

This guy was from Microsoft Games, and said that THEY had a lot on their plate - but they're not Bungie. What I'm wondering is what are Bungie's Halo team working on right now?

I played Halo at E3, it seemed fun, but very hard to use a joypad for that kind of thing. But it'll be an XBox exclusive for as long as it has a chance of selling more X-Boxes. Not sure if X-Box's dreadful sales in EU and Japan will prolong or curtail that timescale.

I still think a Halo game that's technologically up-to-date will be great on PC even if it's 2 years away, as the premise is so strong. But there's the very similar Breed on the way before then, and the longer they leave it, the more they'll have to change to make it state-of-the-art on release.

I had no idea that pc gamers were such a group of f****ing whiners?!!?

It's just a game. Turn your pc off (if you can), pull your little atrophied fingers off your keyboard and take your pale, pasty white, fat ass outside and breath the fresh air, for Christ's sake.

Or, since most of you complainers seem to have to life, buy a friggin' Xbox, play the f***ing game, finish it, and take The Box back for a refund.

Oh, what's that you say?!!? You're not going to waste your time with that stupid game Halo??? Then what the hell are you guys whining about?!!?

...sheesh...and I thought the console crowd was supposed to be the kiddie crowd. Apparently not...

"Id software a gaming engine studio????!!!!!"

That sounds about right. id Software doesn't make good games anymore. They're popular, but it doesn't take much for a first-person shooter to be popular. People will play anything online. Carmack really needs to surround himself with better designers. The id Software of today isn't the id Software of 6 years ago.

this game was indeed hyped years ago as the next big thing for PC's.... MS needed some title that would really grab people's attention for the Xbox, and decided to change the process.

For the best anyhow. With the newer game engines and hardware that PC's are embracing, console's will remain in thier rightful place, as far less than the ultimate way to play a game... especially one like HALO.

Lets see..... awful control scheme, limited multiplayer, and no modifications possible..... no thanks, I'll pass. As pretty as it looks, and while console's do have a good place for quick arcade- style games, HALO is a reminder that FPS are best played on a PC, and that isnt going to change anytime soon.

Oh, and to the person below stating that the XBOX can get better framerates than a PC..... please hit yourself with a clue by four.

Id software a gaming engine studio????!!!!!
Dont be a fucking retard, has Id ever licenced an engine
BEFORE they released a game that runs on it????
Well have they????
And the fact that their games are simple is PART of their
appeal, its a FEATURE not a BUG.
Everyone likes to go on a virtual rampage now and then, without real motivation. Thats what Id software's games were
all about. I have yet to see a game that comes close to
doom's (version 1) atmosphere and playability, Serious Sam
comes close but not close enough. And Halo though pretty damn good game, will not be showing up on the PC.

Don't they? As a company, every single employee is "overhead", as a consumer, I am "profit". They owe "me" everything.
Not quite. As a "development" company, they work for the "publisher". As a "subsidiary" of the "publisher", they do not deal directly with the "customers".
With "freelance" development companies, they're "contracted". They rarely deal directly with the actual "money" from the game. They get paid a regular salary. The publisher is their client. They can get royalties, but that's about 10% of what they actually get paid.
It's the publisher that owes you something. Saying a developer owes you something is like saying that the cement mixer of the company that was hired by the company you work for to construct the building you work in owes you something.
You can only consume the product of the producer.

I'd like to know exactally how they think they can compete on the PC market with games like Breed coming out.
And I think Planetside goes without mentioning.

re post 50: I surely believe that Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2 will be excellent games qua gameplay. But I think it would be foolish to compare these games on the graphics side with DOOM III.

At the moment there is nothing that can touch DOOM III in the visuals department. Not even Halo. But hey, would we have expected anything else from the wizards of id Software? ]

Er... Just so you're aware... none of the three games you have mentioned are out yet... much less a demo, so in truth you have NO CLUE if the games will be good or crap, do you?

Oh, and by the time Doom III does come out, it'll be around 1 to 2 years after the release of Halo... it oughta' have better visuals, dont'cha think?

Bungie sees money.
Not gamers and their support and a strong fan-base that will stick with them for decades.

Case in point. IdSoftware.

Puh-leeese! Are you friggin kidding me? You obviously think Halo is Bungie's first game. Ever heard fo the Marathon series? A little pair of games called Myth & Myth II? The self-proclaimed "Bungie Community" spans the world and is made up of some of the most intelligent and thoughtful people I've ever run into on the Internet, much less in real life.

Id Software? You're kidding right? They're a gaming ENGINE studio... their games aren't all that to crow about. Want proof?... the most popular FPS (without question) is Half-Life and it's assorted mods. That's a game that runs on a modified QUAKE (version 1) engine. How great can Id Software be if their last two engine/game iterations can't even beat out something that was written in 1998 (IIRC).

Halo will be fun on the PC and the Mac. Stop yer beggin'.

it's not hard to have 2 to 3x the speed in a pc anyway, the core clock speed of the Xbox really isn't that high. Effective 2-3x speed increase in terms of game performance might be tough though... you'd likely need multiprocessing to take some of the OS load off a high end processor, a really good 3d card and a ton of memory (SCSI + a commercial HD would help too). Might just manage 2 to 3 times if you turned down the resolution to the same as a TV (can't remember if NTSC is 320 pixels across... may be)

Oh please. Half of you, now that A PC version of Halo looks unlikely, have thrown their rattles out of their prams screaming "well, I didn't want Halo anyway, so ner!". The other half think Microsoft is the root of all evil (it's business, people, grow the hell up!).

Halo's been "commercialised" for the XBox? What?? And somehow PC games aren't commercial? As PC users, are we part of some underground scene that only a select few know about? Where games are made for the love, not the money?

Jeez, crawl out of your parents basements, children. It's just a game. And for all of you going on about the hype surrounding the PC release before it became an XBox title: BUNCH OF ARSE! There were bits and pieces in magazines, but there was hardly full-on commercial hype. That's like saying Star Trek: Assimilator was hyped before it was cancelled. It wasn't, it had merely been announced and a couple of screenshots bandied about.

And how do you know how much the game has changed from the PC version? How do you know it's been simplified? Loads of game studios announce ambitious features that never make it or are toned down for the final game, and that's just PCs. Maybe certain features never made it to the XBox, but for all you know, that could have nothing to do with the platform, but with the fact that their ideas were too ambitious.

But no, stuff it. You'd all rather hate something, or blame something, cry like babies and scream how unfair the world is, because it doesn't go your way.

They knew it would be the X-tinct box all along. How do you think they came up with the name. It's just MS's way of trying to get some market share at the expense of good titles beign released for the PC.

The fact is Bungie would never have released HALO if Microsoft hadn't come to the rescue. As much as I hate to admit it Bungie would not exist today if it wasn't for M$crosoft. If you read any previous interviews with Bungie people at the time of the take over, they state quite clearly that M$crosoft saved the game.
