Morrowind Q&A

RPG Vault rounds off their long-running Morrowind Q&A series with a final, conventional installment that quizzes Bethesda Softworks project leader Todd Howard about their just-released 3D role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Todd looks back at the project, discussing his feelings about completing it and about how it turned out, the main gameplay features they aimed to realize, development challenges they faced along the way, some of things he learned from the project, possible plans for the future, and more.

Amen to that, brother. Morrowind is fucking rad.

Although I have to admit--I'm never totally happy with any game... The Elder Scrolls Construction Set allows me to change that.

Thanks, Bethesda. It was worth the wait.

I just spent three and a half hours questing...and I never left Vivec. Almost four hours in one city, and that's like a hundredth of the area of the game world, and that's not counting all the running around I've done in the city before, and I didn't even go to three of the cantons. This game could take me all summer to beat; I'm one of the "join every faction and get every quest" people, so I've joined groups as disparate as the Imperial Guard, the Imperial Cult, the Imperial Temple, the Mages, Fighters, and Thieves Guild, and even the Marog Tong. No one particularly likes me for that last one, I notice. But it's fun...the game is such a timesink, it's unbelievable. Too bad it won't sell half of what Dungeon Siege will, probably, but it deserves all the success it gets. I'm still boggled by the size of the game world; it's beyond anything I've ever seen rendered into 3D.

Hear hear! Morrowind does indeed rule. And it even runs on my Voodoo5.

Vivec is just plain enormous. That was probably the point when I realized, "Y'know, I don't think I'm ever going to see everything in this game. I might as well not even worry about it."

"We were aiming for about 200 hours of gameplay and ended up with around 500. Oops. :)"

Rarely do you get both quantity and quality in one game. And that's not counting all those mods being released. w00t!

Who needs multiplayer ...

I have pretty much half that performance of the system you listed - 700 MHz P3, GF2MX.

I can get 20 FPS in towns on this system. Something is wrong with your system somehwere thats' creating a bottleneck.

Yeah, something's definitely wrong with your system, #8. I'm running Morrowind on a tbird 1100 with a gf3 ti200 and it's more than playable at 1024. I even have the view distance set in the middle and have even enabled some real time shadows. Either you're running at 1600x1200 with fsaa or something's really wrong.

I've been looking on the official morrowind forums and a lot of people are having the same problems...I've updated all my drivers and messed with bios settings, tweaked my graphics card settings with the GTU,

People are even saying it's the safedisk protection that is causing the slowdowns on some systems... *sigh* I'll keep trying though...
