Out of the Blue

Running our mail server on an HP scientific calculator has proven an interesting and eventful experience, but unfortunately we seem to have stressed it once again, since it seems to currently be blindly redirecting incoming mail into the bit bucket. Considering the amount of spam and viral mail we receive, this demonstrates pretty good judgment. Unfortunately, no matter what proportion of it is worthless, we still get loads of mail we would like to read, so once again we've got Scotty running around engineering making metaphors about our chances at a repair, while also furiously looking to see if we can get something more reliable to serve as a mail server like a C-64 or one of those clever birds from The Flintstones who can chisel words onto slabs of rock so quickly. In the meantime, if you have anything you'd like to let us know about, please continue to use the temporary bluesnews@abydos.com address.

I've got an Atari 1200 you could have. I always liked that better than the c-64.

Right, theAntiELVIS is just misinformed. Everyone should know that the HP's advanced formal abilities let them handle mail faster than any other calculator.

The barbie thing was funny - but not $823 worth of funny. My god, some people just have too much money.

With regards to the IMDB blurb titled, "Lord Of The Rings Madness", this is just another example of wackos who aren't happy unless they're protesting something, even if that something is as silly and unfounded as this. Why do so many clueless dolts feel that it is their duty to protect the rest of the world from their own delusions?

If you guys actually read some of the responses, you would see that 90% of them are:

1) Sarcasm, or an attempt thereof
2) Utter ridicule at such a moronic idea
3) some combination of 1 & 2

Since you're having e-mail problems, why don't you setup a link on the front page to post e-mail news that otherwise would get lost, to a private forum that only you can read. That way when your e-mail server goes down, anyone can post news to your board. Just make sure that they have to login in to do it.
Interesting idea, but I'm afraid it's not that practical. A lot of the mail we get is from companies and other sites that use mailing lists, and they simply have the news@bluesnews.com address included as one of many. We certainly can't expect them to specifically visit our site and post, say, a press release into that forum, when a mailing list is so much more convenient to them.

Further, our mention of the temporary address yesterday in the news, and using it in the menu & title bars, is not really picked up by everyone visiting us and then sending in a story, as we got less than half the mail volume we normally get from people not using the aforementioned mailing lists. I guess folks often have the news@ address already in their address book, and old habits are hard to temporarily break.

Maybe everyone even gets used to posting news for your access only and it might even start taking a big load of your server.
Our mail is handled by a different machine than the rest of the site (and one we don't have direct access to, that's a big part of the problem). So using a submission forum on our website would actually add (however little) to our server load rather than reduce it.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's feedback, our mail server resumed its duties a few hours ago, so we'll be fine until the next calamity or until we move elsewhere (which is being worked on for some time already).

theAntiELVIS was very badly mistaken when he wrote: "Much better programmable calculator"

I'll have you know, sir, that the HP 49G has the most powerful CAS of any graphing calculator, plus it sports more RAM than any TI calc so it will definately NOT handle more mail.

I would rather be dead than live without my beloved HP 49G.

The story is on the previous days news.

Did anyone read the story on the morons who are petitioning to ban Peter Jackson from calling the second Lord Of The Rings movie The Two Towers. The petition argues that Jackson is referring to the attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center last September - even though author J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, "The Two Towers," was written 48 years ago.

You should give it a try, you're not going to lose anything by trying it.

Besides, this should really cut back big time on the spam problem since you really shouldn't be getting any or very little spam that way. Die, spam, die!

Blue,

Have you considered giving SpamCop's (http://www.spamcop.net) e-mail services a whirl? Their filters are supposed to be excellent nearly eliminating 100% of any incoming spam... The viruses, well, you should have a good AV software running anyhow, so, no biggie there. Just a suggestion if missed mail continues to be a problem. And no, I'm not an employee and Istand to gain nothing from recommending SC.net.

My wife pointed this one out to me the other day. She told me to submit it to that 'geeky gaming site'. I guess I should listen to her a little more often.

I was suprised to see that Barbie let her ass go like that.
