Out of the Blue

We had a rare server outage for yesterday, unfortunately it occurred during one of those rare stints when Frans (who is far less of a monkey about these things than I am) was unchained from his computer so it went on a few hours longer than it needed to, sorry about that.

The dance thing yesterday wasn't as torturous as I imagined. I guess it would have been hard to live up to my dread--that's part of the benefit of fearing the worst. I had completely forgotten the a fail-safe bit of entertainment one can always count on from these things... I have one word for you: Danskin.

Finally, today is Saint Patrick's Day, one of those annual celebrations that's often accompanied by the raising of a glass or two -- please be careful out there on the roads, as this always increases the chances of tragedy (I saw some of our fine New York State Troopers doing random intoxication tests on a nearby route last night to deter this). But of course, if you are celebrating, have a great time. Erin Go Bragh! (Whatever that means.)

Play Time: FLOW. Flash required. Thanks Sharon.
Link of the Day: LDN DOOM Miniatures. I have some of these, and now this has me thinking about trying to paint them (though I would make the demons pink).

Aye. My family hails from County Fermanagh, so you who have issue with Northern Ireland, shove it!

Watch Braveheart. Now, imagine if it were Northern Ireland and not Scotland. Ayy, not so clear-cut anymore, is it?

Oddly, even though Prima Nocte didn't really exist, it's been used in Northern Ireland in a different way; the Brits shipping over Scots and English to supplant the native Irish population and religion. Ah well.

Unfortunately, it's gotten so bad that even the Republic doesn't care much for Ulster anymore. Damned bloody shame, what the Brits have done.

The Doom Miniatures are pretty cool, I own a Baron and a Cyber Demon. The Demon hasn't been painted yet (they're pretty frustrating to paint unless you have tiny paint brushes), but the Baron is painted and awesome. Hasn't really come in handy, but I'm sure someone will ask about it eventually =)

In reality, gentlemen, it means so much more. The dictionary does not tell the story.

To speak the phrase as the Irish do, know their history. When Ireland was young, the British conquered her. So, her sons fought in foreign wars in strange lands for a King they despised. Her children went hungry, starved and died. Her people left in droves for the smallest chance to make a better life. To this day, the Irish are very proud of their long fight for self-governance (as negotiated by Michael Collins). They were done with living or dying on a monarch's whim. So, when you raise your pint, know this –

Now here's to Tom Pearce and our comrades who died
Tom Clark, McDunna, McDurmott, McBryde,
And here's to Jan Connelly who gave one hurrah,
And placed the machine guns for Erin Go Bragh.

Patrick was indeed welsh. He was captured by irish pirates and sold as a slave. He was eventually given his freedom and returned to wales, but then came back to convert pagan ireland to christianity. And if it wasn't for the fact that we get an extra day-off a year to go drinking, I'd never have forgiven him for that!

There are about 3.5 million living in the republic (and about another million or so in the north, but I'm not sure about that). There are currently 12 million people with Irish passports worldwide.

OK, 1 in 1000 was far too low a percentage. I didn't mean for people to use it instead of census results or anything. Although anon's comment that his relatives married other Irish settlers means less people have Irish blood as people like him effectively have twice the amount - but that hardly makes a noticable difference.

I appreciate the comment saying I should stick my head in a toilet. What was that for??

EDIT: I believe St. Patrick was Welsh, but I'm not sure.

Cheers,
Xain

St Patrick (c. 385-c.461 A.D.) was a Roman Briton from what is now northwest England. He was abducted from England at the age of sixteen and brought as a slave to Ireland.

Of course, the English were still living in Germany, so Patrick was, if anything, a Welshman.

However, names ending in "rick" are generally of Germanic origin, meaning "king" or "leader", so he may have been of German descent.

Well that comes as no suprise. Space aliens visit the United States more than they visit Europe, so naturally we have more space aliens (or possibly plant people) living among us.

I believe Blue is referring to the thin, tight fitting material from which dance outfits are made. Yes, it is one of the marvels of the twentieth century.

The population of Ireland is roughly 3,000,000 and it has been reported that there is more green blood in the United States than in Ireland. Boston alone has roughly 100,000 people of Irish descent.

Northern Ireland can go stick it's head in a toilet.

1 in 1000? Let's see..

As of the 2000 census, the US population is 281 million. According to the 2000 census, 75.1% of those are white. (This is, of course, ignoring biracial Irish, or people descended from the Irish conclaves in Argentina and other places. But we need simplicity) That means 211 million Americans are white. 1/1000 would mean that only 211 thousand Americans were descended from Irish - a number that even you can see is entirely too small.

I'd raise it at least to 1/100 and maybe 1/50. Hell, the populations of Boston and Savannah (locations of the two largest St Patricks Day parades) combined are 720 thousand; I would wager at least half of that alone is descended from Irish.

We're a far more Irish country than we let on.

There's alot more than 1 in 1000 with alot more than distant relations. My family came over about 140 years ago, and have mostly married other people of Irish descent, at least for the first 100 years.

St. Patrick's day, the most pathetic day in the year. Around here at least.

Half the country celebrates, the other half refuse to do a thing, even refusing to take the day off work or school. Why? Because he's the patron Saint of Ireland and they live in Northern Ireland. As I tell them, that's bullshit. St. Patrick lived in County Down, in Northern Ireland. Instead of refusing to celebrate, these people should celebrate for the patron saint of Northern Ireland.

Me? I just take the opportunity to get drunk and do nothing. One leason we should learn from our across-Atlantic friends. For that matter, why do you celebrate it? Because 1 in 1000 have a slight distance connection to Ireland? I guess that's a good enough reason to get hammered!

Cheers,
Xain
