Paul Jaquays Departs id

Paul Jaquays updated his .plan file, the id Software designer announcing he is departing the company, almost five years to the day after he joined them. Admitting his "heart just isn’t in it any more," when it comes to working on id's trademark shooters, Paul goes on to announce that he's taken a position at Ensemble Studios, home to another id Software alumnus, Sandy Petersen. He caps off the update with a postscript: "… and don’t worry about Doom, the guys who have been doing all the really cool stuff for the game are still busting their chops hard as ever on it."

It's a good thing that he realized his being there and feeling that way may have harmed the game, quite a noble thing to do since he was making $400k per year. I could also understand if he felt a little uncomfortable with some of the content going into Doom, since he's Christian and all. Although Doom is kind of a pro-christian game, what with all the Daemon killing.

I heard Carmack hasn't touched his computer in weeks and won't talk to anyone not even his friends.

'Heart not in it'? Is this an indication of the quality of the new Doom game?

You forgot to take your ritalin, didn't you? Paul Jayquay's is a good guy. And for crying out loud, I remember him announcing that policy on quake3world and I don't think he made it up all by his lonesome. Its called company policy. If you had a job you might know what I was talking about. If you do have a job then I wonder how you could talk that way.

Hopefully they'll find a suitable replacement for him.

By all accounts, he was one of the good guys.

Good luck at Ensemble.

Who needs his ass there anyway! He was the JaqAss that started telling mappers that after YEARS of converting maps from DooM and Quake to Quake 2 and Quake 3 that they couldn't do it any more. Good riddance to him I say.

Considering how long it's been since Doom was announced, I'd guess they are pretty far along by now...

It's not like they are 3DRealms or something... ;p

wow, I can sorta relate to him as "not being in it" anymore...after working a year as a graphic design intern it really tested my patience...it's really important you enjoy the company and the people you work with, since your nearly forced to be there everyday. Good luck paul.

Cool shift to see someone of that talent join the already talented crew at Ensemble. He should have some interesting things to add to that mix, though AoM is probably too far along for his input, maybe the next AoK is just right...

Interesting...

Never expected him to leave so far into Doom's development. I wonder what he's going to be doing exactly over at Ensemble.
