Counter-Strike 1.4 & Steam Beta

In an unprecedented move, Valve Software has apparently opened the beta test of Counter-Strike 1.4 and their new Steam content delivery system to the public. CS-Nation has instructions and downloads of the Steam client setup and the key generator that will allow you play C-S 1.4 and the latest versions of Half-Life, TeamFortress Classic and Day of Defeat after registration (and also try the new Tracker instant messaging system), while Planet Half-Life and Shacknews have additional mirrors. It is important to note that the Steam system is designed for broadband users only, and that this is a beta test rather than an official release.

lighten up people. its not like they have their whole team working on HL shit, they are divided and I bet the majority is actually working on their next games.. which is probably why these seemingly simple patches are taking so long

I talked to Adrian Grant on IRC. I told him that I think it is a shame that a company like Valve is milking a franchise like HL for all it is worth when they could be releasing new games. I told him that people as a whole are losing respect for the name valve as they are becoming a one hit wonder.

He said that people will be amazed when we see what they have been working on.

I said, "If we ever see it. I don't know about HL2 (if there is to be such a thing) but TF2 I know has been restarted from scratch at least 3 times if not 4. Every time you guys have gotten close, you have started over."

For your information there have been people calling CS the most realistic game (and not just FPS).

Some people like CS because they think it is realistic.

And insulting gets you nothing but disrespect, by the way. Next time you should attempt to converse in a more intelligent manner if you want to keep your integrity (whatever integrity an anonymous poster has is beyond me, anyway).

You really give reasons as to why it is supposed to be a realistic mod with the ability to jump. A REALISTIC MOD.

FFS CAN YOU READ MY MESSAGE

It's NOT a realistic mod, it's a fun mod with realistic weapons. If it was a purely realistic mod it would be boring, brutish and short, a bit like you.

If you had bothered reading you would have seen that I and everyone else worth knowing do not like realistic mods. People do not play CS for its realism like you wish they would, they play it because it is accessible and fun. That is why there are 100,000 CS players and about 3 Rogue Spear players online at this moment.

No-one says CS is the most realistic FPS out there! Where are you getting these lunatic statements from? I have no bubble that needs to be burst! I would try to follow your thought processes but I think I would need a lobotomy first.

And I do have a login, but it's so dirty (yet satisfying and useful) calling people names. You are of course quite welcome to ignore me.

Of course, if that was entirely true then you wouldn't have to buy an entirely new CD and CD-Key every time you lose media or something happens to the media your software is on. Since you are just paying for the license (the right to have and use the software) then you should really have full unlimited access to copies of the software as the situation demands. Much like DVD's and VHS tapes. You're paying for the license to view these items. So why does it make sense to have to buy them ALL OVER AGAIN when a new format is released or your tape gets melted or your DVD is scratched into oblivion? IT DOESN'T make sense. They're just screwing you over in every direction.

I don't like the idea of buying software and then never actually owning it.

Legally, you don't own any software you buy. What you buy is a license to use the software, and that license has limits. The only entity that actually owns the software is the entity that created it.

Subscription makes sense for games that require something from the vendor, (i.e. Everquest), but valve doesn't run all the servers out there. They will be making money off of the people who work hard maintaining their own servers for their friends.

No where does it say that using Steam will be required. It's an optional service that you can use (by paying for it, of course) if you want to use Valve's neat little gizmos - the Tracker thingy, automatically downloading new patches so you no longer have to whine about FilePlanet's Soviet-era queue system, and so on. If you're fine with what you've got now, nobody's going to be asking for extra money from you, as far as I can tell.

My apologies to any non-ass Valve employees.

Has anyonenoticed the direction this is going? Steam is an all-in-one subscription service. It says during the test that it is FREE OF CHARGE, but that doesn't mean that it always will be. This makes great sense at first. They can now charge you to play their games all the time! I don't like the idea of buying software and then never actually owning it.

Subscription makes sense for games that require something from the vendor, (i.e. Everquest), but valve doesn't run all the servers out there. They will be making money off of the people who work hard maintaining their own servers for their friends.

I don't like the .Net initiative and it's ramifications on my wallet.

That aside, i think the new tracker addition is kinda nifty. Imagine that you are the team captain in a league match. You can group together your team mates into differnt IMs. Squad one, you cover the right flank, Squad 2 you push the rush forward, I'll carry the bomb to the site and plant it.

the get a little signal saying they hve a message, after the round is over they tap f1 for a second to read the new orders and then they tap it again, buy their gear and are off on a perfectly communicated plan. And you don't have to worry about the other team's server admin sitting at the console reading off all the messages you send back and forth to your team mates.

"I just wanted to chime in and let everyone know that number 24 is a real fucking idiot."

great, 24, give no reason as to why. You're just another anon posting nonsense.

NEXT!

Poster 38, wow. You really give reasons as to why it is supposed to be a realistic mod with the ability to jump. A REALISTIC MOD.

Mind you, that's the only thing they had going for them in the earlier versions. People even say that CS is the most realistic FPS out there. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but you just contradicted what you're standing up for.

Oh, and petty insults are not respected here by the more wise members here. You know, the ones who actually reigstered a name.

I can't believe that the ability ot jump was even implimented in CS when it is supposed to be a realistic mod.

I despise you more than I can express. I'm not quite sure why, but your entire being revolts me. Just want to get that out the way before I reply to you.

CS was meant to be a fun mod with realistic weapons. Not a fucking load of boring tactical shite like Rogue Spear or the equivalent. They make good SP games sure, but comparing their multiplayer gameplay to CS is absolutely zero contest.

PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP FOREVER!!!

The point of creating DMC was to provide an example to developers of how a total conversion is done in HL. DMC source is included in SDK 2.2. The mod itself should be splitted as a separate download anyway...

TFC is still a great mod with a huge base of fans (me included)

Some days ago I had an issue with my DoD server crashing, I e-mailed to VALVe's server admin mail list. Leon Hartwig (linux guru @ valve) gave me a solution in less than 3 hours. NO OTHER COMPANY DOES THAT FOR FREE.
