Counter-Strike 1.4 & Steam Beta

In an unprecedented move, Valve Software has apparently opened the beta test of Counter-Strike 1.4 and their new Steam content delivery system to the public. CS-Nation has instructions and downloads of the Steam client setup and the key generator that will allow you play C-S 1.4 and the latest versions of Half-Life, TeamFortress Classic and Day of Defeat after registration (and also try the new Tracker instant messaging system), while Planet Half-Life and Shacknews have additional mirrors. It is important to note that the Steam system is designed for broadband users only, and that this is a beta test rather than an official release.

I am sick of all these new versions of cs and updates, i just want 1 version to stay. make one version stay and the only diffrence will be creating new skins. im sick of restarting my server to the currrent versions. i just got finished setting my server up to 1.3 and i made it so i could stop cheaters. Now i have to do the hole (#^#($%#@ thing over again for 1.4, then in the summer 1.5!!!

i agree with the people who are tired of counter strike, it would be nice for valve to try working on an anti-cheat mod moreso then on putting in huge patches for future games. when i play now i always get ridiculed (and often booted) for "having an aim hack." Cheaters have definately ruined online gaming all together and the only time i can really enjoy any games is at LAN parties with my friends.

besides, how many patches are they going to apply to CS before they actually put out a final version. Please, just leave this game alone for a while at least and work on the next CS-successful-type game, i don't know why but Blizzard is able to pop them suckers out like candy. It seems to me that all valve is doing is sitting on their asses, putting in minimal effort while riding the CS/HL train until it runs out of gas.

It's sad that people like you (69, 66, 65, etc, anyone who thinks name calling makes you look intellectual) have to resort to name calling. Perhaps you'd (69) like to explain why you hope that I can't download files from Fileplanet. Did I do something to hurt you? Did I call you a derogatory name, even though I have no idea what your educational background is? Or is it just that you aren't satisfied with your own life, so you wish ill will on those more fortunate than you? Or is it even more petty? Maybe you just get your kicks calling people names from the safety of your computer.

Just out of curiousity, where are you going to get your downloads if FilePlanet goes out of business? If you already have another source, then FPs lines shouldn't bother you. If you don't, then you should probably be thankful that you're getting something for free, instead of bitching about it.

I agree with 64. While I don't like the idea of paying to download demos at all, the option is certainly viable at this low of a cost.

I think it is nazis like 65 and 66 (same person, anyway) that keep try to shorthand the world the way they want it.

Amazing how you managed to contradict yourself.(#63) You seem to agree with the notion that Fileplanets queue system is Soviet-like...yet you think they deserve to go out of business for attempting to exercise their right to Capitalism by charging money for a service. Perhaps you'd rather they open all the queues so everyone can get a .5kbit download speed. Stop complaining and pay the 6.95 a month to get a guaranteed server with no waiting. Amazing how people like you get upset when you can't get something for nothing. Heck, you ALREADY don't have to pay for CS. Stop bitching that some FREE site places restrictions on downloading. Maybe they *are* doing it in attempts to make some money. More power to them. I'm glad I can pay the 6.95 a month and get guaranteed downloads and good speeds.

I think it's fairly obvious that copies of Half-Life that continue to be sold in fairly significant numbers (for a three year old game) aren't sold just because of the standalone game on the CD. Valve's effort to support their community and their game over the last three years (and counting) is a big factor to their bottom line, at least as far as selling copies of Half-Life and now Counter-Strike (soon Counter-Strike: Condition Zero) are concerned.

True, but thats not charging for "maintaining support". Thats adding value to a product to sell it to new customers. My point is that once you've bought the game , everything else is free. It damn sure beats what I've seen some other companies do, patching a game to fix crippling bugs or add essential functions, then releasing it as an "add-on pack" and charging another $30.

i gotta comment on another thing that I find amusing. lots of people on here are bashing valve for their need for money money money. I think the real problem is the mis-informed fans who actually went out and bought counterstrike retail when they could have downloaded it for nothing. The retail version of CS sucks ass. So many times they had to put out little fixes for problems in the retail version. also I agree with 56, just like every developer valve can and is multitasking their game projects. Im kinda disappointed we arent getting at least occasional progress reports but I guess thats the way they choose to work.

Most of your post, 56, is pretty good. Except the fact that on ICQ, mIRC, and other forms of chat will I find players denote CS the most realistic FPS. And, unfortunately for you, I have played other HL mods, so you seem to be the one who doesn't know what he's talking about.

As for my insults. Yell, duh. Denouncing all anonymous posters? I see what you mean, when I stated that they do not have integrity.

Well no shit. They have no history, static ip's change, and so fourht. If you don't even know who it is half of the time, and have no post history, then of course their integrity will not match those who are registered. And plus, we have a name for others' reference, too.

Though I'm doing little more than supporting some of you who posted earlier, I'd still like to say that I think Valve has been doing a great job. I was introduced to Half-Life over two and a half years ago and have been hooked ever since. I think Gooseman and the rest of the team who created and are continually working on CounterStrike did a great job. I've put more hours into the game than I can remember putting into any other... and all for under fifty dollars!

I've read all the posts and I'm not sure what you're all complaining about. You all seem to be under the impression that Valve can only do one thing at once. They can release old Half-Life updates *AND* work on a yet to be announced game. They can multitask! And also (as was mentioned earlier) the entire CS community are acting as beta testers for new features (like voice communication) which Valve intends to release in new games.

As for their anti-cheat technology - we'll just have to wait and see. I'd be thrilled to see some sort of update that can significantly reduce amount of cheating... even if it's for just a few weeks. I personally think cheaters have ruined the CS community. Though there are a large number of cheaters, everyone automatically assumes that *anyone* who is skilled has some sort of aimbot. I'm quite tired of listening to people whine and equally tired of playing against players with 300+ pings who can instantaneously headshot me before I have time to react. I'd love to see the community return to the days when the scariest hack turned you into a chicken.

As for realism - I don't think there are any serious gamers out there who will claim Counterstrike is the most realistic game on the market. Anyone who thinks so hasn't played anything made since Half-Life was released. However, you'll find a lot of very serious gamers who will tell you that counterstrike is FUN. It adds just ENOUGH realism to be interesting, but not so much as to make the game dull. I think it's a great balance.

As for the "jumping" issue... human beings can jump. They really can. Try it yourself. Just bend your knees slightly and push hard against the ground with your legs. With any luck, you'll be airborn in no time. However, I do think that the ability to hop around like a Mexican jumping bean and fire your weapon with the same accuracy as you would standing still is rather silly. It's something that should have been fixed a while ago. Of course, now many of the "good" players are habitually jumping/firing. It will be interesting to see how 1.4 affects their gameplay.

Lastly, and this is addressed to you "teh mane mahn", the fact that you registered doesn't make your opinion any more or less valid than the user who is posting onto these boards for the first time. Some of us (myself included) rarely post on these particular boards and haven't found it worthwhile to register. Others simply prefer anonymity - why you think this makes their opinions less valid is beyond me. Oh yes - I also found it humorous that within two consecutive sentences you managed to denounce insults and then insult a whole group of people. Bravo.

Anyway... happy gaming all.

- Sabran

Gooseman is living it up on some remote beach spending his 5 mill worrying more about the next paycheck...i can remember back in the days of scoped colts and the only hack anyone had made you turn into the chicken...remember when it WASNT about the money...too bad money makes the world go round...you give them 40 bucks they take away the ability to jump in the game...maybe if the tke our jumping theyll give us more spam and hell throw in a respawn w00t movezig
