Out of the Blue

Seems like a good time for a rummage through the news archive to see what turns up: As was noted at the time in our ever-informative date bar, it was six years ago Sunday that Qtest was released. It was five years ago today that John Cash (then of id Software) tossed down the Girl Scout Cookies gauntlet, spurring our epic debate over the merits of his favorites (Somoas) and mine (Thin Mints) that has now spanned half a decade. It was four years ago today a GameSpot article quoted John Romero saying that Human Head Studios had begun preliminary work with ION Storm on Daikatana II (though apparently this plan had already changed by year's end), and that Daikatana was due September of that year (1998). Speaking of things that didn't quite come to pass, it was three years ago today that Metabyte revealed their plans to revolutionize the graphics marketplace by creating drivers that would allow the use of a pair of video cards "in a parallel configuration using any existing chip on the market," something that doesn't seem to have happened. It was two years ago today that Zoid departed id Software to join on at Retro Studios, which was the day after it was announced that Myscha the sled dog had departed The Collective to join on at Cyan. Finally it was one year ago today that first hints surfaced about the cancellation of TWINE, the planned PC/PS2 Quake-engine James Bond game, rumors that were later confirmed (though some of PS2 TWINE ended up in Agent Under Fire).

Play Time: SURFACE.YUGOP.COM. Flash required. Thanks Matt McInnis.

No, I don't hate all snowboarders. I've snowboarded myself a few times. I only hate the inconsiderate ones who sit in the middle of the slopes right below a mogul, where they're a lethal hazard to anyone above them. (You can tell I've almost ran over a few of these morons before.)

...at least it'd take care of all those idiot snowboarders who bail and sit right in the middle of the slope (in a spot where the people above can't see them). I'm all for anything that helps with snowboarder population control!

Ah, another jealous skier who realises the inferiority of his sport! At least when we bail, there isn't the subsequent obstacle course of skis and poles strewn across the slope! And BTW, not all snowboarders are as inconsiderate as to sit in the middle of the slope. I sit off to the side every time. So please don't hate me just because snowboarders are way cooler than skiers.

I agree- gibbage looks like it'd be a major hazard. And what about those people who bail up at the top and get sucked into the ramp, like a giant, evil escalator? Hmmm- well at least it'd take care of all those idiot snowboarders who bail and sit right in the middle of the slope (in a spot where the people above can't see them). I'm all for anything that helps with snowboarder population control!

I am certainly the odd-man out. My true love in Girl Scout cookies are Trefoils. Plain cookie, I know. but give me a pile of em, and a wide-mouthed cup of milk, and I'm in dunking heaven.

Explain why you think it would never work. I think If it did work people would be restricted to about a 5 degree arc on it and it would be the most boring slope imaginable, but I think I might be feasible. But dumb.

Yes, Samoas rule... and here I am on a diet.

You guys are killing me!

Welp, time to make my salad and slap a chicken breast on the George Forman Grill (marinated in Yoshida's sauce, of course).

This update makes me think that the game industry is oft-times like collecting baseball cards. "Oh, I'll trade you a Myscha the sled dog for your Zoid." "No way man, this is a foil Zoid."

Instead of telling us what game developers were in the news years ago, tell us which games were in the news years ago. I already feel old when I think about when some of my favorites came out.

Here we were having a meaningful and civilized argument over the superiority of Thin Mints and you have to bring up this eco crap??? C'mon, is that really anywhere near the level of importance that is held by those little morsels being handed out by eight year olds everywhere across the whole US of A? I mean at the rate we are all eating these horridly fat-filled delicacies, we won't live another 20 years. That would be barely enough time to see the destruction of the chain that holds the ecosystem in balance. Geez

ok, im gonna have nightmares about that polar bear for awhile. and why does he have a british (or some other fake smart type) accent when this is an american bill? i for one have no problem drilling in the artic. as much as i hate the smog in LA, i must admit that without all the industry that produces it i wouldnt have any of the nicities i enjoy so much. industry is not a natural resource either.

Have you ever taken two nips out of either side of a thin mint and then used it as a straw for milk? What you end up with is a hollow shell of chocolate. Try it. You know you want to.

when will the rest of the snacking world learn that you cannot go wrong with Peanut-butter and Chocolate?

You got chocolate in my peanut butter... You got peanut butter on my chocolate!

But I do prefer the thin mints myself. They're perfect when chilled in the freeze for a little bit. But this year, that little urchin who goes door to door hasn't returned with any of my cookies. I fear this are going to get very bloody if I don't get my cookies.

Well shiat. If Qtest came out 6 years ago sunday, then I have been officially gaming online for just over 6 years now. I did wolfy and doom before that, but Quake was the first real online shooter IMO.

6 years of gaming, starting my seventh. There's no stopping me now.

BRING ON QUAKE4!
