Dungeon Siege Preview

There's a Dungeon Siege Preview on Packmule.Org offering their impressions of the beta of Gas Powered Games' upcoming RPG starting at the beginning with installation (actually, beginning with a nap), creating a character, camera options, the interface, combat, spells, skills, graphics, impressions of the games performance on several different systems, and some conclusions. And elsewhere, Dungeon Siege Center has added another 41 new screenshots to their sprawling gallery starting with the sixth shot on this page

Well guys... being on the beta like Packmule.org I have tried DS on a p2-450 and a p4-2.2ghz... Low res and max res settings. There is a difference in detail, no doubt. At full detail the little touches amaze you. There is SO much vegatation, flowers, trees, and little things that you awe in every little place. Just as example, in 1 dungeon there were lots of little little spiders all running around the big spiders... just there are little details. Granted you won't see this detail on low detail settings. It really fleshes out the game. Granted it IS NOT Diablo... It seriously plays ALOT like Darkstone, which is not bad at all... It does have limited skills but focuses more on spells later on in the game.

The engine, bar none, is revolutionary. I have played numerous times to just realize having NO level load menus in game, that I just spent over 3-6 hours playing and didn't even realize it!

The biggest aspect is not the 40-60 hour single player game... it is the multiplayer game that is supposedly DOUBLE the size of the single player game (which a completely different set of maps/levels/dungeons/etc). Also the engine is mod ready... So people can mod this out of the box...

You can't do that with Diablo or Darkstone ...

I keep on going back and forth as to whether or not I want this game. It looks like a neat RPG (YAY!), the previews talk about things being simplified (eh, already get that with the "Light RPG" Diablo), and its look reminds me of playing through Vampire: The Masquerade (boo).

Edit: The performance comparison *is* a nice thing to have; I wish more (p)reviews and/or game developers did this.

Not leaning either way today ^_^,
Ray

I think it looks pretty good either way. I have a high end system, but it's nice to know that it's going to look pretty good even on the low end system. This is going to be a good one -- I want this and Neverwinter Nights so bad I can taste them...

I like how they posted comparison shots for max detail / min detail settings, and also gave approximate fps for a variety of systems (with believable specs, as opposed to the "this benchmark is on a P4 OC'ed to 2.8 ghz with 2gigs of DDR Ram" syndrome). For those interested, the pics are here:

Hard to tell how good the game looks, even in the best shot, simply because there don't seem to be many spell effects or colored lights or anything like that to ooh and ahh over, but it's useful for comparison's sake. Can't wait for this game...
