Out of the Blue

I just missed my resolution-imposed deadline this morning, but am still in the ballpark, I'll be back on track tomorrow.

I happened to notice that a year ago today began the Chinese New Year, but today does not follow suit, as the year of the Snake will continue until February 12, 2002, which is when the year of the Black Horse will begin (a little advance notice so you can start practicing writing year of the Black Horse on your checks).

Play Time: AMI BIOS or NOT. Thanks Brann Mitchell.
Link of the Day: Open Letter to DOJ Re: Microsoft Settlement. Thanks HobbesTheTiger.
Bonus Link: 555-LIST. Thanks Chris Johnson.
Story of the Day: Colombian nun jailed for sister's murder. Thanks Pongo.
Bonus Story: Lawyers See Fat Payoffs in Junk Food Lawsuits. Thanks dbodine. Another sign of the pending apocalypse.
Wild Science: HP Says Atom-Sized Computer Chips a Lot Closer. Thanks [MP]Kentobi[MP].
Media of the Day: Madame Ovary. Thanks Neurotic Juicer. For your child's party, naturally.

9:30 am and counting!

What are you counting, the 16 minutes since I posted at 9:14 (which is admittedly still late)?

Translation:

We, the State, will pass laws regarding the ability to file lawsuits against corporations of large fast food chains across America on the accountability of endangerment of health because we are too goddamn stupid to realize that it's our fault we are eating too much of their greasy grub. Let's go get some grub.

If someone wants to eat a Big Mac, more power to em'. If they want to eat 10 a day and turn into a 500 pound tub of goo, fine and dandy, just don't expect to turn fat into dollars through frivolous litigation.

The truly scary part of this is the States (and I mean states like New Jersey, etc.). Will float an idea that goes something like this:

Well, we (the States) have to foot the bill treating all the heart disease, acne, and low self esteem that people suffer from that are directly related to your product (meaning the people who 'push' sugar and grease). They will show just how much money flows from the State budget to cover these medical costs. The industries will crack and hand out several billion (why not, they will pass the cost onto the customer and they now look like concerned corporate citizens). Now the States take what's left (roughly 30% after the lawyers get theirs) and spend 98% of that on pork barrell projects that have nothing to do with promoting healthy eating. The remaining 2% will go to something like road improvements. So we can all get to the grease/sugar faster.

I think I should be able to sue IBM for developing electronics that have wasted 2/3 of my life.

absolutely crack cocaine - hand it out in schools, guns make em available a dime a dozen (oops you already did that), semtex on airplane flights just say yes. sex education - teach the kids how to sleep with teacher its the way forward,

Or maybe somethings have to be regulated and its up for discussion what those things might be.

Tobacco companies are paying for the fact that they lied through their teeth for years by telling everyone their products were non-hazerdous and non-habit forming, when they knew otherwise.
I will be the first to admit that our legal system needs an overhaul, though- things are way out of control. However, that article does make some good points- I'd probably eat more fruit if the vending machine in my office breakroom stocked apples as well as snickers...

This is just another glaring example of our lovely government's attempt to regulate each and every thing they can get their hands on. The tobacco lawsuits were a joke, and this is even more of one. The government will not be happy, and will not stop, until they have direct control over how you act, what you think, what you eat, how you walk, how you talk... George Orwell, anyone?

The real joke is that the tobacco lawsuits didn't stop anyone from smoking, just like fast-food lawsuits won't stop people from eating what they want. It'll just raise prices, that's all.

Just another example of how out-of-control our (USA) legal system has gotten. I've also heard that lawsuits have now been filed against the airlines for the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

#3, Very true.

My comment was not directed as a declaritory statement to all readers. I was just noting that for my personal enjoyment of reading, I do appreciate it.

Being a webmaster also, I know that it is Blue's Job to cater to the majority; however, it is still nice to hear a compliment from an individual every now and then, that's all I was doing.

This is exactly why I was opposed to tobacco legislation. I knew this would come up eventually. The rabid anti-smokers thought it was wonderful, Im curious to see their comments now that its going to affect a more mainstream consumer base.

One of the first, most obvious problems was the regulation of tobacco. If somone wants to smoke, let them. It's their decision to make, not the governments

Wouldn't life be great if complex issues like this were that easy to solve!

Oh well, enough rambling since this is a gaming board, not politcal.

That never stopped us from these types of discussions before why should it now?

This idea seriously disturbs me... it's in complete violation of the concept of free market. People should be allowed to sell whatever they want to sell and market it however the propose. It scares me that everyday we inch closer towards a command economy. One of the first, most obvious problems was the regulation of tobacco. If somone wants to smoke, let them. It's their decision to make, not the governments. Oh well, enough rambling since this is a gaming board, not politcal.
