The GORE Dream Catches On

DreamCatcher Acquires 3D PC Blast-Fest GORE by 4D Rulers is the announcement that this first-person shooter that's been an independent project until now has found a publisher, as they've signed on with DreamCatcher Interactive. The release, which lists Spring 2002 as the game's projected release date, offers the gory GORE story, their unique weapon and stamina systems, and a description of gameplay: "In GORE’s revolutionary gameplay world, players will need more than a quick trigger-finger to demolish their opponents. The game’s 8 to 10 unique player classes allow each player to choose the character with the right weapons, strengths, and abilities for them. Most of GORE’s frighteningly lethal weapons have secondary-fire modes, a feature that gives players over 30 ways to demolish their opponents. But that’s just the beginning. Almost anything you see in GORE can be destroyed: weapons, health and stamina packs, ammo boxes, gas tanks and more. Don’t want a wounded enemy to get a health pack? Shoot it right before he touches it, and watch the pack explode with lethal force. Four game modes (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Tactical warfare) make GORE challenging for any level of player."

"the guns don't even have alt-fire"

The simple things in life are often the best. No decision making on which gun to use and whether the primary fire of 3 small lazer shots or the secondary fire of 1 powerful lazer shot required. Enables you to concentrate more on tactics and gameplay. Eg rocket arena... One gun, all skill.

Tell me... what thought out gameplay was there in Quake 3?
They put a bunch of models on a map, gave them guns, and they blast each other. there's nothing more than that. the guns don't even have alt-fire.
I said it once, I'll say it again... Arena was just a demo for the Q3 engine.

Its going to be hard for them to take on the bargain bin when you have games like serious sam out there. For a small company they put out an great game with a simple story line. Kill anything that moves. Even the graphic engine is pretty impressive for todays standards. Only games like unreal have supported large outdoor environments well. Im curious what kind of budget the gore team is working with to put their game out. Personaly i was unimpressed by the game but other people seem to like it. So more power to them.

#14: Yes, it really does make you run faster... just not in the way you're thinking.

#15: "I doubt their game will get out of the bargain bin, let alone have a few mods for it."

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the whole idea WAS for it to be a bargain bin game, so it's cheaper and more accessible. There are even several user-made mods for the deathmatch demos that are floating around and in use on Gore servers.

Just FYI. it didn't sound like you knew what was going on.

Yes, Xombie, you opinion matters much here.

I doubt their game will get out of the bargain bin, let alone have a few mods for it.

Hmm, 'stanima' eh? Is that sort of a cross between a stim-pack and an enema? Sounds nasty. And I don't even want to consider a 'gas grenade' either

Yep, from what I've read, the singleplayer storyline is about a single player who connected to the internet and played against other ppl online.

It has some decently thought-out gameplay.
Which is more than anyone on earth can say about Quake 3.

I don't see many problems at all with the graphics engine. The fire is a bit silly, but they obviously weren't attempting to make the game realistic looking. It really seems that they're trying to make an FPS that's just fun. Seems like a good idea to me.

Also, I think it's safe to say that the current graphics are not final at all, since they spent most of the development time creating the GORE engine.

I though gore was a lot of fun, and the graphics are good enough to be enjoyable. I like the atmosphere, and especialy like seeing the armor on my enemies, and watching it blast off. The stanima and gas grenades are a very cool feature.

Give the guys a break, making a modern FPS without a massive budget and publisher is HARD. These guys deserve some credit for doing something I bet most of you wished you could do. It's easy to not have to work hard on a project and bash it, its hard to finish a project, even if it ends up mediocre.

The demo screamed 'Bargain Bin Special.'

And yes, I'm aware of the numerous "subtleties" that the game has.

I "get it," in other words.

And is was still totally mediocre.

Now that they have some money, perhaps they'll fix the F/X on the flamethrower.

Who cares? It's a game? You want realism, then if you were to fire a rocket at anything, it explodes! Or do you not want realism, where you can still get the pack after a rocket hits it? You cant have it all? Things like this add are supposed to add to gameplay, thats all? You want total realism, join the army! You want a world where mad shit happens, you play games? FFS!!
