Out of the Blue

In honor of the late Dave Thomas I took my appetite to a drive-through Wendy's last night. It's not often that I manage to swing by Wendy's, as they suffer from fewer locations than their competition. In spite of this, it has always qualified as my favorite of the fast food joints, but even then I found myself truly shocked at the quality of my dinner, which was tasty and shockingly fresh. I don't know if they were putting extra effort in after the death of their founder, if I had freakishly good timing, or if this location was some sort of burger heaven (I almost said nirvana, but that's inappropriate isn't it?), but when is the last time you had a fast-food burger that you had to be careful to keep from burning your mouth? My own answer is easy enough -- last night was the first time ever (even counting that McDLT hot side hot/cool side cool dealie).

Story of the Day: Congressman Strip Searched. Thanks Jamie Fullerton.

Media of the Day: Futurama Framegrabs Anthology of Interest 2. With shots of the portion of this week's episode where life was more like video games. Thanks Ant.
Bonus Media: Bill Gates dressed as Harry Potter. Thanks Russell Raymond. I find this as disturbing as anything we've ever posted.

Indeed, the most obvious reason for Wendy's success is that it cares about quality, at least to the amount a 'fast food joint' could. I hope it stays that way, because it's the only FF place I'm comfortable eating at.

It seems like everyone went to Wendy's yesterday. The whole gang from where I work went and paid our respects. They have this huge poster on the wall with Dave holding a Classic Double... It was nothing special and has been there since the day the store opened, but we all saluted him solemnly with our hot, juicy burgers, nonetheless. It was actually quite touching in a very geniune, non-jokingly-though-we-tried-to-make-it-seem-like-it-was kinda way. When I was ordering my Junior Cheesburger Deluxe, small chili with cheese and onions, and Biggie Mt. Dew, I couldn't think of anything to say that wouldn't be in some way insensitive, so the cashier and I simply went about business as usual in a somewhat awkward and stoic sort of way (I actually wondered if she had heard).

Anyway...

Hmmm. . . . I don't think I'll ever enjoy my favorite Wendy's treat again without thinking of dear departed Dave. Latest news says he passed away from liver cancer, which is a scary thing, but at least it doesn't appear to have been caused by anything off the value menu.

We too went to Wendy's last night. We are love making late night trips there when supper was going to be late or just didnt feel up too cooking. A buck for the juinor bacon cheeseburger just cant be beat. I was saddened to hear of his death. I have heard his life story before and was always so impressed with it and again as I watch a small tribute to this man. His work out side of Wendy's is what really made me so impressed and there are alot of children and people who have come though the adoption sence that probably owe alot to him. Thanks Dave for all you have done for the children.

Because Wendy's doesn't serve gays, and if they do, they want you to know that they don't support it. So Dave loves orphans, but hates gays. Oh, and he's a Pat Robertson supporter too. So go figure, eh?

Wendy's doesn't serve gays

If this is true (which I don't believe), just don't tell the cashier you're gay. Simple.

It is people like you that truly disgust me. You always want to have bleeding-heart stories where the "news media" takes an action and totally twists how it goes. Gays have rights, just like every other person on this planet, but they do not deserve more rights than me just because they are "different".

So don't eat at Wendy's then if you feel uncomfortable giving your money to a dead guy who disliked gays. I don't eat at Wendy's because I prefer not to eat filthy, stinking cows and they are doing fine without my patronage.

If you are gay, ppl are gonna hate you. You should know that by now. As a matter of fact if you are black, jewish, arab, white, fat, blonde haired, a fucking alien, whatever, ppl will hate you. Get over it. Many, many ppl hate me for being ultra intelligent and extremely handsome. I live with it dammit!

Wendy's, and the west-coast-only chain In 'N Out Burger, are the only fast-food burger chains that always make food to order (well, except things like chili).

One yardstick of fast-food places is whether people who used to work there will still eat there. All the people I know who worked at Wendy's will still eat there; nobody who used to work at Jack In The Box will still eat there. From the latter, I've heard stories like "we mixed the taco sauce in the same bucket we used to mop the floor".

that doesn't prove anything. I applaud the good business
sense of companies that follow their demographic. I doubt
Wendys has any issue with serving gays, but they might lose
a good part of their (bigoted) customer base because they
openly supported Ellen. Come on, the show sucked to begin with. Besides, many of my gay friends have anti-gay remarks. They're people, just like everyone else - nothing special.

Because Wendy's doesn't serve gays, and if they do, they want you to know that they don't support it. So Dave loves orphans, but hates gays.

Now you're being silly.

You know what I think is funny... In this world if you don't agree with someone, you can be a bigot & a racist. If you don't think homosexually is okay then you are a bad person. Or so people want you to think. Fuck that, I know my opinions.

I don't agree with homosexuality but the drummer in my band has dated another man before. I don't agree with his views but I still love the guy. To me its just about my moral upbringing... People are funny sometimes...

Anywho--regarding Dave, I'm going out for a frosty and all the Jr Bacon Cheesburgers I can stand! Woohoo!

All those articles talk about is Wendy's pulling an advertisement from the TV show Ellen because as a corporation they would rather avoid controversy. Maybe I'm missing something, but that hardly equates to a company refusing to serve gays. It sounds like a load of propaganda, and a bunch of gay people hopping on the bandwagon against Wendy's just because they can't think for themselves, and need some gay group to tell them what to think and how to act.

Maybe you just forgot to link to the press release where Wendy's mentioned they would no longer be serving gay people. If so, please provide the links, and please provide them from a non-biased source if possible.

Wow, just looks like alot of uppity people who happen to be uppity about their sexual preference seek to uppity to someone for an obscure reason.

Wendy's pulled the ad from the show because it was a "controversial subject", which was apparently against their advertising guidelines. You'd be hard pressed to get anyone to agree with an assertation that Ellen wasn't a controversial show. Sure, the policy is stupid, but it doesn't show that they have anything specifically against homosexuality.

And just because some random person claims that Dave Thomas likes a homophobe, it doesn't make it true.

There are plenty of rights violations in the country. Can't people use more VALID examples, rather than knocking on a dead guy because they disagree with his company's advertising standards?

Blue, I believe your experience at Wendy's isn't just a lone one. All of the Wendy's in the area I live serve the same way, whether they're extremely busy, or nobody's around. I've come to the conclusion that it must be some sort of company-wide policy to have their cooks make the burgers correctly or something, but I sure do like it
