I've been folowing this thread for the last day or so and I thought now might be the perfect opportunity for me to put in my two cents. I downloaded the demo and I love it. I do appreciate blue's giving in to the over riding desire of the majjority of us gamers and mirroring the darn thing. what i do find puzzling is that I feel a little funny about having the download. I do feel a that it is ,technically ,stealing-- but before you guys ( and gals) get out the axle grease, let me say that we are living in the midst of a major shift in the operating paradigm in reguards to intellectual property rights, not so much in their application, but in the enforcement of said rights. All this to say that If a thing can be rendered into a form that makes it transferrable on an electronic network, How can you keep that transfer from happening ? You can't. Its stealing, under a definition that no longer necessarily has applicability, and that undoudtedly no longer has enforceability.
I'm reminded of the state of copyright laws in the early part of the twentieth century( especially the music biz-- the only people making the big money were the publishers)where the creators of the product got a pittance, but everybody had access(people got together and played other peoples songs without paying royalties). This didn't change until entities like bmi and ascap came into being.
Until the software industry-- no make that content creators, cause the big boys always get theirs --comes up with some kind of mechanism for making sure that they recieve their due, we'll continue in this kind of limbo.
Man, if the tree is in your yard, even if your neighbor planted it, how do you keep from eating the fruit?
