Unreal II Preview

There's an Unreal 2 Preview on Computer and Video Games based on a visit to the offices of Legend Entertainment to check out progress on the upcoming FPS sequel. Amidst their complaints about traveling, the article offers first-hand impressions of the game, describing the experience of playing Unreal II comparable to the first time out with Half-Life, which left them "overwhelmed by just how much better it was than every other FPS out there." The article includes several quotes from Legend's Mike Verdu, one of which is included in the excerpt below that sums up their visit, and offers good news for those who bought video cards with T&L support a couple of years ago:
Just how well will Unreal II stand up against the competition? "I think it will stand up very well," says Mike, confidently. "Our game will look great because it is truly next generation – in all likelihood, Unreal II will be one of the first games on the market that truly takes advantage of next-generation hardware on a PC using hardware transform and lighting – or hardware T&L – on cards like the GeForce 2. I am also confident the gameplay will be great. The new game design innovations and the story for Unreal II add to a solid foundation created by UT and the original Unreal." Hard to argue with that really.

The monster hits in PC gaming can sell over a million copies, but these are pretty rare. The Diablo games, The Sims, Myst, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Half-Life, the Quake and Unreal series have all sold over a million copies, but these are the exceptions. Most PC games actually sell pretty poorly. If you can move over 100,000 copies, you've got a hit. 250,000 would be a very solid number.

So I guess the answer is that while companies like Valve would probably like to sell a lot more, they could tailor their games to that 250k and still turn a decent profit (you also have to extrapolate -- how many people bought HL but didn't answer the survey and have similar specs?)
