More on Quake II Source Code

A post by id Software's John Carmack on Slashdot follows up on last night's release of the Quake II source code (story) with word of a few additional releases that can be expected soon. Here is the scoop:
Thanks for the kind comments, it helps me brace a bit for some of the really vile hate mail that is already starting to come in from the people worried about cheating.

Bill Heineman is preparing the mac source code for Q2 for a release.

We will see about getting the 3.21 changes we missed into an updated release.

I am also happy to say that another old game's code will be released under the GPL soon. We can always hope that it becomes a trend...

John Carmack
Update: In related news, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead updated his .plan with a bit of information on the fees for private Quake II engine licensing, if a project based on the now public source code is not interested in releasing its own source code, as is required under the terms of the GNU GPL.

God I hate these people with nothing to do but bitch about how releasing the code will create more cheaters. For one, 99% of the cheating llamas will have moved on to CS, now it's mostly just the dedicated hardcore still playing Q2. Besides that, the only way to avoid cheating anyway is to play on a LAN.

Hmm, this other old game's code release - I bet it's from either Xatrix or Raven. No, I HOPE it is.

You must be a cheater yourself, rubbing your hands at the slew of new TOTALLY undetectable cheats that will arrive thanks to the usual ID stupidity.

Normal cheats need hacks, hacks are detectable and somewhat preventable, cheats based on the source code which is gladly handed over by Mr Carmack will be completely unstoppable, untraceable and undetectable. It killed QW, it will kill Q2 (whats left of it) as well. Lucky then that I never bothered with Q3.

I wish people would get their heads out of their arses and THINK for a change.

Carmack releases his code to BENEFIT all of us, and the community as a whole. Yes, it may in some instances open some additional possibilities for people to cheat (more, which they already manage to do). But with the code available, the opposite is also true - there will be more power behind coding to PREVENT cheating, duh. Now, on the other hand:

1. code sharing is always beneficial, as people learn from each other. This means, you morons, that your future-to-be favorite games may just have the benefit of some of the expertise JC can contribute as do/do nots, lessons learned from experience, and overall knowledge base.

2. code sharing saves time. So, your future-to-be favorite games will get to your PC faster.

3. JC's releases at once do some playing field levelling, and as a result, increase competition. Everyone can learn from each other, and if suddenly everyone knows how to do what JC does, then not only does the competition among others increases, but JC himself has to try that much harder to smoke everyone else.

Please, open your damned minds and see the big picture, not just your dumbass Q2 server that no one plays on anymore anyway.

Duh.

And while I am at it, Carmacks dad says:

Only 8 days 'til Christmas! While the sales from last week are over, you last
minute shoppers can still get RTCW at a very affordable $34.99 from Circuit
City, courtesy of their 12/16 circular ad.

$34.99 should have been the normal price for that basic peice of crap.

#5 Dude, shut your ass up. Carmack is great, you can't argue otherwise. He obviously knows he good, and what you can't seem to understand is that, he knows he good, he has the knowledge to back it up, and the truth is, he probably the best programmer to ever walk the earth. Besides, how the hell by your own reasoning could Carmack be announcing his brilliance by releasing source code.

It's no wonder John Carmack doesn't post here...

That argument is flawed, since he posts on Slashdot.

Exactly, and by only posting at Slashdot, it shows he thinks he is too good to post anywhere else.

He thinks it makes him look more intelligent.

Um, you been to the store lately? There isnt anything else to buy. If there was a better selection of products you can bet your butt that RTCW would'nt even be close to making that list. It's Kingpin with a WW2 theme.

Duh. It's like Martha Stewart releasing one of her famous recipies. It's not because she wants to see the food industry in a better place. She wants to share her brilliance and have it recognized by those who arent so brilliant.

Yes, I completely agree with you. JC should spend all day posting on bulletin boards, instead of working on Doom3. Maybe then he would be only half as great as Derek Smart is.

I've had quite a lot of fun playing their last "technology demo". Apart from Doom2, I think it has the best FFA deathmatch gameplay.
