More on Quake II Source Code

A post by id Software's John Carmack on Slashdot follows up on last night's release of the Quake II source code (story) with word of a few additional releases that can be expected soon. Here is the scoop:
Thanks for the kind comments, it helps me brace a bit for some of the really vile hate mail that is already starting to come in from the people worried about cheating.

Bill Heineman is preparing the mac source code for Q2 for a release.

We will see about getting the 3.21 changes we missed into an updated release.

I am also happy to say that another old game's code will be released under the GPL soon. We can always hope that it becomes a trend...

John Carmack
Update: In related news, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead updated his .plan with a bit of information on the fees for private Quake II engine licensing, if a project based on the now public source code is not interested in releasing its own source code, as is required under the terms of the GNU GPL.

Really, I do enjoy this little christmas presents that JC give us. I'm not a coder, nor will I ever likely write a program that is useful.. But everyone benefits from the code releases.

You snot nosed punks need to realize.. you do NOT need source code for cheats, if you disagree then I have 3 letters for you: OGC, `nough said. If you have nothing better to do than make cheats for a 4yr old game, then you suck.

There are alot of possibilities for the source. Personally I would be interested to see if it would run at a decent speed on a recent pocketpc (any of them with the 206mhz cpu in them.. like the IPAQ's)
What about NPRQuake(2?).. the port with the funky blueprint/sketch display modes..
AND of course, the engine improvements.. There's already a tutorial out for loading targa files in the place of textures in a .wal ... and one to allow for true shadows using a stencil buffer, rather than the patchy POS shadows included in the game..
Maybe someone can figure out softGL colored lighting, for ppl w/o an opengl accel (laptops maybe?).. How about an MP3 player, or built-in voice chat? Text balloons with the chat text IN them, Quake3/Half-Life models/maps? What if someone ported QuakeC over to Quake2?

Open your fucking mind and let it explore!
As for the other old game that's being sourced.. Could it be SiN? It's a Q2 game, but with some different stuff, nothing big though... Hrm?

(BTW JC, if you are reading these forums.. Thanks for the early Xmas present!)
Now I'm off to read some code..
