Hrmm, I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the vehemence pro and con directed at CRS. What is it about this game that drives people to extremes?

Like many others, I bought the thing a week after release (no, I did not camp out), and enjoyed (along with suffered through...) the next 4 months of play testing before pay-for-play began.

I must confess, there were elements of the game I enjoyed immensely, whereas other things were extremely frustrating. All in all, I enjoyed the game quite a bit, although did not become fanatical about it. I subscribed for an additional month, and have not been playing since before v1.50 was released. I was thinking of going back, and I may well.

Too all you folks who felt burned about purchasing WW2Online.... get over it! Hell, I paid a lot more for a CERTAIN game (Q3 Arena, ahem...) that I felt to be a major disappointment, and which has basically gathered dust since the day I bought it. So what did I do... I moved on!

I still play tons of Quake 2 CTF AND enjoyed the unique gameplay of WW2Online... so what does that make me? I guess some kind of freak.

WW2Online may not have been your cup of tea, or you may have had a crappy 56k connection, or the box art didn't match your expectations, etc., etc.... SO WHAT! The way I see it, you got 4 months of "free" play-testing.

The one thing I've really admired about the Rats is that they seem determined not to dumb down the game at any cost. They have a certain vision, and they've been trying to stick to it. Yeah, its far from perfect, but what they hell is?

Now regarding the Chapter II announcement, that was news to me. Upon further reading, although they have not made an official announcement of sorts, this issue has been addressed in the WW2Online gameplay forums. Here is something from Killer I just read.

http://www5.playnet.com/bv/wwiiol/dg_message.jsp?group_id=8802&parent_id=5489 (about 9 posts down)

There I go getting misquoted again. I didn't say it was no big deal, I said it's not that big of a deal, in response to "playnet is out of business?"

There's a bit of a difference there.

wwiiol will survive as long as 1000 new players are signing up per month like they are now, and people still have fun playing it.

Killer
Da head Rat

I for one hope the game survives. Worse comes to worse, if Playnet/CRS were to go down in flames, at least the WW2Online code is already done and tested (up to v1.50), so hopefully it would re-emerge somewhere else at some point.

Um... guys? I hate to be the bringer of knowledge (since it's a pity it's so void in here), but they're obviously NOT going under. They're filing for CHAPTER 11 bankruptcy PROTECTION.
Apparently no one in here is very familiar with bankruptcy law. Chapter 11 is for COMPANY REORGANIZATION. It is simply so a company does NOT go under while they are reorganizing.

I've never played the game, but everyone who seems to play it recently heralds it. Everyone criticizing it seems to be a past user that's still sore about the release. After reading the article in PC Gamer, I'm pretty convinced to try it once the trial copy comes out.

If that guy who posted at the VE3D is who he says he is, if it was planned network maintenance you'd think you'd tell the game staff. Maybe this WILL turn out to be one big nasty coincidence that a lot of people blew out of proportion. But if PlayNet were my company, and major gaming news sites were reporting my company's demise, for fear of the damage it would certainly do to whatever prospective sells I could be earning I would IMMEDIATELY come out and squash these rumors. PlayNet's silence on the matter so far is hardly reassuring.

They posted a notice last week that said they would be doing maintenance on Dec. 24th and that the sight would be down for awhile. It didn't happen on on the 24th, guess they were a few days late. As for no link to get in the game... there is one. At least there is for me. Bankrupcy does not mean that Playnet is closing down. All it means is they are having some problems meeting creditors demands. Companies (and people) file for bankrupcy all the time and are better off for doing so. Besides, Playnet and CRS are not the same company. Playnet only hosts the servers.

#28, YOU are an idiot.

The game IS going under, maybe not today, but soon, watch.

I dont know where you get off with your gaming superiority complex, but it is a completely invalid point. I play Quake, I also play a helluva lot of other games too, many requiring MUCH more thought than that boring hunk of crap WW2OL. I play FPS, I play RTS, I play RPG, I play anything and everything....to think that you are better becuase you play WW2OL and dont play Quake or CS makes you a complete moron. The funny thing is that I notice your sentiments are shared among many WW2OL moron fanboys....get off it, you are just stupid. Scisors, Paper, Rock requires more thought than WW2OL. The toughest thing about WW2OL is making it work correctly at a decent frame rate on your machine. Try to remember something about games, they are supposed to be FUN. Quake is fun. CS is fun (though not my bag). WW2OL is BORING and runs like crap.

The concept was to couple a sophisticated flight-sim engine and a sophisticated terrain engine and use it to drive tanks, infantry and boats too. It was way too ambitious for the amount of money they had, and so they released the game without a ton of the features advertised. I can understand why people are angry. At the same time, if you want a game of this type at all, WW2OL is your best hope of getting one (and don't tell me that OFP or MOH: AA are similar, since they don't have the huge arena and huge numbers of players participating). No publisher is going to commit big bucks to a sim-oriented project nowadays, so the shoestring approach CRS took was the only way to get it done. If you want them to fail, it means you only want to see games just like the ones that are already out.

P.S. 400 players peak is B.S. At peak times they regularly get 1200+ players. They don't give player numbers, just percentage of capacity, but if you use your head you can determine the capacity from the fractional part of the percentage and determine the number of players from the capacity.

That's funny, judging from the official forums all that seems to play ARE the CS/Quake kiddies. Of course, judging from your post that's probably where you came from. And I suggest you follow that link to Icrontic if you think Playnet is safe.

Fact:Playnet has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Fact:Playnet owns CRS.

Maybe not dead, but certainly on it's deathbed. The best you can hope for now is that someone buys out CRS.

The game isnt going under you dolts. They are doing network maintenance. And there is a link to the game server.

This game rocks and kicks any other MMPFPS game out there.

Of course the point and click kiddies from CS and Quake group cant even comprehend the depth of this multiplayer game. So I hope they stay away, because when it comes to that crowd, they hate using thier brains.

The same exact message is posted at www.playnet.com, except no link to get into the game. This is hilarious. And there was absolutely no posting on any WWIIOL news page about any maintenance. I hope the fanboys enjoyed throwing their money into a furnace

Hmmm....this looks pretty reliable IMO. IF you are a creditor then you will get notice if something like this happens. Also, I can't get to the WW2OL forums to see what all the fanboys are saying now....damn, I'd love to see their faces....Guess they will all be calling the creditors 'trolls'!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I knew it! All those suckers that paid for a 6 month subscription! I knew they were morons!

ROFL! LMAO @ fanboys, Playnet, and the liars at CRS!

:-)

Let this be a lesson to other game dev houses, release crap and get burnt BAD.

As reported on Icrontic, Playnet files for Chapter 11:

Note, Icrontic is not always 100% reliable, but after the disaster that was the WWIIOL launch I could believe this.

#21 is right onthe money.

CRS/StratFirst flat out lied through their teeth. I too will never ever buy another product from either company, and I too am not a 15 year old troll....I have been playing games since the original PONG. I am just not into getting screwed and lied to so that someone an steal my money. To call someone a troll because they are able to realize the facts in this case shows YOUR immaturity and ignorance. If you like getting screwed, keep supporting the companies that lie with your money, but dont expect me to support them with mine.

The thing that really makes me laugh is that I remember on the forums early on when people were having problems, everyone would just say "no one is forcing you to play the game, so just do us a favor and leave". Now thosse same idiots realize that they were discouraging people from joining the player base for this doomed piece of crap game.

The forums on the WWII site are edited by the mods. So if there is a post put up there they don't like they take it off to try and stop the bad press from getting around, so you are only going to get what they want you to read not a a reliable place for info. I too was burnt by this company and I will never again give them another chance to do it again. Don't waste your money wait till a company comes out that can do it righ and you will not only have a good game but a nice player base to go along with it.

Those forums were enough to convince me NOT to buy the game. Judging by the posts in there, it seems the average age of the players playing seems to be about 12. The game sounds good enough, but if everyone who's playing seems to be such a prick, it's not worth it.

Love how if you don't agree with some people you must be a 15 year old troll. I am definitely far from that, just a defrauded and misled consumer.

Fact: The game that was put out was initially crap
Fact: The WWII Online team didn't live up to their promises on the box
Fact: The WWII Online team didn't deliver what they promised was coming in early patches i.e. the Panzer II showed up (months after promised)
Fact: The WWII Online team required monthly payment before the game was improved to an adequate state i.e. more than Quake in tanks

Am I going to pay to continue to beta test the game? Is the Naval section really running well, or is it just some crap looking boat so that they can claim they added naval (hmm no subs or destroyers?)

This game is not good enough to give my hard earned cash to this publisher or developer. I'm not looking for Quake (acutally I don't like Quake much), and was looking for exactly what was promised. It was maybe too ambitious for this developer/publisher, which is a shame.

I'll continue to spread the word and will never buy any game from Cornered Rat or Strategy First. They did me (and a lot of other people) without lube and deserve all the grief they get.

I'll toast the day when Cornered Rat/Strategy First go out of business.

1.5 Makes a great game better.

There will be out a trial version soon, so YOU can try it without listening to the 15 year old Trolls who don't play this game anymore because MOMMIE won't pay $10 a month.

This Game is for grownups, played by MOSTLY mature Non-aim-bot, must have ROCKET LAUNCHER Quakers.

Visit MY Sqaud's Web page at WWW.SGHQ.COM and see some IN GAME videos and see what YOU THINK.
