Codename: Outbreak Preview

HomeLan Fed's Codename: Outbreak Preview offers a look ahead at Codename: Outbreak, the upcoming first-person shooter from GSC Gameworld that was known as Venom through much of its development. The preview is based on the full version of the game that's already available in Europe that's due in the U.S. over the next couple of days. The article describes the game's story, alluding to its similarities to Heinlein's The Puppet Masters; describes the mix between tactics and out-and-out action; your AI teammate; the strengths of the game's Vital Engine ZL; multiplayer modes; what's expected to be different in the US release; and more.

You probably have a point there...that playing this type of game online with "live" sidekicks is probably more fun than playing with the computer generated AI. Which would allow for more realistic gameplay. To me, it seems the computer AI "cheats". It can do completely unrealistic things, as I mentioned earlier. But, the graphics are very impressive. And the affects are pretty good too. Of course, given the sad fact, I cannot get broadband, or DSL in my "frontier" part of the country (Mass.), playing online is not really an option for me anymore. Not much fun trying to compete against players with very low ping (20ms) compared to my snail's pace (400-600ms or more). So, the single player experience is more important to me than the online experience. But, I can see where this would be a fun game to play during a LAN party. Although, CS seems to have that area pretty much sewed up.

Hmm, I played the demo and the UK version, and had no trouble with the game at all. Then again, tatctical shooters are 'my thing'.. Ya have to be in the right mind-set to play the game. It's also a lot of fun with your friends in co-op, which makes up for your AI teammates' shortcomings.

Couldn't agree more with first post. It is often impossible to establish where the enemy is let alone take a shot at them. The first demo impressed me enough to put this on my 'wanted list' but now I think I will put that money towards some of the hopefully better FPS's being released over Xmas. I even think Red Faction is a better game (based on demo) which is saying something!

I played the original demo (when it was still Venom) with either one or two friends alongside and no AI allies and really enjoyed it. It is not only easier to play co-op, it's more realistic and fun, as you can employ some real tactics, instead of just praying that your sidekick doesn't get stuck walking into a tree or something.

My only real beef was the long haul back to join the other players if you got killed. Some of the maps are huge and the spawn points are near the beginning, so it could literally take a minute or more to ctach up to your friends. Then again, it makes you careful.

I have been playing the demo for a week or so. Generally, I am a FPS player. Not much into RTS, or RPGs. Not sure what to make of this hybrid of the FPS genre yet. I like the idea, but...not having that much time to devote to playing games..this type of game gets old quick. Too damn hard. Getting shot at from, who knows where? Trying to be stealthy while the computer knows exactly where you are and will send platoons of AI to get you and your sidekick (who is none to bright either and gets killed quickly, leaving you to fight the other battalions of AI that can see you through trees and bushes) just isn't my idea of fun. I know, I know...many of you love these, so-called "adventure/strategy/RPG/FPS......yadda, yadda, yadda" games. Not me...I wish the game developers would decide on a genre....and stick with it.
