Out of the Blue

Thanks Brian for sending along a link to the Internet Archive WayBack Machine, which offers occasional snapshots of archived versions of websites, in this case, ours. This is a neat chance to see a bit of the evolution of the design and all here, as it features samples of the site going back to the end of 1996. This got me a bit curious about the technology behind such an amazing endeavor, and it turned out to be even more amazing than I would have imagined, Here's a bit from their FAQ:
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine contains over 100 terabytes of data and is currently growing at a rate of 12 terabytes per month. The archive contains multiple copies of the entire publicly available web. This eclipses the amount of data contained in the world's largest libraries, including the Library of Congress.

Link of the Day: Tamponhenge. Thanks EvilToast.
Story of the Day: Staying Calm Inside the Anthrax Triangle. Thanks Frottage.
Bonus Story: 'Anthrax Street' Renamed. Thanks theAntiELVIS. On a related note. Apparently they thought it was an appetizing name before recent events.
Auction of the Day: Britney Spears Matted Star Photo. Time to consider electrolysis. Thanks Chris Johnson.
Media of the Day: This Associated Press Photo. Thanks Bodi Freeman. And you thought your piercing was cool.
Wild Science: Fossil of Monster Crocodile Found. Thanks Ted Stanulis and [MP] Wolverine [MP].

Dude, seriously, you never figured out the magic number was a page counter?

"Served over xx million people since whenever" where xx = all but the last 6 digits of the "magic" number.

Blues Quake Rag back in July of 1996...
this is as far back as the databse seems to go as the page lacks a "Older News" link. If it doesnt work, try refreshing a few times, it is there. Blue should have no problem completing his archive now

"Quake shareware 1.01 is up on id's ftp site."

Hey Blue,

This walk down archive lane sparked a question I keep forgetting to ask. Did you ever reveal the purpose of the "magic" number that used to appear way down at the bottom of each page? If so, I must have missed it. Would you kindly repeat the answer? Thanks!

Blue

You do realise this is a FULL copy of your site as at time of capture. I don't know if the archive function is working but pressing ealier news at the bottom the page lets you go back even further. Found the announcement that Quakeworld had been released (and the master server subsequently collapsed as 4000 people trieds to use it). I went back to before Thanksgiving 1996 before I started to get problems with accessing the site, the volume of users was too high..etc.
