Condition Zero Interview [Oct 17, 2001, 11:28 pm ET] – Share – Viewing Comments
There is a new Randy Pitchford interview on Gamehelper, cornering the Gearbox Software front-man about Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, their upcoming single-player variant on the wildly popular team-based shooter. Randy talks about their plans (as indefinite as they currently are) for the game's release, the transfer of the project from Rogue Entertainment, some of the game's features like the new weapons, single-player missions, bot AI, and lots more. Here is a bit about how Condition Zero will mix-n-match with other versions of Counter-Strike:
Gamehelper: What’s the plan for cutting down on ‘Upgrade Confusion’ post Condition Zero? Will there be future patches for CZ separate from Counter-Strike or will we see community wide upgrades?
Randy Pitchford: I would expect a major patch for Counter-Strike when Condition Zero is launched to make them fully compatible with each other. Beyond that, there are likely to be continual upgrades and improvements to the on-line game.
GH: Will the patch for CS be required, or will it be an optional component?
RP: Condition Zero will have everything needed to play on or off line in the box. When Condition Zero is released and installed, there should be no need to worry about maintaining any other installations of the game.
GH: If someone has never owned CS, will they be able to play on CS servers with just the install of CZ?
RP: Yes. This will be the preferred way to play CS on-line after Condition Zero is released because CZ will include some technology enhancements and content upgrades beyond the current level of CS.

This is just going to be plain bad. I'll bet they will provide better support for cheating in CZ than they ever will with online play.
By the way, I hope you lot know that this will be horrible single-player maps with you against terrorists with hostage AI.

Heh, the way I understood it, this is just basically a one time (Hopefully?) "upgrade" for counterstrike that everyone will wind up having to buy. After this, it's unlikely that they will continue to release patches for Counterstrike. Not even counting the cheaters, Sierra killed counterstrike as a mod and is trying to make it into a commercial game for them.
In other words, once this is released, counterstrike will not be supported, only condition zero will be.
Hopefully CZ has some built in cheat protections, it's amazing what some of those damn cheaters can do.

I doubt you'll get the single player part for free, it's more going to be like you can download a 4gb patch so all of the CS mod players can play with the CSCZ players.
Errr, the way he phrases things is hard to understand. You can download CZ for free if you own Half-Life, and it comes in a box as well, just like normal CS is what I understand. Am I wrong here?

Possibly. Hopefully they'll just have specific maps allowing this.

OK. So, thinking it would be nice to offer Gooseman some kind of thanks for the countless hours I played his game by buying the CS box set WHEN I DIDN'T HAVE TO, they're now saying "Buy CZ, or you miss out on a load of new stuff." For crying out loud, just give us a god damned TRUE Half Life sequel already. We're already sorted for a true CS sequel, Barking Dog who helped with some CS betas are doing that and actually have new, sensible gameplay ideas, a decent (read: huge) amount of weapons and a load of good looking content (levels, models etc.)

I can only hope that this doesn't mean we'll be seeing terrorists planting land mines and other silliness that's been announced for the single player Condition Zero in standard multiplayer CS.

The whole CS thing has grown very stale. The people I know who have been playing CounterStrike from the beginning are now finding that so many children are abusing the game online with stupid, nihilism, that a single player version is now necessary. Online play is way over-rated in this day and age of mean-spirited, stupid, immature dumb-asses jumping online and ruining the gaming experience for everyone else. Check out 3Demons forums on this issue to see what I mean.
Yeah! When is someone gonna make multiplayer Bitch-Fight Barbie so Spazer (whom can't spell worth a crap, but whaddya expect from a l337 haX0r 13 year old dUd3) and I can duke it out with some "Dress Up Slapmatch"? That game would totally r0x0r my s0x0rs... much more than any top rated and played game ever could.
