Wolfenstein Preview

GameSpy.com Previews Return to Castle Wolfenstein with a look ahead at the Quake III engine Wolfenstein 3-D follow-up in the works at Gray Matter Interactive (and Nerve Software for the multiplayer component). The preview is based on some hand-on play at a recent Activision press event where they got to check out some new levels and things like cut-scenes that were not on hand for the showings of the game at this year's QuakeCon. The article offers impressions of the single-player stuff on display, as well as some newer aspects of multiplayer play that are not evident in the multiplayer test, going into a bit on what will be changed in the final version of the game based on feedback from the test.

Do you know anything about this game other than
"newly announced Interplay WWII title which allegedly will be out before Xmas 01 "??? I pretty much love any WWII title there is. I've never tried WW2 Online, but I heard it's a little buggy right now. I'm sure eventually it will be great, but yah know.

Does anyone have any idea when we might get a RTCW single player demo? How about Medal of Honor demo? Maybe somebody will have so insight on these details.

Well, anon, in that case, I guess it was just my horrid experiences I had with trackballs.

This game is gonna be great. I have faith in the developers that it will be out before Christmas. I'm just mad that MOH has been pushed back 'til February. Until I get my hands on RTCW and MOH, I'll be playing Day of Defeat. God Bless that game...

Been having lots of "Connection Interrupted" on certain servers after playing for a few hours - on a cable modem with lots of bandwidth availible - traffic seems to just stop coming to me from the server.

Actually I have used a trackball for 3yrs for FPS games. I am competitive in all games I play so I dont really think a trackball is inferior to the genres needs. Its as accurate as a mouse, and u dont need to move it to reposition your imput surface. It is, however, a little harder to get the hang of because u must rotate the ball all the time while transversing the axis in the 4 basic directions. If u can get the hang of this (involves 2 fingers and a thumb) its as efficient as an optical mouse. U need ahigh end one however, a logitech MarbleFX or a Microsoft Intellipoint Explorer. Both are laser, 3 imput points, no moving parts in the optical operation. IM using the MS one now, has 4 buttons and a wheel, so its nice to have 2-3 exra features in the right hand. I would give a trackball 6weeks though to become adept.

As for Wolfenstien, looks like its gonna be a great game. Im playing a lot of the test, using the Venom pretty much all the time. Wind ups and cooling windows are the key to that gun. Learning where the sweet spot is too (10-25ft) is the key to holding your ground. any farther it spreads like a bitch, any closer, your manuverability is to slow not to get circle strafed. Again, I aim for center mass and not the head, because inside of 20ft the spread seems to work to your advantage at center mass. More rounds hit. I dont think people use grenades effectively enough either. Any old q2 player knows how deadly the right grenade is.....timing the pin, tragectory, suprise, and containment.

On to another q3 engine game, that I would love to hear some comments about from all u diehards.... SOF II. I myself loved SOF but was dissapointed by the Multi. All the guns were hitscan too, which makes for bad online balance. This time around the game looks to be loaded with weapons. AK 74 (a fine weapon), M4/m203, several pistols and SMG's, an assault shotgun, pump shotguns, a 6 shot grenade launcher (probably the south african 30mm), and the RPG 7 just to name a few. With proper Multi LVL design, it looks to be some fun online. If they have some team mods like WOLFIE, I could imagine a squad armed with ak74's, an rpg 7 and a pair of 6 shot GLs storming a squad with m4/m203's some smgs, a LAW, and an M249. I think with ID giving q4 to Raven, they must have been impressed with what SOF II is shaping up to. Raven puts out a lot of games, and even their so-so's (like thier star treks of late) get good reviews for quality. So we will just wait and see.
Any Opinions much appreciated...

Probably wrong in my presumption %),

1. Reply to (or start a new) post and scroll down; all the special codes and emoticons are listed.

2. That really depends on a number of things. You're looking at design, money, management, technical issues, organization, et cetera.

3. Current "unofficial" estimates place it on December 4th. It's all about the Christmas rush; should it run into more problems, expect it to become yet another early(ish) 02 release.

4. Don't forget to be a total geek and pre-order the limited edition tin version.

How do you change the color of the fonts? Also why do some of the games have more time than the others! Last but not least, when is the full version coming out?

Oh, a trackball and a joystick, too. Hmm, trackball sucks...

They are less efficient at fast FPS games than almost anything. Going forward with the joystick? Haha, I laugh. I use a mouse button, silly. That's definitely most comfortable than making your whole hand put pressure on something such as a joystick.

Hey, kid, if you're using a damn trackball then you are not using a joystick. Wow, common sense, pal.

Tell me, what joystick would make you move your hand to the keyboard, aynways? Hmm, none. I did not point that one out, like you had accused me of. I stated, though, and will state it again, that the mentality for the use of a joystick is quite different than the use of a keyboard. I have all teh keys I would ever need on a keyboard. All one-hundred of 'em. I use at least 8 keys on the keyboad to use almsot all functionality in a modern game. Tell me where those eight buttons on the joystick might be without having to use a shift button on the 'stick. I have a Sidewinde Pro, and I know that it is the best tool for racing games.

Yeah, what you got to say now?

..and see that I have no need to move 'my whole other hand'...

I strafe and go forwards and back with the stick, and aim and look with the trackball, which is RIGHT THERE.

Additionally, any and all key binds I need are on one of the FOURTEEN programmable buttons that are also RIGHT THERE.

You see, I have no need at all to even reach to the keyboard.

Speak not of what you don't understand, son.

exactly the mentality I mention. I have modded my own stick (a pantherxl) and it has optical technology, so that's really 'inefficient'. Silly.

Don't shout from the rooftops what you obviously don't understand. And don't make a fool of yourself for assuming that you know all there is to know about joysticks in FPS.

I routinely own with the stick, and feel it is far superior to the k/m.

While a joystick might be more "gunlike." They are FAR less efficient at FPS - period. No top player would ever use one? Besides, even though they might seem more fun, whats fun about NOT being able to kill monsters as fast or efficently?

Joysticks are for flightsims and sissy console games.

Where in all of God's green Earth does joysticks fall into this discussion?

Perhaps, though, if you weren't critisizing others' use of the keyboard calling most a newbie by heart, maybe I wouldn't bad mouth you and tell you to get lost (got to keep it somewhat appropriate). I grew up on consoles too, kid. Don't lecture me about how joysticks are for real gamers.

Tell me how you intend to strafe quickly by moving your whole other hand? I would rather use my two fingers, instead of moving the whole joystick side to side or maybe fuckin' holding a button which takes up another key or button on your bulky controller. I do not intend to make it a challenge to try and press the right buttons in the heat of battle. I do intend, however, to use my skills to the fullest extent whenever needed.

Silly rabbit, unless there's a trackball involved there somewhere (for aiming, while the joystick controls running direction), the joystick is useless

..and DON'T say, unless you are a lamer, that 'joysticks are stupid in FPS', because they are NOT; you just haven't considered their use and were born and weaned on the keyboard/mouse input.

It DOES work, and it works WELL.

Sadly, those of use who DO use them are finding that games are increasingly not supporting joysticks, and this is sad.

Most, if not all, early games (atari 2600/5200) had the stick as the ONLY choice, and it is my belief that the feel of a joystick (i.e., a gun handle with triggers and buttons in the appropriate and expected places) functions ergonomically and otherwise in a far superior fashion than does some plastic coaster thingy and a keyboard, which, as we all know, were made for word processing and browsing, not GAMING. ESPECIALLY in a shooter.

*steps down off soapbox*

Hmm, interesting. Of course, I realize after I posted all that that inquiring into the story details of an id-based game might betray an extreme amount of boredom. It's true, it's true...it got so bad the other day that I reinstalled Star Wars: Rebellion. It was worse than I remembered.
