Out of the Blue

One of those stories of the day that must be posted just to stem the flood of mail about it in our inbox. It seems De Twentsche Courant Tubantia (thanks EvilToast) seems to be the original source of follow-ups like Bin Laden's Felt-Skinned Henchman (thanks Charles Crail) and Osama Has a New Friend (thanks Agrajag). This is actually a follow-up, as it all seems to stem from an image on the Bert is Evil website, a one-time link of the day. Thanks to all the rest of you who also sent along one of these links (you can stop now).

Update: I should also mention that tonight is Dine Out for America Night. Thanks Christopher Bruce.

Link of the Day: Discover HIP HOP. Thanks dkfn.
Story of the Day: Fu fighters await World Cup hooligans. Thanks Tickenest. Great headline.
Follow-up: Drunkgamers.com's Interview with Steve Ballmer. Wooo!

And then I just saw this:

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/politics/whispers/whisphome.htm

"Labor unions and independent groups aligned with the antiwar effort sparked by President Bush's retaliation campaign against Osama bin Laden will come under attack this week in the House as lawmakers seek to cut off their federal grants. GOP sources tell Whispers that an amendment to block grants to the groups will be offered to the appropriation bill for the Labor and Health and Human Services departments up for consideration as early as Thursday. A new analysis of federal grants to groups involved in the antiwar effort identifies unions including the United Auto Workers, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and the Service Employees International Union. The Heritage Foundation analysis from census documents also found grants to independent groups that have blasted Bush's war. "Should tax dollars be going to groups that protest the war? I don't think so," says an architect of the plan to end the grants."

Absolutely incredible...immediately reminded me of this:

http://www.theonion.com/onion3736/freedoms_curtailed.html

""Now is not the time for such divisive, destructive things as dialogue and debate," McCain said. "Now is not the time for, 'My opinion is just as valid as yours,' and 'What are my country's leaders doing and why?' and 'I have a question, Mr. President.' Now is the time for one thing and one thing only: The defense of the American democratic ideal. Any and all who disagree with this directive, or who have different ideas about how it should be accomplished, should learn to shut their mouths.""
