Unreal II Interview

Unreal Sector interviews Simon Callaghan of Infogrames public relations. The conversation mostly focuses on Simon's work in PR, though it does touch on Unreal II a couple of times, at one point confirming the game is still on track for release in Summer 2002, and at another point, offering a modest assessment of how it's turning out by comparing it to another couple of yet-to-be-released games: "Simply awesome. Forget Doom 3 and Quake 4, this will be the new benchmark for first-person shooters."

True, and making a judgement about a game that isnt out or even had any real limelight screenshot wise, WOULD be foolish. But you can trust me when I say personally, I know how much doom3 will own, I have inside information, and graphically, [this isn't exactly earthshattering news], it WILL set the new standard. It IS insanely awesome looking. There will be no debates in that department, trust me. The debates will be from the usual whiners about how they can't run the game properly on their voodoo2, in the year 2003.

A good game can withstand being "trashed", but no game (good or bad) deserves being "cracked and distributed." Piracy is not a legitimate form of protest because it hurts the whole industry, the good guys and the bad guys.

I don't really care about the tired, stupid, old argument about which games are better: Unreal or Quake? Quake or Unreal? The fact is: both raised the bar a notch or two in the FPS genre. Which is my favorite gaming genre. I'll try almost any FPS that gets decent reviews on a site like Blue's News, etc. I have been pc-gaming since the days of Wolfenstein3D. I'm an addict. No other genre does it for me like the FPS does. So, for me.....it's all good. The more the merrier I say. Bring em all on....Q4, UnrealII, SOFII, Wolfenstein RTCW, Duke Nukem Forever, Serious SamII...etc, etc. I say we can't have enough great FPS games. I'll play em all! I might like the "eye candy" or game play in one over the others, but....I like the idea of having so many choices on the horizon. I can hardly wait. I'm playing "Red Faction" right now..and loving it!

hes got a point... i mean you can sit there all day and compare games, like which one is better than the other or what parts are good or bad- they are video games, so thats what people do, they enjoy playing a game that strikes them- im gonna buy em all, and enjoy them all! sure, go ahead and miss out on FRIKIN UNREAL 2! doom3! because its not like counter-strike, or quake 2....? oh well-
personally, i think the only game that actually deserves to be trashed, cracked, and destributed, is the team that sold out to microshits box- destroying "hopes and dreams" of a FPS, that was supposed to come to the PC-
of course someones next post will be, no its still gonna be on the pc! ok, you just go live in your own little world there-

"On the Unreal Official site, they stated that its not even the pre-pre alpha, Lol. I wouldnt judge anything by that leaked version"

Well the "pre-pre alpha Lol" of Doom3 that has only been shown in grainy video looks way better than the "pre-pre alpha Lol" that I have played of Unreal 2. I will be getting both games though. I think Unreal 2 looks great, I just found your comment stupid.

Obviously some expensive suit and tie marketing parasite slagging off other games. I place a ten dollar shine that he never even played Doom or Quake or Unreal. This dude, I wouldn't buy a used car from. He probably had some statement to make after the pre-alpha code leaked. How about firing his ass for that? But that is the problem with these marketing parasites; you would need a flamethrower to get rid of his kind. And in the meantime Cavedog and Dynamix were shut. To support more PR parasites? Soon the whole games industry will sport these cancerous ulcers called marketing execs making silly statements. I thought we were beyond the days of Unreal Tourney is better than Quake 3 and vice versa. So much for human intelligence.

Forget about Q4 and DOOM III? I saw screens of the pre alpha code of Unreal II and I say the engine is in no cahooths with the new Doom engine. Plain and simple as that.

That said, forget about the marketing parasites statement, read what the Legend guy had to say. That sounds much more in perspective.

LOL. I love it when everyone's talking out their arses before a developer comes on speaking sense and shuts everyone up. U2 is looking sweet, definitely looking forward to getting my grubby little paws on that. i'm sure it wont make me "forget about Doom 3 and Quake 4" (which will be a very popular term used by PR guys over the next couple of years), but those are a different story altogether, like comparing an apple with an orange.

I think I speak for everyone at Legend when I say that we're all totally excited to see Doom 3 and Quake 4. I'll be out there picking up a copy first thing like everyone else.

I don't know where you get this idea that we're "always cutting down other games" because frankly I can't remember any time that anyone within Legend has done this.

Nobody here holds any animosity or ill will towards id in the least, in fact I pretty much owe my career to getting so heavily into the Doom and Quake series games.

I can't say how Unreal 2 will compare with games I've never seen more than grainy third gen videos of, but regardless I hardly think it matters. I know id can make one hell of a game, and as such I'll be happy to play it. Games are made to be entertaining, not as competition for other games. I hope everyone out there enjoys Unreal 2 and really has a great time voyaging through the adventure we're creating.

"especially w/ q4 returning q2 story line --"

HAHAHA - Quake never had any story to speak of - the single player game blew chunks, and quake3 was a huge dissapointment

Doom3 looks cool, but ID has proven to be losers when it comes to single-player.... they have made huge statements about "redefining single player" but haven't even come close

we will have to wait and see

Um buddy if you didn't know, The Unreal "alpha" version which got leaked wasnt even ALPHA, it was some TEST version for the E3 show. It was only made to show specific scenes at E3.

On the Unreal Official site, they stated that its not even the pre-pre alpha, Lol. I wouldnt judge anything by that leaked version

What we saw of Doom 3 from the video footage doesn't represent the final product of Doom 3, and it looks hellalot better. THe U2 E3 demo thing looks like it will expand the out door FPS...but it doesn't look like it will hold a candle to Doom 3s lighintg system.
