Out of the Blue

There's some unhappy news over at Stomped where Internet hard times have taken a further toll, as Aurora and Redwood will no longer be working there. For more than five years now Red and Stomped and I have been out here in the gaming news trenches together, going back to a time when Sean (Redwood) was this Dan Rather of Quake news (down to the occasional "what's the frequency Kenneth" wackiness) and Stomped was king of all Quake websites, and while word is Stomped isn't shutting down, this is obviously not good news for them. Good luck to Aurora and Stomped, I'm hoping things work out for them. Also, in particular, I want to (publicly) wish Sean all the best, he's quite a good guy, and in all the times we were here working in the same field I can't really recall a single moment of conflict with him. He helped set a lot of standards for integrity in this field in terms of crediting his news sources and always keeping the community aspects of what we do in focus, and in many of these ways served as a role model for me. These are shaping up to be tough times all over, not just the web, but I'm sure Sean will land on his feet, so in the long run, this is probably a greater loss for the gaming community than for Red, because now more than ever we need more people like him, not fewer.

Link of the Day: JescoPage. Thanks Mister Johnson.
Story of the Day: Late script saved Chan from New York attack (Guardian Unlimited). Thanks Jeremy D.

Both Blue and Red are valuable to the Quake (and FPS) community.

Yes, they are - I think that the gaming industry should start up a fund of some sort to support these web sites ASAP... (and find some way of doing it in a non-conflicting scheme)

Stomped was the site that introduced me to Quake, and by way of Quake every other game. I remember that I found it featured in some mainstream magazine.
Am I the only one who just realized that there was a difference between Redwoods' Quake News and Stomped?

BTW,
I'll miss Redwood also. I hope Blue doesn't follow the same route.

Is it just me, or did Redwood vs. Bluesnews offer a sort of Quake1 Threewave CTF approach to news coveage back in the ol' days...
Both Blue and Red are valuable to the Quake (and FPS) community.

I use the term "Quake" because that is around the time that I started reading both Blue and Red...

Ya,
you are right, and a sad deal it is...
Unfortunately, it looks like I'll be losing my job soon too due to the decrease in airplane travel...oh well, I figure I'll find something to keep my house at least...

BTW, Thanks be to God that I have no debt except for the house....

Good luck to all aerospace/aviation people affected by the layoffs...see ya in 5 years or so...

I remember when redwood had his own page, back in the old days. He's an aggie (Texas A&M) And, while we shouldn't hold that against him, they hosted his site for a while. I remember when |2| redid his logo and gave him the "Redwood in space" deal, infact I think I remember there being another guy with him. Ah well, "good old days" right? Best of luck to ya, big guy.

It probably would be, but considering that Blue's recently lost Looni it probably isn't much of a possibility.

With all the people leaving Stomped I guess it's time to make Blues my gaming page of choice from now on. Blues News has always been great but Stomped is a lot easier to read. It's the best looking site out there.

I'll never forget when a freind told me to go to www.stomped.com/redwood. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a gaming news wbsite! All these years later, I still daily visit what I consider "Redwood's" page. Good luck Red.

Back in '95-'96 when Stomped was still a young whipper snapper (before Quake was even released) I was hanging out in efnet (or undernet, I don't remember) #quake. One of the guys running Stomped came into the channel all frantic because one of the guys working on the site had wiped out the front page and they had no backup. Me being the gracious guy I am dug around in my browser cache on disk and pulled up a copy, DCC'd it to him, and all was well.

Not really a big deal, but it's still my favorite Stomped story.

Don't know, number 1. With Redwood gone, they will only have a few "charitable" workers posting news. I don't know if they have more than 1 paid employee anymore. I would bet that their news coverage becomes sketchy at first, then somewhat non-existent.

Losing Redwood is losing their NEWS.
