Romero Games Xs the news that the company's next game, thought to be a first-person shooter, has lost its funding. It's not stated that this is part of Black Wednesday at Microsoft, but it sure sounds like it, saying "our publisher has canceled funding for our game along with several other unannounced projects at other studios." Brenda Romero says the matter was entirely outside Romero Games' control, and does not reflect on the quality of its work. The company is now evaluating its options going forward, which sound like they include layoffs, and an unconfirmed report on Videogamer says the entire staff was let go as a result. Here's the statement:
We have some difficult news to share. Last night, we learned that our publisher has canceled funding for our game along with several other unannounced projects at other studios. This was a strategic decision made at a high level within the publisher, well above our visibility or control. We deeply wish there had been something, anything, we could have done to prevent this outcome.
This absolutely isn't a reflection of our team's work, performance, or the quality of the project itself. We hit every milestone on time, every time, consistently received high praise, and easily passed all our internal gates. We are incredibly proud of the work being done, and of the talented team behind it. The best we've worked with.
We're currently evaluating next steps and working quickly to support our team. Many of us have worked together for more than a decade, some for over 20 years. It's an extremely difficult day, and we're heartbroken that it's come to this. If you know of any opportunities or ways you can help our incredible team, please reach out. Thank you to everyone who's offered support and kindness and encouragement during this difficult time.

Romero is a diddler
That's... quite the accusation.

- the "making him their bitch" comment was funny even if predictable.

What has the guy done in 20 years? I feel like this isn't much of a loss.. he was a visionary 35 years ago but seems to be outdated in the last 20 years.
Area 51, Ravenwood Fair, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Commander, Pettington Park, Dangerous Dave in the Deserted Pirate's Hideout, Grom Skate, Warpcop III, July 4, 1976, Gunman Taco Truck, SIGIL, Empire of Sin, SIGIL II.
He's been at various levels of involvement in the list above but the dude stays busy. Like anyone in entertainment, he's expected to have a mix of hits and misses.
The obligatory John Romero trash talk is getting old and he definitely deserves more credit than he usually gets. Check out his autobiography -- it's a great read and gives some excellent insight into who he really is. There's even a chapter that describes the gameplay for his crowdfunded game 'Blackroom' that was cancelled. The idea definitely sounded visionary (in a good way -- new gameplay concepts) but I think there were some issues with finding a publisher (or maybe another funding related issue?).

Turns out it was Romero being made the bitch this time.

They just released the second DLC a month or two ago because they contractually had to even though the game is probably a financial failure.
