Ready or Not Changes

A post on Steam outlines a bunch of changes coming to Ready or Not on PC based on the upcoming console ports of the no-knock tactical first-person shooter (thanks Eurogamer.net). Though the console editions will carry mature ratings, there are still some aspects that will be toned down. When this just involves swapping textures then the PC edition will remain unaffected. but there are some situations that will require also updating the PC edition to facilitate crossplay. Here's a bit:

There are 2 main reasons that these limited asset changes may be visible on the PC version as well:
1) Maintaining multiple versions of the game with different assets and system mechanics increases the likelihood of bugs to occur in future updates, and subsequent challenges keeping the game updated across multiple versions. Think lighting or optimization issues, for example (or any number of unexpected bugs from maintaining different versions).
2) If the in-game assets were not the same it would make crossplay unusable; the game content must be equal or basically equal for multiplayer to work. Different versions of assets affects multiplayer replication, which is the ability for the server to understand what’s happening in-game and host players in the same lobby/server.

so what's the whole backstory here? i've seen some stuff on reddit about it but I still don't understand the main gripe.

Read this Steam news announcement which still has exactly '0' upvotes but 1,435 comments.

Gerards ghillie just goes down a little further, the women on Port gain tattered cloths instead of being nude, small changes like that.

AND THAT'S WHAT RUINS IT ALL!!!!!! These SMALL things are what made RoN different from all the other games. Trafficked women on Port being naked is GROSS and is DISTURBING and it's EXACLY WHAT MAKES RON FEEL SO DIFFERENT, SO FRESH AND SO REAL COMPARED TO ALL THE OTHER GAMES! Human traffickers are terrible, drug dealers and pedophiles are terrible, they're all UGLY AND GROSS, and the fact that RoN WASN'T afraid to SHOW THEM AS THEY ARE without almost ANY edges being cut is what makes the game special.

And now it's gone. Because of corpos. FOR ME AS WELL WHO DOESN'T EVEN OWN A CONSOLE THE PORT IS BEING MADE FOR. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing! Can't express just how much i hate it.

^ In essence, the devs censored their game so they could get a better age rating on conslows for better sales. They refuse to keep this censorship exclusive to the conslow versions because they consider it too much effort to work on two versions of the game. That's why everyone has to suffer for better conslow sales now.

Personally glad I did not buy this game yet. It will be an even bigger discount than previously planned before I take the plunge (if ever).

Ok so they made the game with nudity, children violence and corpse dismemberment and they are changing it to be more "PG 13" type so they can sell more on the consoles.

Part of me is like "ok that's good". The other part of me is they should leave be. Since I haven't played or even looked at the game play, is there a bunch of weird evil people multilating corpses and killing children for fun online with this shit? If so it's a good change. If not and it's indeed that they are showing the real horrors of evil people it's probably best to leave it.

Seems like a fairly minor change. Unless you're a necrophile I guess, which maybe I guess some people here are, and maybe that's the audience that the game cultivated?
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

I had no idea this was a thing with the game. I thought the whole gimmick was that it tries to represent a more accurate SWAT team experience for players who like Siege's game play but wanted more realism. Apparently it also gathered a dedicated following for other reasons and the developers/publisher miscalculated because of....wait you'll never guess why: greed.

Insert obligatory, "consoles suck" comment here.

Yeah, pretty much. I regret picking this one up. Seems like an ok game but not worth what I paid for it at the time. If I remember right I uninstalled it because the updates would take forever.

Seemed to me like it was a good differentiation strategy to avoid the PG-13 sameness of competitor titles. Thus the passionate fan base and backlash.
RIP RedEye9. We miss you.

As it should. The argument that its to violent and dismemberment is so pathetic in a game that all about killing other's.

Soldiers of Fortune had it, and it was on consoles. Them complaining about this on a game that was very much on console is laughable.
