Out of the Blue

Today is the 29th anniversary of the launch of Quake! At this point it should go without saying that these anniversary announcements are preceded by an implicit "it's hard to believe this, but." This site originated in late 1995 in anticipation of Quake as an outgrowth of my DOOM fandom, and it's easy for me to recall the anticipation leading up to this day in 1996, and all the excitement that ensued as we got our hands on the game. I'm still grappling with how this ended the era of one-on-one deathmatch we'd grown used to in DOOM and its IPX networking, but I imagine I'll get over it in another decade or two.

I don't suppose any of you remember KALI. That was my multiplayer jam back then.

I used Dwango a bit but I think HEAT.NET was where it was at. Still got a HEAT pin someone gave me at a LAN party.

Happy birthday Quake, as a long time commenter, I first encountered Blue's Quake Rag in the library at school (they had one with crap connection) before I had an internet connection at home. Admittedly , I was a more avid reader of PlanetQuake at that time, spending overdue time at the one computer downloading things like KQP , copying it over to a floppy, only to find I had a corrupted zip and going back over the weekend to look for another opportunity. Those were the days.

Haha, NY DWANGO. Brings back memories. Good times.

Big Dr. Demento fan back in the day as well. I'd record his radio shows on cassette and relisten to them over and over in the car on my drives to and from work.

I grew up on the Christmas album... those were probably our most played christmas songs when we were kids.

I remember working in the corporate hangar at FedEx when Fred Smith came over to talk to me. To this day he is the only nice, down-to-earth millionaire I have ever met. FedEx Memphis had two corporate jets; tail numbers ending in 01 and 02. I saw the 02 jet taxi in and didn't think that he would be on it since I figured the head of a global corporation would be on 01. But there he was, and he talked to me like just a regular, decent guy. He was the reason working at FedEx was hands-down the best job I ever had by a huge margin. The aircraft mechanics, the electricians, and HVAC were better paid than anywhere else in the midsouth.

I have memories of TRYING and mostly failing to use some service (DWANGO?) to setup Nuke Dukem multiplayer games with more than two people. The game, like most back in the day, was originally only capable of LAN play. The service fooled the game into seeing an Internet connection as a LAN.

The only way it would work is if you found two other people with almost the exact same ping. It was very hit or miss. When it worked, it was wonderful.

In the pinball article there is a photo which shows the Captain Fantastic pinball machine. I remember playing that.
A day without video games is like... just kidding, I have no idea.

There's nothing stopping you from creating one in your kitchen sink right now. And given that baking soda and vinegar are an actual clog remedy, you could even pass it off as actual work instead of just messing around.
I'm thinking of that scene in Close Encounters when Roy rips up his yard to build a giant model volcano in his house. That's the energy I'm feeling—nothing less will do! Except I don't want my neighbors to think I've lost my mind. 🤪 😅

I've always lamented not having had the opportunity to make a baking soda volcano in elementary school. I used to think they were the absolute coolest thing a student could create. How often is a teacher totally fine with you making something that could explode in class?
