Out of the Blue

If you were hoping today would be Friday the 13th, you're in luck! If you weren't, well, watch out, I guess. The occasion reminds me of my beloved black cat Alex. I've commented about this before, but if you are looking to adopt a cat, you could do far worse than seeking out a Bombay, though they are somewhat rare. He was the nicest cat you could ever meet, and meet him you would if you visited me, because typical of the breed, he was extremely sociable. But for MrsBlue's allergies, given the chance I'd adopt another Bombay in a heartbeat.

Duet was one of the best episodes of DS9s entire run. Nana Visitor and Harris Yulin were amazing.
A first season episode, in a first season that was all over the place.
The first time I saw it, I remember weeping when Aamin broke down from PTSD over the occupation. Even as just a filing clerk on the other side, the weight of it all shattered him. That episode was when Deep Space Nine truly hit me—and made me take the show seriously. It also helped me understand what the writers were aiming for. Toward the end, the series leaned more heavily into serialized storytelling, but it still retained its episodic roots whenever possible.

My heartfelt condolences to you for both.

Thank you. But, as you said, life is not fair. Best thing a person can do is give it the finger, get back up, and push forward.

Condolences, that's terrible.

Sadly, I agree about life's fairness, as I do with everyone's sentiments about cancer. It's taken so much from so many of us.

Agreed! Here at Barad-Dur we have an 8 month old Russian Blue kitten who is so smart we could probably teach her to read and write, and who gets into everything, including everywhere she is not allowed to be. But if we didn't have her, other options would be Bombay, Abyssinian, and Burmese.

Or a friendly moggie from the local pound (my last cat was one of the latter, big black tomcat with a heart of gold).

Just watched it the other night to refresh my memory, and drink a toast to great performances from both Harris Yulin and Nana Visitor. One of the best episodes of the first season, and the entire series.

Rest in Peace Harris.

You have my empathy, amigo. Fuck cancer. It seems to touch us all in some way. I survived childhood cancer, my late wife survived cervical cancer, and our adopted daughter died of pancreatic cancer.

I believe environmental factors have a lot to do with it. We live in a much more polluted world than our ancestors. It's not the only reason, of course, but I think it's a bigger factor than we as a species currently realize.

Thanks everyone.

Incredibly unfair. Fuck cancer.
My condolences on the loss of your brother.

I had never heard of this type of cancer until 2020, and even then, only as a part of my schooling. When I thought about it, there is no reason one part of the body is immune to cancer; I just hadn't thought of it before.

As I started reading the article my first thought was "micro plastics" -- which they did mention. But apparently they just don't know at this point. I don't they even really know what function, if any, the appendix fulfills. There are some theories, but no definitive conclusions.

PBS and NPR are great sources of unbiased information (yes I hear those of you who are snickering, but I assure you that you are the ones deluded) which is exactly why they need to exist without any government handouts whatsoever. I'll up my pledge to keep them around if necessary; hopefully enough people do as well.

That is a pretty good episode. As for the idea put forth in the article that "... some fans perceive its earliest seasons.... as a slog to get through before you hit the real good stuff." I would say that is only true for anyone who 1) Had unrealistic expectations and 2) Never watched the show after having completed the entire series. Much like Babylon 5 which used a similar story telling structure, it is far better the second time around.
